Guest EXPAT Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Good news, everyone! Mississippi has finally gotten around to ratifying the 13th Amendment to the constitution, so slavery is officially abolished. They actually took the vote back in 1995 (still a little late), but the Secretary of State never sent the certification in to the federal government. Quote
Members RA1 Posted February 19, 2013 Members Posted February 19, 2013 As you know it was not necessary for MS or any of the other early decliners to ratify the amendment. It became the law of the land when 75% of the state legislations did so. Perhaps an interesting fact is that it would have taken fewer total "votes" in 1865 than it would today, simply because there were fewer states in 1865, only 36 I think. The 33 who ratified it immediately would not be 75% of the 50 states we have today. Maybe MS's vote does count for something. Best regards, RA1 Quote
