Hoover, not Herbert but J. Edgar, was apparently a learned disciple of the Dewey Decimal system. He had the largest collection of porn in existence at the time. Who knew? I think we know now that he was a homosexual although one with a unusual physc flaw or whatever. Regardless of any or all of that, he was a tyrant who was revered during his hey day. What does all that mean? History is busy re-writing all we know on a daily basis and he, as well as many others, will see what they deserve sooner or later.

Let's not see him so negatively. He did contribute. Here is my bull shit opinion about him. He created this image of strong intelligence. I'm not sure how strong it actually was or maybe it was not that strong. But he did contribute this appearance that the US will take counter measures against spies and communists. Creating an environment for them to fear and seed mistrust in their organizations was very important. Once trust is gone it is very easy to create a hole that could be manipulated for infiltration. I don't think nice guys like you and I can't do that but Hoover did a great job carrying out counter intelligence at his time.

Obviously you do not remember the loyalty oaths of the 1950's. I still remember my school teachers complaining about same. However, they signed them. Also a lot of propaganda about J. Edgar was sent to the schools to include movies showing him getting the "bad guys". There is no doubt those bad guys needed "getting" but now we realize how little he personally had to do with it. Virtually nothing.

I am in favor of the best aspects of his "image" but totally against the overwhelming reality of the person. Sorry.
