Under, "Restrictions on Your Work Permit," it says, "The work permit once approved allows you to work only at the noted company and location." (Nothing about in what capacity.)

On the other hand; under, "Getting the Work Permit Approved," it says, " A job description is often the determining factor in the approval or denial of a work permit. Unless the job description requires skills a Thai is not likely to posess, the application will not be approved."

Apparently, Thailand hasn't enough female impersonaters\drag queens, and\or drag is included in the (saloon manager\cat-house madam) job description.

Maybe it can be done if the venue itself specifies that what they need is a foreign drag queen or foreign musician, or whatever. I don't know if it can be done that way or not.

From what I understand, obtaining the work permit is not really all that difficult, but without one, you can't work, especially if you are in Thailand on a tourist visa, retirement visa, or something similar. It would require a change in the type of visa you might be holding and I have no idea how you would go about making any changes.

I can only repeat . . . that and all the other complicating factors is why I keep saying that you should check all this out with a Thai attorney. The last thing on earth I would do, if it were me, would be to rely solely upon guesses made on message boards.

The bottom line is so simple - if you don't have a work permit, then don't work.

That would be fine, except for one thing. The original poster is not trying to work in a school. He wants to tutor and work as a DJ.

"My best guess is that no more than half of the English teachers teaching Thailand have a work permit. In Bangkok the percentage would be much higher. Working without a work permit is pain, for many reasons. First of all, what you are doing is technically illegal, and while it is not likely, there is always a chance that you might get caught and charged with working illegally. In a worst-case scenario you would be fined, and deported from Thailand. It seldom happens, but it has happened. It should be noted that this sort of thing seems to happen to those who have enemies or who have fallen out with someone, so whatever you do, do not let people know that you are teaching without a work permit.

The work permit allows you to get a longer visa / visa extension. So, if the school that you are working for gets you a work permit then the work permit will allow you to get your visa extended, usually to the last day of your work permit, which is usually a year. So, you get a one year visa. If you stay with the same school and renew your work permit every year then your visa will also be extended every year."

NOTE:

All aliens engaged in any kind of work in Thailand must hold a valid work permit, issued principally by the Department of Employment of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare pursuant to the Alien Employment Act B.E. 2521 (A.D. 1978).

The term "work" is defined very broadly, covering both physical and mental activities, whether or not for wages or other remuneration. Working without a valid work permit even for a day is a criminal offense.

The validity period of a work permit is governed by the holder's immigration status, i.e. a work permit usually expires on the last day of the period of stay allowed by immigration officials as shown on the alien's visa. Aliens holding transit and tourist visas are not permitted to work.

A friend of mine was working illegally in Bangkok in a restaurant as a manager. He told me that it was ok as the group he worked for were paying someone to turn a bling eye. The person that was being paid was a regular visitor to the restaurant. One day that person wasn't arround any more and suddenly the illegals were all rounded up. The point is that it may be ok for a while but there are too many chances of it all going wrong. By the way he was only being paid 20,000 bt a month with food and board and he didn't need the money he only did it to keep himself from getting bored. well he is now bored back in the UK.

This brings up a good point and is very relevant to this thread. I also would like to know if such performers as Jim of Ambiance/Boyz, Boyz, Boyz or that big toothed guy over at La Cage have work permits to perform in all the shows they do.

The Rose

What has it got to do with you if Jim or any one else has a work permit, Why on earth would you be Interested, I find people like you are very dangerous and to be well avoided..... It is some one like you that tried to get Monty deported from the country and his imprisonment, if it was not for good friends who helped him prove his Innocents, he was set up and vindicated trying to say he was working and he was asleep at the time.

Very similar to the nosy parker old women who get no love at home, and is always interfering in other peoples business. Looking through the curtains, very dangerous in deed I think we will have to keep and eye on you and your posts in future.

If you were looking to get a work permit understandable your interested, but to worry about who has and who has not sound dubious to me.

I am not sure why you feel that anything said above is anything other than a natural question. Maybe those people within any industry could well say " Am I doing something illegal'?.

To me it is a fairly open question. I am really assuming that there is no need for you to make any comment about Monty, because I am sure that he can well and truly take care of himself.

A problem that you seem to have is that you are being taken over by 'Stalkers'.! Which I am sure is in your mind only. Maybe as someone said to me, you should 'chill out" and do a Smiles thing. That way you get the opportunity for a renewed onslaught later.

This may tell you that you dont have the supposed 'One stalker" but a number of people that disagree strongly with what you say andmindless info to be 'First cab off the rank"

Reflect on your life, before you give usual the barrage of abuse or you will always end up the 'village idiot'. Wit is one thing, honesty is another.

If you want to fan the flames of your critics go back through all the old threads, and find one on which the last post was several days ago, like this one, and post an incendiary response, even though you really have nothing to add to the topic, but just fancied some point scoring!
