AdamSmith Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Too interesting, and relevant to today's SCOTUS cases, to bury in the Politics forum. How marriage has changed over centuries http://theweek.com/articles/475141/how-marriage-changed-over-centuries Quote
Members RA1 Posted April 28, 2015 Members Posted April 28, 2015 Interesting but can SCOTUS actually rule over changes in customs, etc.? Aren't they supposed to rule on Constitutional issues alone, not political or even societal issues? I certainly realize they do not always but is that not the goal and stated purpose? AdamSmith Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 Some of the Justices today asked, is it right for us to change a definition that has been fixed for millennia? The point of citing this article is the point many historians make about that argument: that definitions and practices of marriage have not remained fixed, but have varied enormously over time. Quote
Members RA1 Posted April 28, 2015 Members Posted April 28, 2015 I would prefer that the justices be at least as well informed as we here on this site are. Best regards, RA1 Quote
AdamSmith Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 I'm sure they sneak glances at this forum on their phones under their robes during oral. MsGuy 1 Quote
Members RA1 Posted April 28, 2015 Members Posted April 28, 2015 I always sneak glances et cetera during oral. I am sure the justices are likewise inclined. Best regards, RA1 AdamSmith and MsGuy 2 Quote
