Guest BudFoxx Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Since the only three categories under the "Arts" forums are for: 1) Theater, Art and literature 2) Gay movies and Gay themed films 3) Coming of age films I was unsure where to post about just a mainstream themed film like this. I chose this forum as it seemed the most appropriate for this film, although it doesnt really fit the criteria here either, by forum definition. The only other two choices were about gay movies, films and coming of age films, which didnt apply either. My apologies for placing this here if offensive to anyone. I viewed this film last night which I had recorded on my dvr a few months ago. I knew its subject-matter ahead of time and believed it was a delicate dance between reality and comedy. I never really appreciated Joseph-Gordon-Levitt until this film, although his hosting on SNL a few months ago got my attention from his opening of the show through the numerous skits he was in. 50/50 was a very good film for me. It portrayed so many real things in life when bad news comes knocking at your door. How people dont or cant change in the face of the potential life-taking disease of another. I laughed, I cried, I related and then at one point I had to click on the info button on the remote twice to reveal the cast (while the film was playing) to reveal that it was indeed Anjelica Huston who was playing Adams mother. God that woman has screen presence no matter what she is doing. I loved this film because it felt real. It was about family, denial, silent suffering, friendships, relationships and many of the things which go so dysfunctional when people get sick even if they werent dysfunctional before. One of the most poignant take-a-ways I have of this film is how Joseph-Gordon-Levitt was capable of expressing emotion thru facial expressions alone throughout this film. That truly, for an actor, is a gift. When you can convey what is in your heart or in/on your mind, with simply a look on your face, we should all be so gifted. Perhaps we actually already are and don't just see it. I embrace this film with four hearts out of five. Quote
Guest BudFoxx Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Please note I originally posted this in the theater, Arts and Literature forum, as my post had suggested out of respect for forums available. This review is not about gay themed movies or video. Perhaps a broader definition of film in general would be cool. Quote
Guest hitoallusa Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Great introduction to a movie I have not seen.. Thank you. I'm adding it to my list to watch.. Quote
Members Lucky Posted January 23, 2013 Members Posted January 23, 2013 I would hate to think that anyone would be offended if a post ended up in a forum where it might not fit best. That would be taking things a bit far. What I welcome is the information in the post. For me, the Arts forum should be about art, but the definition varies as we well know. So as long as the post shows a general respect for the intent of the forum, I would prefer to see it posted rather than not. Quote
Guest lurkerspeaks Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I agree completely with Budfoxx for his review of 50/50. It was a very good movie which really shows the acting ability of JGL.. To see an earlier, and IMHO equally good movie with JGL that DOES fit in the "gay" movie segment, check out Mysterious Skin.. Quote

That would be taking things a bit far. I am not offended Lucky. However, Director, Jonathan Levine and Writer, Will Reiser might be less than happy that a review of their film is rendered to a Gay Movies and Gay Themed Films forum. My point was that there is no category here to review mainstream films. Under these guidelines, a review of "The Help" or "Argo" or "Lincoln" would be required to be placed under Gay Movies and Gay Themed Films. For me, that would be taking things a bit far. Quote
Members Lucky Posted January 24, 2013 Members Posted January 24, 2013 I would support a forum for art movies that are not gay related. Quote
Guest NCBored Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 I would support a forum for art movies that are not gay related. As would I. I also saw 50/50 whne it was first released and thought it was a good movie. Quote
