TotallyOz Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 As many on this site that have been around for years know, Brian Boxer's website was the place to go in Thailand whenever you were homesick for the country and its people. There were several times when I would miss the boyfriend and visit Brian's site just to bring back some fond memories of my time spend in the LOS. For anyone new to the web world in Thailand, Brian was a man what took photos of his experiences and he documented them on his website. I have yet to find a better photographic representation of the gay world in Thailand that I saw on his site. Brian died last year and it was a great loss to Pattaya and Thailand. Several years ago, Brian Boxer did not renew his domain name http://www.boxertravels.com/ This happens quite a bit and is not uncommon for people to change e-mails and not renew the names as they are usually forwarded only to the e-mail as a reminder to renew. Another company snapped it up and put an ad word page there. Brian then started his .net site. Many months later, I noticed the initial .com site Brian use to have was on auction. I entered the auction and purchased it and then forwarded it to Brian’s .net site. It stayed that way from the time I purchased it until this week. I have backed up the .net site and put it back on the .com domain as I do not know what will happen or when to the .net site. This will be there for many years to come in an unchanged and unaltered state. I will do nothing with the site and leave it as it was when Brian passed away. I hope I am not offending anyone as I was not a close friend of Brian's and only met him a few times. I just always admired his work and his site. Is it appropriate to have the site left exactly as it is or it is better to place a photo of Brian and a simple statement, In Loving Member and the date of his death? I do not know what will happen to the .net site but have seen a pop hit my computer when I tried to access it this week. I think his site is a living testament to all that is good about Pattaya and the gay men who live in this country and want those that try to access it to be able to find a way to do this easily. I read your posting with interest and fond memories. I too would like to see Brian Wigley’s website site Boxertravels preserved. During the eight years I have lived and worked in Pattaya I have known several people who have contributed enormously to our gay community. But with the utmost respect to these people I have to say I believe no one person has contributed more and been more beneficial in promoting Pattaya than Brian and his website, which actually won an excellence award. I will remember Boxer as a “white man”. He always greeted you with a smile and he never intentionally hurt or offended anyone. His website was and still is one of the most professional and interesting I have ever seen. Like a fortunate few I got to know him well and felt honoured to be able to consider him as a close friend; one that would not hesitate to reprimand you if he felt it was justified. And with some reflection, he was always right because his intentions were totally caring and honourable. At one stage Brian agreed to do some work for the company I am involved with. His contribution turned the centre spread of the old Spice Magazine (Thai Guys) into a feature that most readers looked forward to. He refused to accept any remuneration but agreed to be involved simply because he took great pride in knowing that what he was responsible for producing was highly professional and very good for Pattaya and not just the gay community. But every now and then he would accept an invitation to dinner at a nice restaurant usually coinciding with a visit from my companion Khun Deer. They enjoyed each others company enormously. Brian was one of those people who you thought would be around forever, but sadly a prolonged cancer illness prevented this. One of the last functions Boxer covered was a PGF dinner at Bruno where Deer celebrated his birthday. It was and always will be one of the most memorable and enjoyable gatherings I have ever experienced and Boxer captured the occasion perfectly. Little did anyone know that within two months Boxer, this incredible person who loved life so much and gave so much pleasure to others, would no longer be with us. Brian, and what I feel is a unique website, must have entertained, informed and touched many people and I for one would really appreciate reading of any such experiences. For most of his life in Thailand Brian drove a motor bike. If there was a gay event in Pattaya that was not covered on Boxertravels, it was usually because of an expression that became Boxer’s trademark and one we loved so much… “I never do rain”! I have no idea what is required to keep his memory and his website alive, but if you know of a way GT, then please count me in. Quote
Guest buaseng Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Is it appropriate to have the site left exactly as it is or it is better to place a photo of Brian and a simple statement, In Loving Member and the date of his death? My personal preference and I believe the most suitable way to remember Brian is to leave the site exactly as he left it BUT with an additional front page stating something like: "This is site is maintained and dedicated to the memory of Brian Wigley (Boxer) and his hard work in producing this record of life in Thailand". A suitable photograph of Brian with his years of birth and death should accompany whatever choice of words are used. No other advertising, links etc should be on this page. As I say - just my personal opinion. Quote
Guest Khunatm Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 [quote A suitable photograph of Brian with his years of birth and death should accompany whatever choice of words are used. And since posting earlier I have become aware that jinks of Sawatdee Forum, who knew Brian better than most, has a special link to Boxertravels Archives on his personal website http://jinkscorp.com/holidays/thai/boxer/index.htm Quote
Guest Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I have no idea what is required to keep his memory and his website alive, but if you know of a way GT, then please count me in. Thanks. It is already done and does not cost any money to maintain as the site will not change. The only cost per year is the renewal of the domain name with is tiny and already paid. Other than that, all is done and nothing needed to maintain. Thanks for your offer though. "This is site is maintained and dedicated to the memory of Brian Wigley (Boxer) and his hard work in producing this record of life in Thailand". A suitable photograph of Brian with his years of birth and death should accompany whatever choice of words are used. No other advertising, links etc should be on this page. We can easily add this to the page. There is no advertising, or links on the page at all. It is exactly as he left it. Absolutely nothing will change. The links he had on will stay, nothing else was added or altered and nothing else will be added. See http://www.boxertravels.com as it is up and live. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Gay Thailand....Thank you for perserving Boxer's site. It is a treasure that we should keep. I too feel that an intro page should be added, with perhaps a picture of Boxer and his boyfriend, and an explanation for those who will find the site, and never know the background if it is not provided for them. I know he loved to document his trips with his friend. Again, thanks for perserving the site. I often wondered what might happen to it. Quote
Guest buaseng Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 See http://www.boxertravels.com as it is up and live. Just a note.I have looked several time at Boxer's site (URL above) in the last couple of days and most times it works. However, entering the site twice, it loaded then disappeared immediately to be replaced by one for Deutche Bank. I'm not a computer buff so don't know how or why this is happening. Wonder if anyone else is having the same problem? - if so perhaps someone could look into it? Quote

I had the .com pointed to that for a long time. It takes many providers time to get their system in synch. It is not our popup and it should go away eventually. Quote
Guest GayPattayan Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Thanks, Gay Thailand! Boxer deserves all the recognition we could give him. He was a remarkable guy who contributed so greatly to the gay community. Thanks for preserving this wonderful testament to his life and work. Allen (G.P.) Quote
