The End of Sunee Plaza

That's your opinion, an opinion I do not share. Do you suggest we hide the truth and stop reporting these incidents? Are we to stop our 'whining' because you've unilaterally decided it serves no useful purpose?

Whining was too harsh a word to use. Reporting the news is one thing, but commentary and opinion is another. For example, FOX news, the USA station known for it's propaganda, does not just report the news, it then slants it or spins it to serve it's purposes. Dwelling on druggies and pedos only reinforces a negative image of Sunnee. Sorry GB, did not mean to imply you are a FOX. But some forums, I believe, have banned pedo, underage and related posts so I suppose I am not the only person who thinks this way.

Let me see if I understand what you are saying. If we all pretend that Sunee is not filled with boys on drugs and pedos then it will all go away. All the normal people who will visit Sunee will only see roses and smell perfume? Have you ever heard of an Ostrich?

Peek-a-Boo, I can't see you,

Everything must be grand.

Boo-ka-Pe, they can't see me,

As long as I've got me head in the sand.

Peek-a-Boo, it may be true,

There's something in what you've said,

But we've got enough troubles in everyday life,

I just bury me head.

I've got a radical counter suggestion. Why don't I, GB and everyone else with a sense of decency keep reporting the truth about Sunee until the authorities get so embarrassed that they put an end to this disgrace to humanity, or to you prefer seeing a bunch of kids on drugs, and little boys being molested by pedos. You may regaurd my comments as a put down, but really what do you see when you are in Sunee? I'm not looking for either little boys or drugs, and yet in less then ten minutes I could easily discern that these things where a very big part of Sunee. So I repeat--how could you NOT see this?

some forums, I believe, have banned pedo, underage and related posts so I suppose I am not the only person who thinks this way.

First, start spelling it correctly. It's "Sunee," pronounced "SOO nee." It is not pronounced "sunny" like a sunny day.

Ok, so dwelling on the druggies and pedos reinforces a negative image of Sunee Plaza. So what? When the druggies and pedos are finally cleaned out, there won't be a negative image to reinforce anymore and no reason to "dwell" upon it anymore.

I fail to see any valid reason why reporting facts and permitting discussion, whether a negative image is reinforced or not, should not be permitted. To do that would mean that we ignore the problems and pretend that no such problems exist, just like Ahmadinejad's claim that homosexuals do not exist in Iran. (Well maybe not. They kill the ones they discover.)

Some forums, as in more than one? Would you mind telling me which forums have banned such posts? If some forums have banned these posts, does that mean that the rest of the forums ought to follow suit? Perhaps you're not the only person who thinks your way. I don't dispute that at all. I'm sure you're right. Strangely enough, there are also people who do not think your way. I'm one of them.

In my opinion, the image of Sunee Plaza that these posts might convey is not the issue. The fact that bars still employ under-age boys and pedos still seek them out is the issue. You are going to have to carefully explain why this forum, or any forum, would be better serving the public interest by not reporting about the raids, not reporting about the pedo arrests, not reporting about drug arrests, and not reporting about under-age boys, whether they work in the bars or freelance, and the possible consequences of sex with under-age boys, before I would find myself in agreement with you. As a matter of fact, I am in complete agreement with every word KhorTose wrote in his post above.

Oddly, I always thought it was pronounced "SUE nee". Now I find it is pronounced "SOO nee" like a sony television. Learn something every day!

KhorTose these are big words and I am glad the authorities are listening to you. May I join with you and add to the effectiveness of your campaign?

Ok sarcasm over - just which authorities have you been in touch with? I think adding comments to a few forums which I suspect no Thais in authority read is not very effective.

Or is my scepticism misplaced and you have actually done more than just report here?

That's good. Today you get to learn something new. "SOO" is pronounced as the first three letters of "soon." "SUE" is the name of of a boy immortalized by Johnny Cash, also pronounced that way. Flip a coin and take your pick. I know of no words in which "SOO" would be pronounced as the first two letters of "Sony." Do you (or is that pronounced 'yo' as in 'yo-yo')?

Suggestion. Why don't the bar owners work with Mayor and police to establish checkpoints/barricades during the evening bar hours. This was done years ago under the social order policy of Minister Khun Purachai in the Bangkok bars. I believe there are 3 entrances to the Sunee. The police, police volunteers or monitors with police oversight could check ID's for underagers. Bar workers and residents would have passes. No system is full proof but it sends a message people are working together to address the problem.

I think that's an excellent suggestion, but I think it would have to include the sois that lead up to Sunee Plaza as well, for it to be truly effective. In any case, your idea would at least go a long way to help clean up Sunee Plaza itself.

No, I don't see SOOnee "filled" with boys on drugs or pedos. Nor brigades of pedos as GB reported. Mostly I see older farang sitting around having a drink and chatting with friends. Yes, in the past there was a greater presence of boys and men looking for them and boys using drugs. Now the drug scene seems to be on what some refer to as Soi Yabba which is just outside of the plaza. And for sure I don't see roses and smell perfume. My comments were to give reasons why I believe the Plaza will cease to exist, which was the topic of the post raised by GT.

Nor brigades of pedos as GB reported.

I always enjoy it when people both misquote me and also attempt to entirely change the context of a statement, and even do that multiple times. This is the second time you've done that in this thread and it still doesn't work. Are you planning to do that a third time?

What I wrote was, "I see no valid excuse at all for bars to intentionally flout the law by hiring under-age boys. Doing so may satisfy the pedophile brigade, but look at the effect on everybody else."

If you can't figure out the meaning of what I wrote and if you can't figure out that I never 'reported' that there are brigades of pedos in Sunee Plaza, especially in the sense by which you are trying to twist my use of the word "brigade," then I can only think you lack certain cognitive skills.

If you really have to resort to misquoting and attempting to change context as a means of making your case and enhancing your argument, then your argument didn't hold much water in the first place.

What do you want to do? Do you want to continue twisting my words or do you want to post a valid, reasonable, well thought out argument in favor of your position about ending reports of under-age boys, drugs, and pedos in Sunee Plaza?

I doubt that would be forthcoming. The trouble is that such reports are an uncomfortable truth to which some posters here would rather no-one draw undue attention because they fear the truth is too close to home. They would rather everyone act like the 3 wise monkeys - see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

Carry on GB and allow such reporting. Those who fear it or don't like it can always turn their blind eye on SGF.

No GB, there will not be a third time. You have the last word, as usual.

To be fair there are underage boys in every part of pattaya that are working boys just as there are in bangkok and anywhere else there are tourist. The thing about Sunee is that it is so compact an area that everything that goes on is open to scrutiny. Sunee will forever have the reputation it does and there will always be those that refuse to see any improvement in the area. To those that will not see any improvement there is little that can be done. For the others we can continue to support the bars that follow the rules and enjoy the Sunee ambiance. To me there is nothing better than sitting at an open bar with friends and enjoying the constant stream of characters that pass by.

100 percent agree with you luvthai. The constant stream is really the true charm of the area. I have found no place on earth like it.

When I am in Rio, there is one restaurant that at night turns into a cruising spot for sauna boys and the like. It is enjoyable and fun but far too dangerous to pick up guys from there.

In Sao Paulo, there is a gay park that is overflowing with rent boys. Like Rio, again too dangerous to pick up guys.

Sunee has a charm about it and I hope that the refreshing air bars continue to thrive and that more and more characters come and go through the area.

I see much less of this there now than in the past and there is certainly no smell of roses in the air. I think your reasons are quite valid Laurence. I hope they are not true but only time will tell.

Well, I have learned something new today as well. I always thought it was pronounced the opposite of more like the call of a pig. There was once a character who reported on the gossip on the area and I think his name was Sonny of Sunee. If your pronunciation is correct, that would be pronounced Sunny of Sunny. :) NO? Perhaps I had too many drinks tonight to understand any of this and I need to bury myself into my pillow and sleep on it.

No. That is not what I wrote at all. Have another look at my post.

What's the hard part? Ok, we'll use Jomtien's spelling. It is pronounced "SUE nee." It is NOT pronounced "sunny," like a sunny day. That's what I said in my post above.

I do get it now. Thanks. Perhaps we should just start using the spelling Suenee? :) That would make it easier for me.

Fine with me. You get to be the one who changes all the signs that already say "Sunee."

The part that's on my "I Don't Get It" list is the number of people who insist on spelling it "Sunnee" or "Sunny." I have yet to ever see a sign, ad, flier, or anything else around here that spells it any way other than "Sunee." Of course, most of that comes from people who still think we're "FAIR-rang."

Well,no, it's not clear to me. If words in English beginning with "sun" like in sunshine, sunken, sunlight, etc are pronounced as "son" like in a male child, why then is "sun" in "sunee", pronounced as SOO? Yes, I know, it really is a problem with transcription and defies logic. (those interested can look up the difference between transcription/transliteration and argue about that). Why not make it easy and spell the name as SUNNI PLAZA (same same the Muslim Sect) this would make it easier for the Arabs when they take over the plaza as predicted by GT. Assuming the Arabs are not Shia in which case it would become Shiite Plaza.

A lot of folks already consider it to be Shite Plaza

So, GT is absolutely right: Sunnee Plaza is dead, long live Soonee Plaazaa.

Perhaps because that's the way Madam Sunee spells it, despite the way she pronounces it.

To be fair there are underage boys in every part of pattaya that are working boys just as there are in bangkok and anywhere else there are tourist. The thing about Sunee is that it is so compact an area that everything that goes on is open to scrutiny.

The problem is as it always has been, corruption.

Three years ago in Bangkok there was a concerted effort by various police chiefs, on orders from above, to clean up the underage sex trade in the city. A year of intense activity saw many arrests and a lot of bars/clubs in the Silom and Nana Plaza areas were thankfully forced to clean up their act. However over the past 5-6 months the availablity of underage workers has increased considerably and near my home in Bangkok there are at least three bars where it is common knowledge that underage workers are available and their presence mingled with 'legal' workers spills out onto the streets thanks to the BIB being under orders to turn a blind eye.

On a number of occasions recently both of my housekeeper's children ( 13&15 yrs of age) and their friends have been approached more frequently on the street of an evening on their way home from school by punters seeking the underage trade. The reason in this area is that a certain police chief is due to retire at the end of the year and to bump up the value of his handover package he needs to increase the gratuities he rakes in from the bars/clubs in the area. So increasing the leeway his officers afford the club trading in children also increases his monthly take from these businesses therefore making his retirement pot from whoever buys his patch of Bangkok even more valuable.

There has always been a valuation of the take from businesses to determine the payoff when various police chiefs retire/move on but during the past year with the economy so drastically changing for the worse for most Thais corruption has increased and some clubs/bars and police officers are taking full advantage of the situation.
