Long time favorite hotel of many posters, the Atlantico Copacabana is now seeing a decline in room rates. The hotel was a favorite due to its location and its liberal guest policy. The rooms were outdated, but clean.

I just got the following update that standard rooms are once again going for under $100 per nite.

100 USD is a great deal. I still think a shitty hotel. But, I judge mainly based on Internet and when I was there, it sucked.

Has it improved over the years?

How are the other hotels in the area doing? All going down as well?

Is this place still used by many posters to the forums?

I stayed there more than ten years ago and it was only tolerable because of the liberal visitor policy.

In the interim, all one needs do is read the reviews of this hotel on Tripadvisor.

According to most reviews, the place is nasty and is in terrible disrepair. Some guests reported that their belongings were stolen by employees of the hotel.

Hotel Vermont in Ipanema was $40/night or so in 2007 I think.

How come you can get a cheaper room in Tokyo than in Rio?

I visited Rio two weeks ago. I stayed in the Ipanema Plaza Hotel (Golden Tulip Ipanema Plaza). It was ok, although I personally think it is too expensive for what you get. But if you want to have guests, you should know that they charge 100 Reais for every visitor. I booked a double room, but that didn´t help. I booked a guy, when he arrived, he had to show ID, I had to come down and they escorted me and the guy to my room. I had the impression that they don´t want to have a guest, so they make it really embarrassing for you. Sorry for the mistakes, my English is not so good, but I thought it might be interesting for other people here.

This past weekend I stayed at the Ibis Copacabana for about $65 a night. Newer hotel, very clean and I did not have any problems bringing guests back to my room.

Good to know!! the Atlantico is a dump, I was talking to a guy who was on the desk there for 16 years and he said it's been over 20 years since they changed the Pillows or mattresses!! UGH!

Thanks Meteor9876 for this warning. In fact, it represents a liberalisation in policy by the hotel!

I stayed at the Ipanema Plaza Hotel (Golden Tulip Ipanema Plaza) about 6 years ago. The modernised rooms on the upper floors were extremely nice and the house-keeping service by a young man was very good. At that time, the hotel permitted no visitors to rooms whatsoever. This ban applied equally to male and female visitors. I noticed that the security staff intervened if a guest tried to take a local from the beach into the lobby and lifts.

I had planned ahead and brought with me on holiday a young blond Argentine muscleboy-bottom so I wasn't bothered by the policy, tho I witnessed a presumably heterosexual man protesting volubly at his younger female friend being excluded.

The Copacabana Atlantico Hotel was my place of stay "back-in-the-day," from 2002 til 2008. It had a "liberal" guest policy and wonderful help at the desk and in the breakfast dining area. ...loved its roof top as well! Apparently, both have changed since then, and I no longer have any desire to stay there.

In 2011 I was in an apartment, and for me now, that's the way to go while in Rio de janeiro. My company no longer exists, but whenever I do manage to return, I'm using http://www.airbnb.comor another source for my lodging!

And in response to mvan1's query as to those who post here staying at the said hotel, no one in the past three years, perhaps a few more, have mentioned this hotel! It's all been apartmental recommendations!

Good topic, I stayed at Atlantico 5 times between 2003 and 2008. OK each time mostly due to location and rooftop pool. It was getting pricey for what it is. I stayed at Ipanema Plaza once and thought it overpriced as well.. Only hotel I ever stayed in that called me to tell me "my boy" was in lobby. My visa has since expired and I am not sure I want to return until after Olympics. Even with great x-rates and airfares.

If I do return, Porto Allegre would be first choice. Very little crime and while there is no beach, Mezzanino and other clubs made up for it. Spent three months there in 2009 for work and had great time.

Never hear anything about Florianopolis but guides say there is one thermas there.

I have been to Barcelona recently and there are many Brazilians there. So that will be a default this year if I feel the need.

Lucky you tealady! Besides Mezzanino, there is Bar Mix (Mixx?) that was a lot of fun with normal bar downstairs and cabines upstairs. There is another sauna thermas there I did not get to. Reviews were not great. There is an afternoon river cruise that leaves from where the old power plant is. Another short day trip is a cute German village(s) about 1 1/2 hours north with a resort and lake with paddleboats in the "pines".

TomCal has written lots about Porto Allegre; I even think he wrote about some of its cultural attractions, although limited, a while back. Do a search in the archives here. Do a bing or google check as well!

See if http://www.viator.comhas anything. I know there are good sources there for Rio and Sao Paulo; I used its services when I went to Berlin and to Barcelona. My cousin used for Italy.

Recently spent 10 days in Brazil, about 5 days in Rio. Stayed at Caesar Park and JW Marriott, neither allowed guests under any circumstance and security was constantly on the eye.

None the less we discovered love hotels, best one is panda hotel. Google search to read more.

We booked a room at atlantico our last night as our love nest as they allow guests. Booked a deluxe room for $80. I went to see room....wow....threadbare curtains, toilet was all mildewed, and bed like a rock. Left and did not go back. Hotel is really run down.

There is a another Hotel called "Atlantico Rio" from the same franchise... It opened in 2013, I think, and was nice with everything new. It really helps that it is just in front of the Cantagalo Metro station (1 stop away both from Ipanema or Point 202) and very safe to arrive at night from the metro. Its three blocks from the beach, but there are plenty of bars or restaurants near. When I was there two years ago, they had the same police on visitors of not minding with you where up with them.

Also, the Atlantico Praia hotel on Av. Atlantica is under renovation, I have never stayed there, but the rooms look nice now too and with a great rate. Unfortunately all guests complain about construction noises on their reviews on booking.com.

When in Rio I usually stay at one of the Ibis or Mercure/Adagio (botafogo, copacabana or centro). Rio hotels prices are just unaffordable for me lately hehe

Do you mean the Marriott on Avenida Atlantica in Copacabana?

Whenever I go to Rio, I stay at the above Marriott.

Over the years, I have stayed there countless times. I never had a visitor refused access to my room.

Sometimes I or the visitor got questioned by a security person near the elevators but after a brief explanation, there was never a refusal for the visitor to come to the room.

I am usually with the visitor when we enter. Often we go to the elevators from the hotel restaurant rather than walking directly to the elevators.

I also have "elite" status at Marriott which shows on a card issued by Marriott. I used that card a few times with security people near the elevators.

The above factors might account for why I have not been refused having visitors at Marriott.

Back in 2003 and 2004 I used to stay at the Atlantico. I stayed there because of their liberal visitor policy. However, I would never stay there again.
