Guest lester1 Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 I posted this question on another board but didnt get much help, the thread being sidetracked into what time there is a kids curfew and something about illegal game downloads, neither of which interest me, or indeed have anything really to do with the new law. I simply wanted to know how seriously the internet cafe owners were taking the new law, and in examining ID details, logging them in and out, and storing lists of sites visited. We all know there is a great range of internet outlets in Pattaya from high end ones in BigC and Royal garden to the backstreet ones with Thai keyboards. Its been 2 to 3 weeks since the law came into force and thus about the time (as far as Thailand goes) when its possible to guage whether the law will fade into disuse or not. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 From what I have heard, some shops are complying with the law and some are acting as if they've never heard of it. You'll very likely find some shops that aren't bothering with it if you look around. I'm guessing you do not intend to bring a laptop with you. If you have one and bring it with you, and you also stay in a hotel at which you can get Internet access, then you don't have to worry about ID and checks. Many hotels now have wifi available, so you could check that before deciding where you will stay. If all else fails, and you can't find a shop that meets your needs, you're welcome to come over to my place and use my computer or plug your own laptop into my line, although I'm probably a bit far from wherever you plan to stay. Guest Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 My Internet was down yesterday and I was forced to go into 2 different Internet shops to check e-mail. Neither asked for any ID or information. Neither were different than when I went years ago. I did take a laptop with me and plugged into their system. On another note, a great place to use if convenient or you is Starbucks. Their Internet is fast and fun to sit and drink a cup of coffee. You need your own computer but you can buy a card that gives you I think 20 hours of access time. It is not cheap but it does last a long time. Quote
Guest slackersam Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Won't the Internet cafes all simply install Chrome, since that can be set to block all Internet tracking? Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Won't the Internet cafes all simply install Chrome, since that can be set to block all Internet tracking? I'm not sure that would work any better than using proxy servers at an Internet cafe if they use keylogger programs. If some entity wants to examine what web sites you visited and what you did on that web site, a keylogger program would still tell all. Unfortunately, as the world seems to become more and more paranoid, there is always some jerk who manages to get into a position of authority, and then comes up with yet another way to erode individual privacy. Here we are in the 21st century, and there are still people who want to decide for you what you can read, what you can look at, what your religion should be, who you can marry, how to have sex, etc. Now they want to control your use of the Internet in order to protect . . . . . well, what exactly are they protecting? Hey! That guy looked at a web site we don't want him to look at. Jail him! Quote
Guest slackersam Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 You could always install a keylogger blocker program as soon as you sign on. Quote
