Is this creepy or not?

A former well-liked president married his fifth cousin (Franklin Roosevelt married Eleanor Roosevelt in 1905). They were, nonetheless, related by blood.

A nephew/uncle relationship is unusual and a wee bit shocking, but is it any stranger than the marriage of the Roosevelts?

-

They were fifth cousins, once removed. Franklin's 4 times great grandfather (Nicholas Roosevelt) was Eleanor Roosevelt's 5 times great grandfather. A person has 64 - 4th great grandparents and 128 - 5th great grandparents.

So yeah, an uncle and an nephew is definitely stranger than the Roosevelt situation. The uncle is as directly connected to the nephew as his father or mother.

I think they both need serious help. It is not appropriate at all in my opinion.

Is this any different than twins doing each other?

Somebody told me a couple of hours ago at an all-night diner in Boston (no relevance, just scene-setting ^_^ ) that every one of us H. sapiens is at least 16th cousin of every other.

My 5 watts or so of mentational capacity are not right now up to checking this out. But it sounds plausible.

Isn't the point of these religious or societal rules to avoid having off spring with undue or unusual genetic defects? Therefore if there can be no off spring then there can be no genetic defects, no? So, what difference does it make how closely two men are related?

Like many other "rules", if it doesn't seem right to you, then don't do it.

Best regards,

With RA1 on this 100%. If you don't like it, don't do it. But prescribing and proscribing others' private behavior and "mode of life" -- Senator Sam's oblique but respectful euphemism for homosexuality, and other non-normative but benign behaviors -- is to be done with the utmost trepidation. Methinks.

Well we are finally agreeing on something AS. As long as they love each other and it suits them, then they should be left alone. One question a lot of people couldn't answer is who married Cain and Abel in the Bible? I hope two loving people do not have to suffer because others don't like it. If they kill anyone or hurt someone around them by doing so then it shouldn't be allowed but that's not the case. The same applies to polygamy.. If all the parties involved agree to it then why does the government has to intervene? I personally want one husband and that's it but if others can handle multiple spouses and they agree to it then I have no problem with it either.

The only thing potentially creepy for me would be the reaction of the friend's sister (or brother). If it was just a fling, I wouldn't put other family members through the aggravation. But, if it's a relationship with staying power, then where's the harm? It's not like they're at risk for producing inbred children.

I'll up the ante. Had I been born with an identical twin brother who was also happy and gay, I'd definitely fantasize about a relationship. Narcissistic, yes, but not creepy. Not to me anyway.

I will, and do.

You know we will have an eternal lovers' quarrel in the afterlife if you don't sooner or later let me into your britches in this life.

Please notice the past perfect conditional tense (in all possible senses of the phrase):

Had I been born with an identical twin brother who was also happy and gay, I'd definitely fantasize about a relationship.

Were I to spot a clone of my present-day self, my impulse would be considerably less adductive. 604027-hyt-new-dawn-watchmaking-smiley_r
