Sleep Study at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital

The Sleep Clinic at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital is well worth a trip for those in need of a sleep study. Here are a few things I learned from this trip.

The Sleep Study for sleep apnea cost 14,000 bath for a night at the hospital. That is a good price as the quotes I had from LA were 8,000 USD. This was a significant difference so I decided to do it in Thailand.

I had to go to see an Ear Nose and Throat doctor in order to get an appointment for this study. It costs 700 baht for this even though I was told there would be no charge. I had tried on the phone to get in touch with them many times for information but no one ever seemed to know what I was talking about. If you want this study, call the hospital and then ask for the ENT center and ask for Sleep Apnea test. They do not know the word sleep study.

They only take one patient per night on this and you can schedule in advance. I had mine scheduled a few days after I went to find out about the study.

They told me to arrive at 4:30 which I did. I was weighed and they checked my blood pressure and temperature and took me to a room. The room was nice with a nice view and it was private. It had a mini fridge and microwave and coffee maker. There were toothbrushes and toothpaste inside the bathroom as well as soap and shampoo. The room was clean and nice. The tv has satellite and there were plenty of movies on over the night and next morning.

I was served dinner after I placed my order for dinner and the next morning’s breakfast. The dinner was chicken cordon blue and it tasted good. The French fries were not good but the mean was good and tasty.

At 7:30 a nurse came in to talk to me and gave me a run down and clothes to change into. At 9, the lady came in to start putting the electronics on my face, chest and legs to monitor everything. It took about an hour to do this. The boyfriend watched in laughter as the process turned me into the bride of Frankenstein. I had so many cords running out of me that I could not move very much. She said that I needed to pee before she hooked me up as it would be hard to do this all night. I did that and tried to make sure I had none left in me so I could sleep without having to pee in a container. ;)

They brought in a fruit platter for me for the night. As I was hooked up to thing, it was impossible to eat but it was a nice touch.

I finished the study at 6:30 am. It was an easy night to sleep. The room was comfortable and the bed was fine. The cords did not bother me so much I could not sleep at all but they did keep me up and down most of the night. As a result, they say that most who cannot sleep as well cannot get the accurate results needed. I was able to get what they needed.

I was told the doctor would be in at 8:00 am and she didn’t show. At 9:30 they took me to her office after I checked out of the hospital. She gave me the results as well as a copy of everything. She said that I had mild to moderate sleep apnea and needed a CPAP machine. She gave me a number in BKK to call to get a machine. I have not done this yet but will. She said the prices ranged from 30,000 – 80,000 baht. That seems high to me, anyone else know the prices?

I thought the entire study was well done and professional and it did get me the testing I needed at a greatly reduced price. Bangkok Pattaya is a great hospital and this overnight visit was very well worth my time and effort.

I am getting a CPAP soon and have been doing a bit of research. Here is a good place to start:

You really do amaze (and entertain) me. Your gullibilty appears to be limitless or maybe its the funds that are limitless and you're just thrashing about looking for yet more exotic ways of getting rid of the tiresome surplus. You're clearly not heavily into the Stock Market.

Earlier, you delightfully chronicled how to spend a fortune on diet gurus who appeared to have convinced you that giving them pots of your freely available cash would somehow dissolve years of accumulated fatty deposits resulting from years of dissipation and hedonistic self indulgence, which, judging by your recent posts has hardly abated.

And now, Heaven help us, you put all your trust in some "sleep consultant" advising you to throw yet more of your limitless funds at some strangely entitled contraption --what was it_CRAP-was that its name? I forget. It was four letters.

Have you checked if the CONSULTANT owns, or has shares in this Company she recommends?

Dear GT, I'm quite sure you will go your own way, plough your own furrow and, happily, keep us all well informed (and highly amused) at your latest foray into the unknown, untested and downright quirky pseudo scientific world of MaQuackerie Incorporated.

By the way, if you've really, actually lost any tonnage recently, how much has it cost you per ounce, $$$$$ ? On second thoughts ,I don't think any such consideration will ever have entered

your head. The head is a very heavy organ ; maybe emptying it of all these flighty solutions and just doing the obvious would help.

Thank you for the wonderfully witty and enlightened post. It will go down in history as one of my five all time favorites. You amuse me as much as I do you. Thank you. :)

If life were spent just doing the obvious,it would be so boring and dull. That is not something I would ever be interested in. :)

I guess I should not mention my time as a Hare Krishna child? or my stint in the Church of Scientology. Well, I guess not need to go into details about it as it was ages ago. :)

GT, I had a slightly used CPAC machine @ $200 USD. The previous owner died in his sleep! Serioulsly.

CPAC are available on-line at discount prices much lower than a hospital or medical supply would charge. Maybe $500.

But they must be adjusted to each individual's need.

Oh, where was the bf during your sleep test? Under the bed?

Thanks. I found some on Amazon.com as well.

The bf went home. He wanted to stay but he snores louder than I do and that would have kept me up all night as usual. Perhaps I should have had him take the sleep test. :)

The bf went home.

I am much honoured to be elevated to No5 on your memorable list and will strive, like a one star Michelin chef, to climb one more step to No4 on your Ladder of Immortality though I reckon, like the pursuit of happiness ,it will happen more by accident than design.

But to get to the real point of this note ; in an earlier thread dated 4th July you gently lifted a corner of your kitchen curtain to shed a brief light on scenes of domestic bliss in the blossoming GT household. When are you going to whip off your pink pinny and open the curtains again to reveal the next anxiously awaited installment? You did warn us, it was experimental and weren't sure how long it would last. Is it proving as economical as you'd hoped? And how's the Cooking? Surely that quote above is not as ominous as it sounds."The bf went home"; nothing to do with your cooking I hope.

Have you tried those BLUE ELEPHANT products? They come in black tins of coconut cream to which you add the black packaged BLUE ELEPHANT Thai Paste such as Massaman Curry Paste made from freshly ground spices. You just follow the recipe adding your choice of meat or fish and vegetables. They're great, easy and taste genuine, probably because they are. They are stocked by Carrefour and maybe others. Although it pains me to say it, being British, surely Carrefour beats Tesco on all counts.Their fish counter is way ahead of Tesco's as is all their ready cooked stuff on sale ; the best of which are the selection of Currys being cooked in the centre of the food hall rather than along the side.

Well, I can't wait to hear how the "noble experiment' is thriving (or not) hopefully before that CRAP machine arrives and shockingly deprives us of all further posts. It may arrive with instructions only in Thai. If so, I suggest you get your boyfriend, if he's returned, to plug it into the nearest available orifice and promptly let us all know the electrifying results.

As you rightly say," Never a dull moment."

The boyfriend went home as I actually wanted to try to get accurate results of the sleep study. I was back in his strong arms the next morning and when I arrived at our love's nest, he was anxiously awaiting me with a thousand sweet kisses. (of course, he did that so I would would not see the cute katory sneaking over the fence as he planted those wet kisses on me). :)

The experiment is going fine. I am happy with it and he says he is. We have not bored of each other yet. We are not eating out more than once a day and some days, not at all. Life just keeps us entertained each day. Bliss.

Bliss.

Well, GT, I would have to say you take a cheap shot or two rather graciously.

But (just a little humor here, now...), "bliss?" Geez, sounds like Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. And I'm wondering who's cooking dinner in the kitchen with the formal dress and high heels!

(Truly glad things are going well for you)

I try. :) Perhaps just too many vodka shots over the lifetime. :)

Thanks. I don't feel like Ozzie and Harriet yet but working on it. This is more of a typical day in my home. I don't think even I over indulge this much. :)

You've always struck me as more of an Ozzie Osbourne than an Ozzie Nelson

I didn't go for a sleep study, but I studied in my sleep . . . way back when they used to sell language instruction records, to learn in your sleep. I wanted to learn Spanish. The trouble was the record kept skipping, so I only learned to stutter in Spanish.

Thanks GB, I needed a good chuckle this morning.

Thanks. He was my hero as a child. I just loved all the make up. Of course, I prefer more color than black and white but his was so cool back then.

I see myself as a cross between Ozzie Osbourne, Harriet Nelson and Dame Edna.

I read this article today and thought of you my dear. If the FAA believes it, so do I. :)

Two commercial airline pilots who fell asleep in the cockpit and overshot their landing by 15 miles have been cleared to return to work.

Earlier this year, the Go! flight from Honolulu to Hilo cruised over its landing target at 21,000 feet.

Alarmed air traffic controllers tried to contact the cockpit a dozen times but got no response for 17 minutes.

The pilots were subsequently fired, but suspensions issued by the US aviation watchdog have now been served.

Officials feared for the safety of the 40 passengers on board when they got no response from the Hawaiian carrier's short-haul Flight 1002 on 13 February.

Some 44 minutes into what should have been a 45-minute flight, contact was finally established and the plane was ordered to return to land.

Sleep disorder

The US National Transportation Safety Board ruled in June that both pilots "unintentionally fell asleep".

Captain Scott Oltman was suspended for 60 days by the the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) for careless and reckless operation of an aircraft and for failing to maintain radio communications.

The FAA suspended First Officer Dillon Shepley for 45 days for careless and reckless operation of a plane.

Both suspensions were completed on 9 September, the FAA said.

After February's incident, Mr Oltman was diagnosed with "severe obstructive sleep apnea" which causes people to stop breathing repeatedly in their sleep, preventing a restful night.

No action was taken against the carrier because it was deemed to have acted within guidelines and had offered the two pilots sufficient rest-time between flights.

As you see, I've picked up on the most salient point of your post and bask in the knowledge that someone, somewhere can spare me a thought.

Its strange you should be connecting sleep and me just shortly after I had been engaged in a vain attempt to explain to the Security Guard in my Condo, who had been fetched up 15 floors to confront me by the girl in the next door room who had, apparently, been frightened when I banged furiously on her door at 7am this morning wanting to discover the source of those intrusive nocturnal tapping noises emanating from her room which had annoyingly deprived me of a good night's sleep.

After many minutes of hopelessly trying to convey my complaint to three hostile Thais, the noisy angry argument ended up with the Security Gusrd saying to me, "Will you please say you're Sorry "." Me?, Sorry?", I expostulated.(for GB, "cried out"). But I won't go on. Suffice it to say that I did what any healthy, frustrated, misunderstood Englisnman abroad would do, caught up in a sticky situation. I retired to my room to sulk and shave my legs.

The noisesome intrusions from next door in Condo 5C are nothing new.

The previous occupant was from some unpronounceable Eastern European country who talked as if yelling to his mates on the other side of a valley. And when drunk, took pleasure in enhancing his voice by bawling into a loud hailer till well past midnight when they would begin singing.

At 6pm. every night, just as the light is fading, the raucous voices from the swimming pool, the manic screaming of a few unruly kids, and the distant but frequent, mournful yells of some suicidal sounding, full throated maniac all fill the night air against an irritating background of constant traffic rumbling up and down Thrappaya Road. I've taken to closing the many windows and turning on the Air Conditioning.

Of course, at Condo 5C, all this is just the mild accompaniment to the solo performance ceaslessly going on at the New View Talay going up alongside. There, they regularly hurl tons of steel girders down long flights of steps, play on huge sheets of aluminium as if they were kettle drums and daily mix enough concrete to bury the whole of The Greens together with Al Gore, Michael Moore and half the Democratic Party.

As that luminous sage of 17th century London famously said, "A man who is tired of Pattaya is tired of life". Though he probably pronounced it wrong. That's me folks. I'm off to taste the idyllic rural life somewhere North of Chiang Mai; to rent a home with no near neighbours; I hope. "A house in the country". Just a few green acres and hopefully no uninvited intruders.

As for sleep, I've given it up as a bad habit.

I'm glad you had good results. My experience was just the opposite. I did get all the trimmings as you did, but when I brought the test results back to my doctor, he went balistic as there were many critical elements missing from my study. I get the impression yours was an initial study and perhaps they can do that pretrty good, but mine was a 5 year follow up to determine if my oxygen levels needed to be changed. My doctor told me that essentially the results were worthless. He was most insappointed that there was not a report, only a graph which did not provide the information he needed to determine if he needed to up my pressure.

But I must say that the service and care was exceptional. Just be sure what you are getting. When mine was done they started late waiting for the tech to come from Bangkok. He was not an hospital employee. He worked for the local CPAP provider and was not a trained sleep specialist. His reason for being was to try and sell me a CPAP.

As you seem to have remained awake while reading this discussion, it might be you're in need of this machine.

About five years ago my friend became concerned at interruptions in my breathing while asleep. (One isn’t aware of these things if sleeping alone, another advantage of having a Thai boy.)

I went to Bumrungrad Hospital where a sleep study was performed. Analysis indicated there was a problem, but it was not serious enough to require remediation.

I felt the study was well done, and was quite satisfied, as I have always been at Bumrungrad.

I used to have bad snoring problems when I slept but I now take a xanax before bed and I'm told I'm silent now.

CPAP machine doesn't make you sleep. It keeps you from snoring.
