It's how we arrived at such things as a clash of rhinos or a parliament of rooks. Despite all that creative effort, we have no collective nouns for the humble penis, escorts or people like us who hire them. I'm sure there are other nouns that need a descriptive term. It's preventing me from writing. So I throw out this challenge: create a collective nouns for the penis and escorts. Perhaps there are other orphaned nouns out there. A crowd of people told me to donate a collection of collective nouns, but, at the time I had a class of students working on a colony of ants. A bunch of rumors went around about that, but a flock of defenders saved me. The faculty was none too happy, but their babbles brought a troop of leaders who sneered.
