Guest NCBored Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I'm considering buying a tablet - tho ' why', beyond 'I Want one!' is still a question to be answered. If you use (or have used) a tablet, what do you use it for? Any recommendations or advice? And if you're an iPad user - does the lack of Flash support impact you? (Let's be honest - I surely will want to watch porn sites on it!) TIA. Quote
Guest hitoallusa Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 You will have no problem watching porn. Quote
Guest EXPAT Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Almost all sites use HTML5 now instead of flash so I can watch almost everything on my iPhone. So you'll have no issue on the iPad. Flash is nearly dead. The main reason I haven't gone the iPad route has more to do with how sime websites force you to view their mobile versions on iPads and most of the features are stripped away on the mobile versions. I hate that. Some let you view the full site but some don't. I'm assuming this will improve over time but for now its annoying. Quote
Guest josephga Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I don't use either I have a iphone and few weeks ago bought a brand new desktop. Quote
Guest CharliePS Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 I have made no secret here of my general technophobia. I have an old no-name desktop and a cheap cellphone that I turn on only to make or take emergency calls, or when I am travelling. I prefer to read real books and newspapers, listen to music on my Bose CD player, go to a movie theater to watch movies, and watch tv programs on my tv set. However, 6 weeks ago I bought an iPad. I did it because I am going to be away from home for a month this summer, and I decided I ought to have some way to get on the Internet to do emails, monitor bank accts., maybe even look at a couple of favorite sites from time to time. I had to take a basic course in how to use it, and although I have become a bit more familiar with it, so far I haven't used it for anything except emails and checking the news, because it is faster than turning on my computer for that. In other words, it is simply an expensive toy which I play with now and then, but I hope it will prove useful when I am away away later this summer--if I can remember how to use it. Quote
Guest FourAces Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 NC - First you need to determine why you want a tablet. That will go a long way in making the correct decision. If an iPad ends up being the right choice I would wait as the refresh is probably 2 months away max. If you are looking for a device for consumption and not production tablets are awesome. They are easy to travel with and offer a simple user interface. All have wifi and you can buy many that offer cell connection as well, though that can get expensive. The iPad is the leader and for good reason ... apps! It all about the ecosystem and if you use iPhone or iMac or iTunes you probably want to consider the iPad. Note the lack of flash can be annoying once in a while and not all video is HTML 5 yet however the infrequent bumps shouldn't be a problem for the average user. There are two or three alternatives that I like to the iPad. Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Get a Amazon prime subscription and go crazy watching thousands of movies, TV shows and reading a endless supply of books. Not all but many are free. It has a nice interface and will keep you updated with news, email and weather. Google Nexus 7 Quad core beautiful display and everything google. Order up netflix kick back and enjoy. Or on the road use Google's maps. Samsung Galaxy 8 of all the models this one just came out ... has all the bells and whistles of the others plus uses s-pen and loaded with galaxy features found on their popular smartphone. Quote
Members msclelovr Posted July 4, 2013 Members Posted July 4, 2013 I'm an Apple fan and I'm on my second iPad; I feel it's a great device/toy. The one drawback to it is that, since I bought my first iPad, I have not used my MacBook at all. One tip: if you travel with your iPad, buy an anonymous-looking case and an external battery, such as made by Morphie. (Both are sold in Apple stores) Once you enjoy and rely on your iPad, nothing will annoy you more than running out of power while travelling. Quote
Guest EXPAT Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 I started with a Kindle Fire because Amazon offered it for almost nothing to me. So I thought I would try it since at that price it was disposable. I'm finding that I like it but it has major limitations versus an iPad. I have also tried several of the android apps which you can download and use on a Kindle Fire. And I will tell you that the Android apps are FAR INFERIOR to the Apple Apps. They clearly do not have the same coding scrutiny that the Apple apps have. Many of them are buggy and they crash more frequently and are less user friendly than their Apple App counterparts. So I would also strongly recommend the iPad if only for the app quality. Quote
Guest NCBored Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Thanks to everyone for the comments - and keep 'em coming! I've been doing my homework, and almost everyone agrees that the iPad is the best tablet, but I'm balking at the price, to be honest. For me, it would likely be an expensive toy. Since I'm currently caregiver to my father in my home, I no longer travel. I have a large, robust laptop as my primary machine, but I am interested in something easier to handle, and I would like to explore the technology of mobile devices. (I have not yet upgraded to a smartphone). FourAces - thanks for the comment about waiting for the next version iPad. I'll look into that. I remember seeing some comments that the last refresh was much of a change, but I wonder if they lower the prices on older models. Again - further comments are welcome, and thanks! Quote
Guest FourAces Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 NC the answer is yes. You can buy a refurbished iPad at the Apple Store or online at apple.com/store Apple replaces the case and battery, makes sure all is working, and offers a limited warranty as well. I cannot stress enough if you go this route only get it from Apple as other 3rd party refurbished iPads are not up to standards ... there are some very bad stories out there. I do agree with EXPAT that generally speaking Apple has better scrutiny over apps than Android does. However, that has been changing and to be honest unless you are into some pie in the sky type app any you select on a Android tablet will work just as well these days as they do on Apple products. I do wanna say with all respect it doesn't sound as if you really need tablet. If you use your laptop for watching movies or playing games, email and forums ( ) that should serve you well. Yes a tablet at its size and weight is awesome to carry around and travel with but it doesn't seem it would fit your needs. Maybe you should consider a smartphone instead. Common screen size is about 4.5" and many can do everything a tablet can. Quote
Members JKane Posted July 10, 2013 Members Posted July 10, 2013 Dell has a really interesting cross between a tablet and All-In-One that I'm interested in. When it gets the new Haswell chip and therefor better battery life I may well buy one. But it does a lot more than a regular tablet--full Windows machine. Quote

Except you're stuck with a Microsoft operating system. I'd rather use stone and a chisel. Quote
