I had a conversation with a guy who travels to Santo Domingo at least 3-4 times a year for the boys...I dud that in my early 20's and quickly got over DR by my late 20s and celebrated my 31st there and decided to give it a LONG break.... DR has some very attractive guys who are well built and very attractive...My problem is that I find DR as a whole TOO third world.... I love the guys and the availability and variety but HAD the overall experience and prefer Rio as a whole... What do you guys think? flipao 1 Quote

DR has some very attractive guys who are well built and very attractive...My problem is that I find DR as a whole TOO third world.... I love the guys and the availability and variety but HAD the overall experience and prefer Rio as a whole... What do you guys think? I visited Santo Domingo only once a couple of years ago. Although I liked my time spent there, I have no plans to return. There are lots of hustlers in the city. I was lucky to avoid any crooked ones or scam artists. All were clean, polite, performed as agreed and asked for little money in exchange for their services. Prior to going to Santo Domingo, I had heard warnings of scams in certain areas of the Colonial Zone where tourists are supposedly targeted for scams. Consequently, for the most part, I avoided that area except to see it as a tourist. There is a small, family-owned hotel in Santo Domingo. Many guests are tourists who bring back "visitors" (hustlers or female prostitutes) to a room. The hotel staff and owner appear non judgmental about guests bringing visitors to rooms. The hotel I chose is one of a few decent hotels in Santo Domingo that allows a hotel guest to bring back a visitor. There is a five or six dollar charge for bringing back a visitor to a guest room. The charge includes the front desk registering the visitor and retaining the visitor’s identification, which is returned to the visitor after the hotel guest confirms that everything is in order (you were not robbed, killed etc). The name of the hotel is Hotel Duque De Wellington. If you read Trip Advisor reviews about the above-named hotel, don't be put off by some of the guests complaining about the hustlers and hookers in the lobby or in the area of the hotel. I found the experience entertaining. Yes, the conservative site TripAdvisor.com reports on gay venues. Hustlers can be engaged in bars in Santo Domingo or along the streets near the hotel and/or in other areas in the city. There are many hustlers that hang around the area of the above-mentioned hotel and they are, by and large, friendly and good looking but are lacking in charm. Knowing Spanish is a plus (my Spanish is terrible). However, some of the hustlers know a bit of English. If you know Italian or Portuguese (I am okay with Portuguese), there is enough similarity in the languages for you to communicate (at a basic level) with the Spanish-speaking hustlers in Santo Domingo. Using a smart phone to translate would not be a good idea while trying to negotiate with a guy in the open areas of Santo Domingo. As to Rio being a rich mans’ Dominican Republic, I must disagree. Those two places are nothing alike. The most obvious difference between Brazilian garotos and the Santo Domingo hustlers was the lack of “charm” that is found with the Brazilian garotos but not with the Dominicans. While it is true that the guys in the Dominican Republic were friendly, they lacked the special charm that the Brazilian garotos have. The old musical (My Fair Lady) contains a song that has words that fit the Brazilian garotos but not the guys from the Dominican Republic. The words are “oozing with charm from every pore” definitely applies to Brazilian garotos. If anyone has a desire to check out Dominican Republic, I heartily recommend it as a place to visit. As a place for continuing and/or repeat visits, that possibility must rest with each person after the first visit. Some will like it while others will not. flipao, AdamSmith and lookin 3 Quote

I appreciate your response and experience....Again, "charm" is relative to what you are looking for.... In both DR and Rio, I understand the game and don't fall for the boyfriend of the week scam...I don't fall period...I enjoy the time and when it's over, I send them on their way... In DR, on one of my last nights in town, with my boyfriend of the week knowing it, he was prospecting at an even that we went to together.....No problem...I understand he needed his next "boyfriend" and I would be flying out the next morning In Rio, I have seen guys that I keep in contact with and can never wait for me to be back in town because they "miss me!" The biggest different for me was the culture and subtle-ness that Brazilians offer....In both countries, it is acceptable to be a male escort for guys who have girlfriends and wives because it is all about the money, DR just seems lower budget "TO ME" both with the guys that visit from the states and Europe and the escorts there.... flipao and Axiom2020 2 Quote

Members mvan1 Posted April 28, 2015 Members Posted April 28, 2015 snip snip ....In both countries, it is acceptable to be a male escort for guys who have girlfriends and wives because it is all about the money, DR just seems lower budget "TO ME" both with the guys that visit from the states and Europe and the escorts there.... How did you arrive at your conclusion about "guys that visit from the states?" When I was there, I was interested in the local scene and culture. The chief difference I noticed (comparing the guys in Santo Domingo versus guys in Brazil) was the lack of "charm" of the Dominican hustlers, as I already reported above. I did not pay much attention to other tourist visitors to Santo Domingo. I was there to do my own thing. I heard occasional complaints from Americans alleging that hustlers were asking too much. I also heard similar complaints from Americans who visit Brazil. Same tune, different orchestra! I am puzzled how you concluded that visitors to Santo Domingo from the states are a "lower budget" than those visitors to Brazil. Just curious. lookin 1 Quote
Members axiom2001 Posted April 28, 2015 Members Posted April 28, 2015 Check the Monaga blog dedicated to DR: http://www.monaga.net/index.php/en/blog Flipao, prior to my reading your suggestion, I immediately thought about Anthony Montgomery and his wonderful web.blogspot and all of the salient information and photos which are there. I was in Santo Domingo for a week in 2005, and for the most part enjoyed my experience except for the accident which I incurred [...fell into one of those curb-side openings and tore a ligament in my knee and was impaired and out of commission for the rest of my stay!]. My injury led to surgery back home and an ugly scar from knee downward. In terms of the men, I still prefer the Brasilians but plan to return to the DR to re-experience and truly and really enjoy what I lost out on in 2005. The club scene has changed dramatically since my first visit. Get your updates via Anthony, an ex-pat who's lived there for a few years now, and since I've been reading his blog from time to time, many changes have transpired in terms of the gay/escort scene as well as the ever-changing clubs. There's an X cinema there; ...have yet to go! lookin and flipao 2 Quote

I have several friends that travel there on the regular that are too cheap to travel to Brazil or other countries...One in particular complains about the hotel quality and the lack of things to do but also says that the ticket to Rio is too expensive.... I started going to DR in my early 20's and after going for almost 10 years, there has been very little growth as a whole in the country....I am basing my response on what I have seen and experienced...You can do your own research if you want... In my opinion, it is a little too Third World, I have therefor decided to give it a break for a while after celebrating my last birthday there... The End Quote
