A carrack (#16) was a late medieval ship that rocked a lot on the waves. Paphos (#13) was the Greek city dedicated to the worship of Aphrodite, the goddess of sexual love. Houghmagandy (#24) certainly sounds Scottish. I suspect that #3 and maybe #21 and 22 are attempts at phonetic English transcriptions of French terms. St. George slaying the dragon is a standard icon for Britain, but I don't understand the meaning of #23. And, no, I didn't look up any of this. Quote
