Guest sabaisabai Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Hi all. I need some assistance from the expats living in Pattaya. I am about to become one. Have a property and foresee the need for hiring some trades people. ie: carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, tile installers, etc. Has anyone used someone in the Pattaya area that they would recommend. (I find that this is usually the best way to find good craftsmen...by recommend.) Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I highly recommend the man I use, Doon. I have been using him for years and I recommend him to everyone. He does everything, and I mean literally everything, both major work and minor, except for air conditioning. His work is professional, competent, and he guarantees his work. His prices are very reasonable. He does not subcontract out any of his work. He uses his own people for everything. His contact number is 081-694-6206. For air conditioning I've used a few different outfits. I don't have one I recommend over another. They all seem to do excellent work. I would simply find an air conditioning service close to wherever you live. For any kind of computer work, I recommend Killin. Killin speaks English and his work is as good as it gets. He comes to your home. If he needs to take your computer to his shop, he takes it and brings it back. Everyone I've sent to him won't use anyone else. His contact number is 081-295-3860. Quote

I need some work done on my apartment and have heard some horror stories. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Does anyone have any good suggestions of reliable people in Bangkok? I can't help you with Bangkok, but in case nobody responds I would still call Doon. Not that he is going to go to do work in Bangkok, but he may know good, reliable people in Bangkok. If he has a recommendation, that would be better than nothing. You might also see if you can find any Bangkok recommendations on the Thai Visa forum. Quote
Guest jtrack33 Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Doon sounds your man. Now to help you find a huge range of supplies at a good(NOT HomePro/Homework prices!) price. While I was building my house in Ubon, I used the provincial builder's merchants. They are huge and have everything from fancy bathroom fittings to re-bar and steel beams. When I was picking out tiles, the guy at the store in Ubon had a hand-held computer thingy and by the time I was finished and paid, all the tiles were on a pallet and dropped into my pickup. Now it seems only such good service and range of materials at unbelievable prices(They sell paint brushes by the dozen at a price less than you'd pay for one in Home pro..they sell ready made windows with multiple openings in good hard wood for Bht320 and cheap strip light holders for Bht25 for example) is available outside Bangkok. I had imagined they would be a one-off, but while in Khon Kaen a while back I found one of a chain called Global House near KK airport. They have other branches at Roi Et and Udon Thani. They are on a par with the one in Ubon. But just recently, Global House has opened a new branch on the Chonburi bypass, about 4 kms after the Chonburi Motorway(Highway 7) turn-off if you are heading away from Pattaya. It is on the left side of the road going from Pattaya at a junction for Bang Saen...only about 3 kms from the center of Chonburi town. It is huge and painted light green and yellow. The staff there are also cute and Isaany and will jump at a chance to smile and help you, but unlike at Home Pro/Homeworks, will keep their distance if not asked and won't try and thrust endless water heater promotions at you. They insist on taking everything to your car. I guarantee that if you have no intention of buying anything, you will come out of there with something useful that you never knew existed in Thailand. It seems you should take Khun Doon along there. I live in Bangkok and now regularly drive down there to buy bits and pieces for my condo. All the doors in my condo I changed for teak, I brought from Global House, Khon Kaen by pickup. Quote

Except you'd better make sure he knows your street. A few months ago I rang him on GB's reccommendation, to come to View Talay 5C on Thrappaya Road, Jomtien to fix my Apple Mac laptop which was having trouble connecting to the internet with a Router supplied by Maxnet. After I had clearly explained in detail the simple directions to View Talay 5C he continued to profess not to know where it was and couldn't possibly come for that crazy reason. I thought this guy must be a nuthead not to be able to find such a prominent Pattaya building. About three days later I got a text from him saying if I still wanted him he was willing to come. By that time I'd had it fixed. Just a bizarre footnote to GB's no doubt well founded enthusiasm. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Except you'd better make sure he knows your street. Sometimes I have trouble trying to explain where I live too. In that situation I take my phone to a neighbor or nearby motorcycle taxi driver and ask him to do the explaining. That never fails. Quote
Guest Asmerom Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Sometimes I have trouble trying to explain where I live too. In that situation I take my phone to a neighbor or nearby motorcycle taxi driver and ask him to do the explaining. That never fails. I have never had the slightest trouble explaining where I live, to countless Thai speaking visitors, who understand the directions without the slightest difficulty.I live at the heart of Jomtien, not tucked away on the inexplicable dark side. And Killin speaks very adequate English as you point out, being one of his attractions. Surely you don't require a neighbour's help explaning to this fluent English speaker the nature of the work you need him to do. Do you live on a main PATTAYA thoroughfare like THRAPPAYA ROAD in a 24 storey landmark building like VIEW TALAY 5C opposite the unmissable entrance to VIEW TALY 1 and 2 at the crossroad with THREPPASIT ROAD? What resident of Pattaya would be unable to find his way there? Well, there's at least one. Killin, it seems. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Surely you don't require a neighbour's help explaning to this fluent English speaker the nature of the work you need him to do. That's true. Of course I neither said he speaks fluent English nor did I say I needed help from a neighbor to explain the nature of my computer problem, but I suppose that doesn't matter, does it . . . I have never had the slightest trouble explaining where I live Well bully for you. What, exactly, is your point? Do you wish to make him appear incompetent because he failed to understand your directions? What on earth does that have to do with his ability to work with computers? He happens to be a fantastic computer person, even if he can't figure out where you live. Quote
Guest Asmerom Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Well bully for you. What, exactly, is your point? There is no point. I said quite clearly in my original post it was simply "a bizarre footnote". Isn't that clear enough for you? I was motivated to reply by your sneering suggestion that his apparent inability to navigate the main thoroughfares of Pattaya was actually entirely down to my own inability to explain where I live. However, this is my last coment on this subject and I leave the last triumphant word with you , as usual. Quote

What "sneering suggestion?" I said I go to a neighbor or a nearby motorcycle taxi driver when I'm having difficulty getting someone to understand my directions, and that's exactly what I do and what I was trying to suggest you do if the need arises. Isn't that terrible? What's the problem about that? To you that's a "sneering suggestion" saying that you are not capable of explaining where you live? Based on your post directly above this one, if you want to see who writes "sneering suggestions," just look in a mirror. Quote

You sure are lucky! I live in the heart of Bangkok very close to one of the main roads. Yet, invariably I am met with blank stares when I give my address in English or Thai for anything that needs to be delivered. Even when presented with a large A4 size map in Thai and an arrow pointing to the condo, in my experience many Thais find it quite difficult both to understand and give detailed directions. I once had a frustrating/hilarious 20 minutes in a taxi when even I could not fully understand a map a Thai friend had sent. We were on the outskirts of the city and had just overshot the soi by about 100 meters. I called my friend, gave the phone to the taxi driver, after which a long 5 minute conversation took place. I knew we had gone too far but the driver insisted we had to go on for another kilometer. Another phone conversation got us nowhere, so I inisisted we turn and go back. Eventually we found the soi and the marker we had missed earlier. Quote
