PJ's Guesthouse in Chiang Mai

First, there is simply no better place in all of Thailand then PJ’s Guest House if you are looking for a gay friendly B and B. Two men who are lovers run it and their staff is excellent in what they do and the place is simply wonderful. PJ’s has high speed Internet for all guests. They serve a daily free breakfast from 8-10. The breakfast is a mixture of options and the boy that wait the tables are dressed in traditional Thai attire and the place settings are done to perfection each day. The boys are friendly, always have a smile on their faces and very easy to look at every day.

The owners are Peter and Jaib. They run the place and oversee the guest’s stay. They are always available for comment and assistance. They gave so much advice and went the extra mile to make sure that the boyfriend and I had a great trip.

We choose to stay in one of the suites, which is actually a small bungalow by itself. There was a bathroom and living room / office area on the first floor and a bedroom and bath on the second floor. Both floors had air conditioners and were sunny and great views of the gardens.

The gardens were beautiful and well maintained. They had amazing blooms from the plants there and the sound of the water in the waterfalls were very soothing and relaxing.

PJ’s had a guy for massage that would come to the hotel. He was excellent in Thai Massage and it was great not to have to leave the hotel. The cost for 2 hours was 600 baht. I thought this was an excellent rate and well worth it for the comfort of my own room. This was not a sex massage but it was an excellent relaxation.

The only drawback to PJ’s was the Internet. It was fine for checking e-mail and cruising the web. It was very slow during the day and at night got faster.

The only thing I would change if I were the owner is that I would make sure long stay customers got breakfast in bed by one of the cute waiters. This would have made me stay another month. Just kidding on this one although I would not have complained if any of their boys served me breakfast in bed. All 3 guys were hot and beautiful smiles and personalities. I think PJ”s picked the cream of Chiang Mai to be staff. I had trouble finding anyone in the city as hot as the tall hunk of a boy that works at PJ’s. And, yes, I did proposition him but was turned flat down.

Over the course of 4 weeks at PJ’s place, I met some great guest who I enjoyed chatting with and got to know a few of them socially at night. It was a nice change of pace to meet guys that were more well rounded than the chaps I met in Pattaya who only cared about the newest bar or the next boy. The guests at PJ’s were from all over the world but the ones I spent time with were from Australia, Germany and England.

I cannot recommend PJ’s enough for anyone. It is a great place to stay and an excellent value for the money.

I couldn't agree more, GT. PJ's is an excellent choice. And I do understand your quote {above}. Same same for me. Chiang Mai has so very much to offer, and in such a varied sort of way. Having seen it marginalized by some posters, I appreciate so much seeing your positive words for a Thailand gem. Thanks.

Quite believe everything written about the place! Unfortunately I have been unsuccessful in the five times I have tried to make a reservation with 'no vacancies' being the reply each time even though, on the last two occasions, I tried to book 8 or 9 months in advance for periods which were NOT in the high season.

Well, I saw periods of time when I was there in February that had full nights. Some nights had only one or two rooms vacant but many nights they were full. Most of the guys I met there had stayed there in the past and will stay on their next trip. I can see why the place is hard to book as it really is the best that gay Thailand has to offer. I know for Songran weekend, they are either booked or almost booked. Sorry you were not successful Buaseng. I hope you try again and see. I know they are considering expanding a bit. Currently, they only have 4 rooms and 2 suites and I am sure when they add more rooms, they will keep the place busy as well. The reason is that they really are excellent at what they do.

I've given up! Getting knocked back twice when trying to book 9 months in advance for dates right in the middle of the low season is more than enough.

There's just no incentive to try again having experienced the booking rejections outlined above.

Just thought I would inject a note of caution and reality with my post for anyone else thinking of booking for the first time as a result of your recommendation and expecting to be successful - the odds seems to be very much against it.

While I do understand your feelings, you really shouldn't be angry that a place is booked so far in advance with some of their dates. That just tells you how good your stay would be if you get it when you make the reservations.

I have stayed in a few other hotels in Chiang Mai over the years and will try to round up my old notes for you. There is one place directly next to Central Shopping that seemed nice and centrally located. I think the name of it was Lotus but I'll try to find out for you.

Have you made other plans yet for your next trip? Are you looking for gay hotel or does that matter to you? I know that you will have a blast in Chiang Mai. If you have any questions that are private, feel free to e-mail me at: gaythailand@gmail.com and I will assist in any way I can.

I'm not angry just frustrated and disappointed at not being able to get a reservation!

Thanks. I have stayed at the Santitham Guest house once - (not bad) and the Vista Hotel (within the walled old city) twice - (very nice but a bit awkward to get to) and a couple of hotels in the Night bazaar area. Therefore, have plenty of options to choose from.

I know that you will have a blast in Chiang Mai.

I really like the place and the surrounding area and usually try to make a trip there at least once every couple of years. Been there five times so far. The only real drawback to the place is that the gay areas are not centralised otherwise there is so much to see and do in and around the city and province (makes a nice change from vegetating on the beach at Jomtien!). As you say, one can have a blast there.

Having discovered PJ's Place a couple of years ago, I see that in five visits since November 2007 I've spent 47 nights there. I can only confirm what others have said about the hospitality of Peter and Jiab, the friendliness of the staff and the excellence of the accommodation.

It really is worth persisting in trying to get a reservation, you won't regret it.

I have just returned to Bangkok after a wonderful 7 nights in Chiang Mai at PJ's.

I booked on March 5 for an arrival on March 25. i was the only customer there the first night.

I chose the location based solely on this thread. I could not have been happier. I seldom have the opportunity to leave Bangkok due to my 6 day a week (3 jobs) work schedule so my purpose was simply to relax.

The room and garden was simply wonderful.

In discussions with Peter on the problems of booking....I discovered flexibility is key. There are only 6 rooms (4 rooms and 2 suites). If there are bookings for Monday to Thursday, and you want to stay Wednesday to Sunday, then you would be out of luck. Your best bet is to remain flexible. If they cannot accommodate you, then ask when the next vacancy is or how you can adjust your stay.
