TotallyOz Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I dropped by the Hutch store near Tutcom the other day and saw their USB powered modem. It is supposed to give speeds up to 550 kb per second and is about 16k baht per year for the modem and the plan. Anyone tried this? I tried to buy the upgraded modem but they were sold out when I went there and they said it would be back in stock in 1-2 weeks. I have the ATT one for the USA and it is amazing and fantastic. Quote
Gaybutton Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 It is supposed to give speeds up to 550 kb per second and is about 16k baht per year for the modem and the plan. I guess I'm behind the times, but unless you are going to do a hell of a lot of downloading I don't see the point. I'm using MaxNet ADSL for 1000 baht per month and the speeds I consistently get are plenty fast. Even what I download comes in quickly. What am I missing? How is that speed going to provide anything significantly faster than what I already have? Quote
2lz2p Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 It is my understanding that Hutch is a "mobile" phone connection - thus, can use wherever they have a signal -- usually used with laptops/notebooks. I use AIS GPRS (Nokia GPRS telephone - has Nokia software and USB cable) when up country -- 1 Baht per minute, but it is slow. However, a good friend says that AIS now has a faster service (maybe similar to Hutch arrangement), he has just acquired the equipment and says it works fine (sorry, I don't have the cost figures or connection speeds, but will get details later). For more info on hutch: Hutch web site Hutch website on current promotion indicates 153Kbs. Quote

Cost of the modem: THB 6,900 Cost of the multi-sim card (AIS): free Monthly cost for 250 hours: THB 500 (ex VAT) Connection speed: 460.8kbps Download: approx. 200 kbps Upload: approx. 65 kbps Not like adsl high speed, but better than a 56k modem AND absolutely mobile and independent.
