Brasil New Year trip dilemmas 2014, working on plan B

I have seven days leave from work after Christmas, i can extend it by another seven days if i want to but i have to use seven days. So my thoughts turned to Brasil once again. Trouble is, Rio is very expensive if you want to be by Copacabana or Ipanema beaches in an apartment or hotel at new year.

I am waiting on a price for the apartment i last stayed at in Rio, but if that is also prohibitive, my plan B will have to kick in. (Ten days looks like costing US$3500+ for ten nights). Having said that, I can't imagine going back to Rio at new years ever again so a small part of me is saying "don't mind the cost for just this one time".

So i considered having seven days in places like Sao Paulo or Porto Alegre then making my way to Rio in the new year. However Porto Alegre taught me that I need to be able to laze on a beach if i am going to be doing nothing during the day. Don't get me wrong, I dont mind the odd musuem but i cannot spend more than a couple of hours in a museum and certainly not three plus days running.

Given that i now have a basic requirement of a decent beach during the day with reasonable access to a sauna with boys in the evening, i started to look at other places in Brasil.

From what i can gleam from the forum posts, there are nice beaches in other areas of Brasil but not too many with good access to Saunas. Some places like Florianopolis are almost as expensive as Rio. One place that stood out was Fortaleza, as far as i can make out it has good beaches, good nightlife including saunas and the apartment rental prices seem very cheap.

So plan B is a tentative trip from England to Fortaleza via Lisbon which breaks the flight times nicely. One week in Fortaleza being lazy on a beach. Possibly fly to Porto Alegre for a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, followed by Monday to Friday in Rio coming home Saturday. (There probably should be more punctuation in that sentence)

Any thoughts anyone?

My vote would be for Recife and/or Fortaleza in Northeast Brazil, great beaches! and saunas! There is a Brazilian friend of mine that goes twice a year for month each time to Recife and Fortaleza and raves about the beaches, hotels and guys! Caveat... It is hot and humid there most of the time.
Florinapolis is great summer beach resort, but no rent boy saunas there.

There are actually 2 rent-boys saunas in Florianópolis, G3 (formerly Thermas Hangar) and Oceano. I saw that there were two saunas there but they seemed to be a trek from the beach resorts of my preference. The resort was also very expensive for that time of year, my leave cannot be moved any further forward, it has to be taken nye week at the latest.

I am not keen on taking buses to beaches for a number of reasons, had that been an option for me, there are cheaper central hotels in Rio that I could have taken and still used the beaches in Copacobana or Ipanema.

when i wrote about vans or buses, i was talking about fortaleza. in fortaleza the central beach is not much up to, and you have to go out of town.

when in rio, i was in copacabana or ipanema and i was walking to the beach. most recently in ipanema and i do not intend to change that.

A few comments for you consideration.

I have been to Recife a number of times, maybe 10. To be honest I don't like the city that much and visit only because I have good friends there. The city is large, not very clean in most areas. Boa viagam, where most tourists stay is not dissimilar to Copa, high rises along a very long city beach with a series of reefs out in the ocean. Okay but not as interesting a neighborhood as Ipanema or Copacabana. The old old city of Olinda is very interesting to visit, some nice pousadas which may be better priced in this high season. But it is not near any good (non-polluted) beach. Olinda does have the beat carnaval in Brasil but not applicable here.

There are two garoto saunas which I am sure you have researched. Both are clean and well-presented. I have not been to Blue Thermas in a number of years so cannot comment on the number/quality of trade. Seemed a popular local gay meeting place if I recall.

Boa Vista can get busy on weekends. Don't know if they still do it but Saturday nights you could spend the entire night, free clean rooms and they put on a really nice breakfast Sunday morning, rather unique!

If you want to balance some time in Rio with another cheaper (perhaps, again a peak travel period) have you considered Belo Horizonte? No beach but the boys are supposed to be excellent. Sort of like POA, a couple of days for sex overload.

Final comment, considering cost, you have t factor in transportation costs to either Fortaleza or Recife. Recife is a 2 1\2 hour flight, Fortaleza bit more. A random check on airlines just post Xmas to after New Year shows lowest at around 1900 $R, very expensive , gig to for. Of course , if you can fly in to one of the NE cities from Europe may be a different game.

As for Floripa, there are saunas there, but they are not saunas with rentboys.

We rent a car at Floripa airport to move around. Cheap and easy.

But Galheta is a huge beach and there were not so many people the couple of times I went there. Some of them were attractive but it is not that easy to be a voyeur there, because of the size of the beach and the number of persons on it.
