Guest lurkerspeaks Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 In the event of a zombie apocalypse, where would you try to set up homebase at, and why? Quote
Members MsGuy Posted October 26, 2013 Members Posted October 26, 2013 Well, taking Walking Dead as a working paradigm, it's really pretty simple: Weld a sharpened steel stake to the business end of a kaiser (sling) blade and you have a durable and effective halberd to whack those pesky zombies. As demonstrated by medieval Swiss mercenary companies, a fighting square of halberdiers is extraordinarily difficult to break into even by trained, armored soldiers, much less rotten skulled walkers. You just keep wacking away 'till they all stop moving. With a little training a square is a fairly manueverable formation so while it might take a bit if there's enough of them, in the end the halberdiers win every time. So the underlying problem with Rick's bunch isn't technological or even organizational, it's that theiir tactics are way too denfensive. They let the zombies take most of the initiative. A prison's ok for a last ditch fall back position, but not as the primary focus of your efforts. Yah need to get off your duff and burn off those nearbye wooded areas, get yourself clear fields of view for a long way and then adopt a take clear and hold strategy. Wipe out the walkers in your local area (several mile radius) and then do continuous sweeps that pick up wandering newbies before they reach critical mass. JKane and AdamSmith 2 Quote

AdamSmith Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 medieval Swiss mercenary companies ... So the underlying problem with Rick's bunch isn't technological or even organizational, it's that theiir tactics are way too denfensive. They let the zombies take most of the initiative. Bingo. Moreover, the whole meme that society would fall apart under the shock of zombie apocalypse flies in the face of the profit motive and immeasurable commercial potential that would energize the black hearts of private armies, munitions makers, drone manufacturers the world over. Government military too -- even if the executive and legislative fell all apart, General Buck Turgidson et al. could be relied on to take matters into their own hands. In fact the only reason the poor rotting undead would not be wiped off the earth within one week would be precisely the Zombie Industrial Complex's need for an ongoing supply of enemy to justify its existence, and its invoices to client states. Undead population numbers would be stabilized within manageable limits, then carefully maintained as a Credible Threat. One can even imagine some collusion with the brighter and more avaricious zombies who with enough brain-bribery might be turned double agents! ...Ah, for certain kinds of military and intelligence-service minds, such a world would present opportunity without limit. So I would set up home base in the Pentagon. Or possibly (a place I have in fact been to on business) the comfortable, and well secured, San Diego headquarters of drone maker General Atomics. Quote
Guest lurkerspeaks Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Some friends and I were discussing this topic yesterday.. some of our answers were---a super walmart--(food, supplies, guns, etc), Ikea-(semi-comfortable living conditions, plus plenty of swedish meatballs), Costco-(pretty much anything you might need), Cabelas-(all the hunting/safety gear you would need), or if you had large enough group, an entire shopping mall, ala "Dawn of the Dead", Then I came up with a high rise luxury hotel. It would be fairly simple to secure the lowerlevel to keep out zombies. you would more than likely have an on premise restaurant, plenty of sleeping rooms for everyone, a gym for exercise. Another suggestion was disneyland. It is secured by a surrounding fence. It would include lots of restaurants on site, and even some hotels for sleeping.. Quote
