Sao Paulo - Bar Fama (show and hustler bar)

In a recent post I mentioned my preference for Sao Paulo over Rio.

A friend e-mailed me a while ago about an upcoming trip he has planned to Sao Paulo and his intent to visit, among other places, a hustler bar I recommended and have visited many times. The hustler bar is called Bar Fama which is located in Centro - Sao Paulo.

There are two negative things about Bar Fama that I think deserve mention. Number one is it opens only late at night. The doors open around 11:30 at night but the place does not get busy until after midnight.

The second thing is the drag shows. The drag queens sing and talk very loud. They put their microphone almost inside their mouth and then howl while singing and/or talking. This makes it difficult to carry a conversation with the garotos (hustlers) and friends. People tolerate or get used to the loud noise (shows). Many people actually say that they like the shows, even though I doubt people go to the bar solely for the shows. Clearly, the hustlers are what really draws the people. There are also gogo dancers, many of whom are available as hustlers when they are not dancing.

During the week, Bar Fama has a fair turn out of hustlers, but Friday and Saturday are the busiest.

The hustlers available at Bar Fama are some of the same guys that you will find at the saunas earlier in the evening. However, there are some (perhaps half) of the hustlers who do not go to the saunas and have never been. These non sauna guys are usually more mellow and less pushy to set up a meeting.

I don't recall ever seeing steroid type hustlers at Bar Fama.

Although I was told that there are rooms available at Bar Fama, I have never used them. In fact, I was never curious enough to see them. There are many hourly hotels within walking distance of Bar Fama.

I assume an hourly hotel would be more comfortable to “visit” with a hustler because the hourly hotels do not have the loud screaming drag queen “music” playing as loud as possible.

There is an important feature at Bar Fama that should be mentioned here: There is an area in the back where hustlers lean on and pull out their dicks for anyone interested in oral sex, with a fee of course. Is an area that you have to walk around looking for it, you don't see it if you are having a drink at the bar or watching a show, but is not a regular back room where anyone interested in sex hang out, is for hustlers and their clients. As far as I know there are no rooms for rent, the only sex activity are blow jobs provided by hustlers. I was at the Fama 3 times, one was pretty much dead and it was way after midnight, the other 2 were busy, there is a curtain at the entrance and you can take a peek before you pay the admission. The working boys are quite interesting, both times I got in there were 10-15 boys, a couple you see at saunas and several that you do not, the types that stop by to get some change for the weekend and do not do prostitution regularly. The fees are in the R$30/R$50,00 range, $7 to $12 dollars, depending how attractive they are. The bar was closed for several months a while ago for allowing minors inside but since re-opened does not seem to have any additional problems. Customers have to use some discretion on who they choose, the bar is located in the Arouche neighborhood, sort of gay bas-fond of Sao Paulo, some street walkers do stop by and should be avoided unless you are into the real wild side. Very convenient for foreigners since the only conversation between hustlers and customers is regarding the fees, after agreed upon, just get on your knees.

It is currently about half-past midnight in Sao Paulo, November 20, 2015. Today is a holiday in Sao Paulo (Friday).

I will be meeting a couple of friends at Bar Fama in a while. Last weekend, Bar Fama was just "okay" but I was just told to come to the bar because the holiday has caused a lot of people (clients and garotos) to visit the bar tonight (Thursday after midnight) (Friday morning). Supposedly, the bar is filled with garotos and clients and loud singing drag queens and dancing go-go boys.

If anyone is interested in visiting Bar Fama at some time in the future, like I wrote previously, the bar opens late.

When you visit the bar at night, you don't see much of the architecture in the area because most places are closed. If you see the building during the day, you would never know that fun things happen there in the night.

Here is a daytime Google image of the building just in case you care and/or plan to visit the place. The day photo will help you realize where the bar is in relation to other buildings in the area.

I went to Bar Fama on a Saturday night a couple weekends ago for the first time based on this recommendation.  I arrived around midnight and the place was virtually empty with 3 customers, including me.  There were about 7-8 working guys outside the bar, most of them in the 18-25 age range, and they rotated in and out of the bar over the time that I was there.  They were all fairly friendly, some stopping over to say hello, yet not overly aggressive.  If you wanted a guy, the only place inside to go was the restrooms (they can be locked/private), or you could go to a nearby hotel by the hour.  I could not find the area where an earlier poster mentioned that there was a railing with guys hanging over it getting blowjobs.

While virtually empty, I was quite happy having met this 21 year old ripped guy who took out his 10 inch dick in the bathroom and then things progressed from there.  A R$30 tip ($10 USD) to him was well worth it.  Inspired me to meet another guy there, which I was happy to meet up with, but not quite as good as the first.

It's a different scene yet can be very rewarding. Close to Republica area if you want to head over there after this bar.  A couple photos of the inside of the bar.

If you click in the link to google pictures shared in an rapier post, you can see it is now closed. Unfortunately, it seems it was a great place,

Too bad. I think it is the only stripper club in São Paulo.

It still is a great place.   It is not out of business.  

When you click on Google for any location, if the place is a business and it happens to be closed at the time you look at the site, Google will say the place is closed.  This does not mean that the placed is closed permanently.  

So, Bar Fama is alive and well, even though it has late hours and can be hit or miss when you go there.

Awesome news. I was disappointed to hear it had closed, as I had started planning a visit immediately after hearing about it. LOL. Glad to hear the reports of its death have been greatly exaggerated.

Fechado agora (above) merely means "closed now"  (not permanently)  - the place is still in business - 

As  you can see from the above "cut and paste" that I provided above, the hours are from 20h00 - 05h00 (translation, eight o'clock at night until five o'clock in the morning).   

The entrance fee is R$10 ( equivalent to about three U.S. dollars and change).

Even though the business says it opens at eight o'clock, don''t waste your time going there until close to midnight or later.   If you go there early, sometimes, but not often, you will find some hustlers hanging around the place looking for early pickings.

Just to clarify....it is R$10 entrance AND R$20 mandatory minimum drink consumption.  So the total is R$30, still not bad.

"mandatory"  where does the mandatory come from?

On nights I went to Bar Fama with friends, and if the place was too empty for us to stay, we left after five or ten minutes and paid only the entrance fee of R$10. 

We were informed that if the place was busy with customers and garotos, and if we stayed in the facility to partially watch a show or "cruise" for more than ten minutes, we would be charged R$20 reais consumption charge on top of the R$10 reais entrance fee.  

In reality, it is not necessary to enter the facility to see if it is too dead to be interesting.  Just pull back the curtain near the entrance and look inside.  If it is dead, you leave.  Disappointing,  but quite a simple maneuver.
