Guest FourAces Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Its about time this woman faced consequences. I am sure we all know about her hidden diabetes diagnosis while she continued to pretend like butter and sugar were great foods for us all .... well until she signed a contract with a pharmaceutical company and finally did an about face. Now its racial slurs. She's such a lovable Southern Bell ----- Paula Deen, the self-proclaimed queen of Southern cooking and a sugary mainstay of the Food Network, was dropped by the network on Friday, following a bewildering day in which she failed to show up for an interview on the “Today” show and then in two online videos begged her family and audience for forgiveness for using racist language. The rest of the article is here ... In case you do not get a chance to read the entire article here are two lines she has been quoted as saying: She also stated that “most jokes” are about Jews, gay people, black people and “rednecks.” “I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person,” she said. Members RA1 Posted June 21, 2013 Members Posted June 21, 2013 I wondered about this gal from the first time I saw her on TV a few years ago. She seemed, among other things, just too "local" to me. Then, when a casino nearby signed a contract for her food to be featured in their buffet restaurant, I sort of "had" to try it out. What I "discovered" was she used a "secret" ingredient in a LOT of her food and I was unable to abide eating it. Therefore I do not chastise her for using rude and racial remarks ( bad enough) but I do so for featuring food NOT Southern and "bad" for everyone. We all can make mistakes and use language inappropriate or that we actually do not mean but few of us can build a "career" upon something in totality very seriously notionally inept. Best regards, RA1 Quote
AdamSmith Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 What mean you "secret"? Something identifiable and ersatz (MSG, say?), or otherwise? Afire with curiosity! I wholly agree her food ideas are abominable, lacking not only regional authenticity but in fact any merit as "cuisine" of any kind. Quote
Members RA1 Posted June 21, 2013 Members Posted June 21, 2013 It was a few years ago but I am pretty sure the front counter at the buffet was selling various spices she used. I may have known what it was then but I have forgotten now (somewhat on purpose). The flavor was identifiable in "everything" from the shrimp sauce to mashed potatoes to roast beef, etc. It was somewhat subtle but, in aggregate, eventually overwhelming, at least to me. It was pretty unreal how it took what I consider to be ordinarily good food and turned it not nasty but undesirable. Best regards, RA1 Quote
AdamSmith Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I think I get that. Long ago I tried a few different "branded" spice mixes -- meat rubs from Whole Foods, and similar stuff I can't now recall. They all to my taste emphasized some one thing or another to an exaggerated degree, just as pre-seasoned meat cuts (yuck) do to a much worse extent. Quote
AdamSmith Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 P.S. Just came to me the comparison I had been groping to recall: that Justin Wilson, the Cajun Chef, managed to make a genial joke of his "cooking" ability at the same time as doing a good if homely job of showing his audience at least the outlines of an actual regional cuisine. In both respects, a lot more appealing character to me than Paula has ever been. http://www.justinwilson.com/ ...I must consult my shrink on why I dislike La Deen so much. My own copy of White Trash Cooking having more truth in it than her little finger... (Now don't ask how her little finger got in there!) Quote
Members RA1 Posted June 22, 2013 Members Posted June 22, 2013 Maybe her rotten, two spoiled sons have off put you on her as well. "Fame" only goes so far. At some point one has to actually do something aka produce. Best regards, RA1 AdamSmith 1 Quote

Members boiworship Posted June 22, 2013 Members Posted June 22, 2013 Not watching tv has a small price--I never know who these people are! I do notice that when some celebrity makes a prejudiced comment, no amount of groveling absolves them. I suspect her disappearance from the airwaves will not cause undue hardship for viewers of these shows <sarcasm> Quote

Guest NCBored Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 It's interesting to read the transcript of the deposition that led to all this - the racism discussion starts around page 20. I think she's more naïve than evil. I'm not sure how many of us can claim we've NEVER used ANY racial or ethnic epithet, even in relating a joke? Quote
Members RA1 Posted June 23, 2013 Members Posted June 23, 2013 I cannot make such a claim. But, I have tried very hard to be circumspect in this regard for many years now. I may not always succeed but I do try. No one alive is perfect and what may have happened many years ago should be taken with a grain of salt, at least. I do not blame MS. Deen for making remarks. I do blame her for atrocious recipes and "hiding her diabetes" from her loyal and not so loyal public. I hope I am never in such as situation but that is very unlikely. I do not appear on TV. And, hope I never do. Best regards, RA1 JKane 1 Quote
AdamSmith Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Paula Deen Scandal Continues As Employees Tell Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Of Alleged DiscriminationThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution | By Fran Jeffries and Wayne Washington Posted: 06/23/2013 1:18 am EDT | Updated: 06/24/2013 8:30 pm EDT An attorney for the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition said current and former Paula Deen employees told him the famous cook and her brother discriminated against black employees, one of whom was consistently referred to as "my little monkey." After Deen acknowledged using a racial slur, the story went viral and the Food Network announced on Friday that it would not renew her contract when it expires at the end of June. Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, are being sued by Lisa T. Jackson, a former employee who claims she endured a hostile work environment replete with racial slurs. Robert Patillo, an attorney for Rainbow/PUSH, a civil rights group founded by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jr., said one current and two former employees told him white employees are routinely paid more than black employees and are promoted more quickly. A black man who had threatened to go to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Deen's brother told him "you don't have any civil rights here," Rainbow/PUSH said in a press release. Rainbow/PUSH said it has "found evidence of systemic racial discimination and harassment" by Deen and that "a family member consistently referred to a black cook as 'my little monkey.'" Patillo, who conducted interviews in Savannah where Deen's restaurant is located, said current and former employees told him that Deen "preferred white and light-skinned blacks to work with customers" and that darker-skinned blacks were relegated to "back-of-the-house operations." Patillo said employees have been reluctant to talk to him about their experience with Deen because they fear retaliation. Deen could not be reached on Saturday for comment on the Rainbow/PUSH allegations... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/23/paula-deen-scandal-continues-employees-tell-rainbow-push-alleged-discrimination_n_3484607.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular Quote

Guest josephga Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I don't think she should lose her job at the food network or her spoke persons job for that ham company over this. She isn't perfect. I don't get this thing about making a person go away at times when they say the wrong things... lucky for me over being self employed lol Quote
Members RA1 Posted June 25, 2013 Members Posted June 25, 2013 Joe- I agree about her not being censored over something that happened 25 years ago, but her hypocritical stance to continue selling fat and sugar when she was a diagnosed diabetic is something else. Most of us can eat anything but in moderation. Her recipes do not seem to promote moderation. Additionally, as mentioned before, I have tasted many of her recipes and have found them wanting. I agree that is a personal judgment. Hypocrisy overwhelms me. Best regards, RA1 Quote
Guest josephga Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 when it comes to her food I cooked a few of her recipes a few years back and too be honest I never got her appeal I thought it was horrible. Quote
