Silver Pub, Ubon Ratchathani

Well, there is really a gay bar in Ubon. It is called Silver Pub, and is the NE area of town, on main roads and easy to find.

Was there last night with boyfriend. Arrived about 8:30. About 9:00 they had "Coyote" dancers, I think about 11-12 all together. They started in levis and topless...and then later in the evening danced in tight shorts. There is a runway into the seating area, and three would dance there a few minutes, and then go to dance boxes in the seating area, with three new dancers on runway..and then repear. Not too bad. There was a wide mix of boys, but all looked to be legal..no babies. There were a couple that leaned toward ladyboy, but no competely ladyboy types. There was a small "show" with some lipsingh, at 11:00 but nothing exciting.

They have some weird off rules...Short time is two hours, and is 1000 baht...200 bar, 800 boy. full off is 500 baht, all for bar. quit high, but remember, the next gay bar is several hundred kilometers away.

Overall my inpression was OK. There were also several waiter/managers that were very attentive, so I imagine there were about 25+ available boys. Beer was 150 baht and water 40 baht. I never was able to determine the owners. Not as good at getting al the infor as Gaybutton!

The downers were LOUD music and Laser Lights shining in your eyes.

It sounds very interesting, but awfully expensive, especially for that area. But apparently it's the only game in town, so there's not much choice. At least a game exists at all.

Ubon Ratchatani is about an 8 hour drive from Pattaya, isn't it? Maybe a little less to Bangkok. So, it seems to me people will have to pay the price or do without.

It is a little less than 7 hours to Pattaya, and about 6 hours to Bangkok, but only a one hour plane ride to Bangkok...at 1100 Baht on Air Asia.

Acutually I was impressed with the mixed selection of boys avaiable...from younger looking slim small boys to bulky muscle like guys. Also, they were really dancing...not just standing.

Do you know if this is a relatively new bar or one that has been established for some time? If it's been around for a while, and none of us even knew it existed, then that opens up the possibility of more gay bars in different Thai cities about which we also know nothing. How did you discover this bar?

Also, I didn't quite understand what you meant by 'short time' and 'full off.' My interpretation of that is 'short time' means two hours in the bar's short time room. 'Full off' means you take him back to your place for 2 hours, or whatever the amount of time is. Is that correct? How much time is 'full off'?

I believe that it is a very new bar, probably talking being around for weeks??? Not sure!

My boyfriend's friend works here in town, and has lived here all his life, and he told us about the bar, and went with us for our visit. They said we now have a bar, so I don't think it has been there long. There were a few customers, but I guess we will have to wait to see how long it stays around.

Short time to them is two hours (I don't think they have a room..not sure???) is 1000 baht (200 bar - 800 boy) and Off is Off. Off means you take the boy and determine with him how long and tip..a few hours, overnight, etc. This Off is 500 baht, all to the bar.

I am going to Ubon next week (by air...last time I tried to drive in 7 hours, I got caught for speeding in Buriram..Bht400 on-the-spot fine). If you ask Thai Airways offices on Silom or at the MRT station at Lhad Phrao, they have some surprisingly cheap midweek flights and then you can pick up a car/pickup from Budget at the airport.

Could you kindly tell me if the bar is inside or outside the ring road. A major road north east maybe 2050 to Trakan Phuetphon. Can you recall where it is relative to the Candle Boat park. There used to be a boy shop in a private house near there close to the Catholic church compound.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There is also (or was last July) a sauna named Relaxing Sauna and Spa. It is situated in Prommarat Road Soi 1 near the river (so I guess that's east) - call 045 242 249 for directions. It’s an old Thai house with two wings separated by a little garden. Upstairs from the changing room (with the tiniest lockers I have ever encountered!) is a small gym area and a reading room with a computer. The other wing is much more attractive with a bar, sauna and steam room, several sitting out areas, a video room, 2 dark rooms and a few cabins. Most of the action was in the dark room behind the video room.

The setting is lovely, much like the House of Male in Chiang Mai, but with no restaurant. Entrance was 99 Baht and drinks 40 Baht. One problem was that it is all very dark, so move slowly until you get the hang of the place or you’ll hit something sticking out from a floor or a wall. Another is that foreigners rarely visit except during the Candle Festival, and whilst there’s a natural curiosity, you may only find a few guys interested in going to a cabin with you. But that dark room can be hot and busy!

The 2 nights I went, there must have been about 40 guys by 10.30. If you have a car, you're fine because in that part of town there is no late public transport.

The bar is just off the ring road. If you head east from the intersection nearest to Big C (hwy 212 and ring road) you will turn left (north) at the first light, and go about 300 meters and the bar is on your left back thru a drive towards a small hotel/motel. It isn't signed real well , but there are just a few businees there, so you can look around for it. You drive back between two "buildings" and park there. The bar is on the south side of this parking area.

It is in a fairly quiet commercial area, out of the main part of town.

Doesn't look like the one bar here in Ubon did any better than some in Pattaya!! It is closed.

Inofrmation isn't easy to get, but it seems that the Pub was open through the Candle Celebration, which filled the town with visitors...but sometime around the end of July they closed their doors. No info on any possible reopening, but we can hope.

Glad some of the Pattaya guys made it up to visit the bar before it closed!!

Too bad about the bar. I really enjoyed it when I visited in June. The coyote dancers really put themselves into it, dancing like nobody in Pattaya ever comes close. I had been hoping for a return trip to Ubon just to revisit the bar. Thanks for the heads up on the closing of the bar. It would have been a big disappointment to go all the way to Ubon and no Silver bar, since that was the one and only gay bar in town. Let us know if anything opens to take its place.

Is the Silver Pub still closed? Any other up-to-date information on the gay scene in Ubon?

Yes, to the best of my knowledge the Silver Pub is still closed. There isn't much of a gay "scene" here in Ubon, but there are still a lot of gay boys of course. There are no particular clubs or bars, but they do participate in lots of dance and karoke evenings in the various clubs around Ubon.

I don't know of any cruising areas, but I am sure they are out there somewhere in the area.

Well, I am impressed. I never thought there was any activity outside of the usual haunts of Pattaya, Bangkok, Phuket, Chaing Mai. I always said to the bf, you open go go bar in Roi-Et, we make big money! Oh no, no farang in Roi-Et. No money, no boys. Now, not so sure.

I believe that a Well Managed gay bar could do well in Ubon area. This bar had music too loud, rates that were strange, and didn't have normal drinks available. The mix of boys was quite good, and I don't know about the cost to keep authorities off your back, but there were always a few customers in the bar, and they didn't advertise at all.

Many of ...most..of the customers were Thai, but with the right management and some good advertising, I believe that a bar in this area could show a reasonable profit, and provide a fun time in this area.
