TotallyOz Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Violent crime in Pattaya has gone up it seems and you read more and more about the things that happen in this illustrious city by the sea. On a recent trip there, I had dinner with a friend. He said he had just gone to the Big C and Western Union store to send some money to his family and he walked outside and was held up by gunpoint. A gun was pointed into his face and the holder was a teenager he said. While my friend is Farang and not too old to protect himself, he said with a gun aimed at you, you have little choice but to give them what they want. That was money and he emptied out his pockets for the guy. He did not go to the police and the crime was unreported. But, it is scary to see that these things happen here and we don't hear about them or read about them. My suggestion is to always be cautious of your surroundings and those that are watching you. My suggestion is to always be cautious of your surroundings and those that are watching you. Well said! I was surrounded and robbed by three thugs eighteen months ago after leaving an external bank bureau-de-change. Fortunately I had only changed sterling cash to get about 15,000 Baht. I reported it to the police but they said without any witnesses (I couldn't find anyway willing to speak up) they could do nothing and gave the distinct impression that it was an everyday occurrence and not worth the trouble to investigate as there was nothing they could do. I now bring travelers cheques and change quite significant amounts about two or three times a visit (and usually try to do it inside the bank, rather than at an external teller window). I also ensure that I have a couple of reliable and well-known to me beefy escorts from the hotel to accompany me - it's worth the tip I pay them for the peace of mind! - (but I suppose even these guys would be pretty useless if a gun was involved?!). Gaybutton Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Whenever I go to an ATM, I always make sure there are plenty of other people in close proximity. I don't know whether that is a deterrent of whether I have just been lucky, but so far I have never had anything happen to me. To my way of thinking, not that it can't happen, but the odds are far more in my favor that someone won't point a gun in my face when there are many other people right there than if there was nobody else there. I also try to avoid using an ATM at night. Still, with so many kids on these goddamned drugs, you never know how crazy they might be. I'd rather use a drive-up ATM, but so far in Thailand I've never seen any. Quote
Guest Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I have been robbed at gunpoint 2 times in Brazil. Both were at ATM machines. I was not hurt in either one but the emotional scars are still there. On my last trip there in April, the guy that takes good care of me there takes me to a park every night where all the gays congregate. He will not let me talk to those I don't know or that he doesn't know. It is very dangerous. I still sway from his suggestions when my hormones take over. So far I have been lucky. But, I do wonder if this is more of an upward trend for Thailand? Are these things on the rise? Thailand, like Brazil is a very depressed economy and poor people. When access to funds are taken, people do what they have to do to survive. If the bars close, the guys and gals that work there have to find a way to make a living. Either you sell drugs to make good money or you go into a profession that pays well. How many of those professions are there for uneducated Thais? Quote
