I'll let someone else address your other questions. As for ID cards, under Thai law a foreigner must have his passport with him at all times. Most people don't do that, however, for fear of losing it. There are photo shops all over the place and you won't have any problem finding one. They can make an ID card size copy of the passport pages the police would want to see if you are stopped. They'll make the card and laminate it for you at a very minimal cost. In most cases that is acceptable, although you should be aware that the police do not have to accept that if they choose not to. However, I do not know of any cases in which a farang was stopped and the laminated card was not accepted. That should be good enough, but I won't guarantee it.

In most cases, the laminated card is acceptable. However, when it comes to checking in to a hotel and cashing travel checks, you definitely must have your actual passport with you.

I wouldn't even try to list the best bars in Bangkok, and in Phuket you can check out all the bars inn one evening as they are all grouped together. You can just go bar to bar and see for yourself. I have a personal liking of Passport Pub in Phuket. It is a small go-go bar, with friendly staff, and I found a long term boyfriend there.

The Royal Paradise Hotel is (from what I have seen looking in) a very nice place and wll located in the "Paradise Complex", which is where all the gay show and go-go bars are located. Now for the bad news....they are not very gay friendly, and have at times been completely unfriendly to gays. I don't know if they will allow joiners. You have location, location, location however.

Would like to hear from you after your stay with more info about the Paradise Hotel.

Also, there are some late night venues south of Paradise a kilometer or two. They have live music till dawn, and some karaoke. They are not completely gay, but very gay friendly, and many of the bar workers go there when the bars close about 1:00. Some of them are also gay owned.
