TotallyOz Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 To sum it up: the new Iphone is Amazing in Thailand. Honestly, if you get it at Tuk com or another good place it has even more features than the unblocked phones do. My new Unblocked IPhone is amazing and I love it. With google maps in Thailand and e-mail and Internet and Wifi. But, they installed a program that allows for other downloads that I can't get on my ATT phone. The camera zooms in and out, it takes video, plays chess, etc. Leave it to the geeks in Thailand to outdo even Apple in what the IPhone is capable of! Amazing phone. Tuk Com. 23,000 baht Unblocked. 16G. 300 bath for all the additional programs. They will update it every time a new software version comes out. Easy to use and so far, I love it! Quote

Guest JoeM Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Stef, what most people in the US do not realize is that they can buy unlocked mobile phones that have not been crippled by the carrier (eg ATT, T-Mobile, etc.). I have been buying and using unlocked mobile phones for years. This gives me full functionality (lots of amazing programs and features), a phone that works everywhere (including Japan and Korea), and I am not locked into a long term contract with a carrier (can switch SIMS at will). BTW, you can buy an unlocked iPhone in the US for a bit less than in LOS. It can be tricked out just as much here as there. Quote

I ended up buying 2 Iphones.. one in the US an one for France.. that I can use it when I travel. I tried to unlock it the one I have for the US that I could use it in Europe .. but never succeeded with the Iphone.. I have used unlocked phone , smart phones most of the time and it always worked, but with the IPhone, I am just a little afraid to break the darn thing. I will give it a shot when I am there in Few months. Why not.. ? I love the IPHone and wouldn't go elsewhere for sure... Quote
Guest rainwalker Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 So tell me, is the iPhone in Thailand a gray market phone (ie imported from elsewhere) or is it an official iPhone authorized to be sold here? If gray market, what about the Apple warranty? And what about the reports that, when software is being updated from the official site, unauthorized phones are being disabled. BTW: As of today, the price is 22,500 baht at Tukcom with the extra software installed free. Quote
KhorTose Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Okay: 1. I buy an unlocked iphone here is the USA for $519 with 8 megs & gsm and take it to Thailand how do I get the Thai programs? 2. Can I get on the internet in Thailand using a 1,2 call sim card or do I have to buy a special card and service in Thailand? Quote

The warranty will not be good and you cannot update the software from Apple. You will have to go to TutCom to have it updated. They do this for 300 baht. The "unauthorized" versions do have more things than the registered ones have but you loose all warranty with that. I don't know about buying one in USA and then converting it over. I know they do that at Tutcom but don't know the price of that. The Internet did work for me and so does e-mail. I used it in Thailand, Brazil and USA with no problems each on different networks. I suggest the 16GB version if you want video and extra space. I have one 8GB and one 16GB and the 8GB is always full and I have to dump stuff. 2. I was able to get the Internet there with no problem. Same with e-mail. Quote
Guest richsilver Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I bought an iPhone at Tuk Com here in Pattaya a few weeks ago (8 GB, 18,000 baht). They put in my old AIS SIM and everything works just great! The visual voice mail is the only function you cannot use as far as I can tell. I had Thai fonts, Thai keyboard and Thai/English, English/Thai dictionary installed (300 baht). They all work just great. I also downloaded and have tried Fring, an application that lets you make Skype calls from the phone using Wi Fi. It’s a bit buggy, but it works. I have downloaded a few other applications and they work just fine. In short, I just love the phone and can recommend it to anyone. I do wish I had bought the 16 GB, however. Richard Quote
