Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards were announced this morning by the show’s host, Seth MacFarlane, and actress Emma Stone on Thursday, January 10. This was the first time since 1972 that an Oscar show host has participated in the nominations announcement. The nominations were unveiled at a news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, where hundreds of media representatives from around the world will be gathered. Since the first nominations announcement in 1964, the Academy president has been joined by one or more co-announcers at the event. This year the Academy will break with tradition when MacFarlane, the Ted star and filmmaker who was named Oscar show host in October, joins Stone on Oscar nominations morning. (Charlton Heston in 1972 was the only other show host to participate in the nominations announcement.) Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24th at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. Only 3 films scored Picture + Director + Editing + Screenplay: Lincoln, Life Of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook.

Some initial comments: Lincoln leads with 12 nominations. The snub of the year is Kathryn Bigelow's absence from the directing category, since Zero Dark Thirty is the year's most adored film. Also I'm very surprised that Ben Affleck was not nominated for "Argo" as Best Director. Tarantino wasn't nominated either for Django Unchanged. I hated that movie, so his snub is a win for me. Silver Linings Playbook managed a nomination in every acting category, and that means even Jacki Weaver, who played a mostly insignificant mother role in the movie, garnered a nom. Still, love her. The animated film category is adorable. Amour's Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest Best Actress nominee ever at age 85, while Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis is the youngest at age 9. She was born the week I hooked up with a dude for the first time. Wow.

And hooray: Amour scored a Best Picture nomination! A full list of nominees that weren't announced at the excruciatingly "jokey" ceremony by presenters Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone can be found here. (Look out for Best Documentary Feature nominee How to Survive a Plague about the early years of the AIDS crisis.)

If the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2013 really are a sign of what we have to expect at the 85th Academy Awards, then the Oscar winners are going to be split between every deserving film and performance to be nominated this year. While "Silver Linings Playbook" won the most awards with Best Comedy Movie, Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Best Ensemble, all other major awards were split between "Argo," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty."

Of course, there's no good way to judge who will win Best Director as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't nominate CCAs winner Ben Affleck for the award. It should help that the film also took home Best Picture, which bodes well for its Oscar chances. It's still a toss-up to see who will take home which awards on Feb. 24, but for now things are looking good for "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Argo," and not so great for "Life of Pi." Sorry, Ang Lee.
