TotallyOz Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 I brought my IPhone to Thailand and it works fine for me. But, now the boyfriend wants one. I tried to explain to him that many if not most of the features won't work here. I just assume this is correct. Is there a legit version of this in Thailand? Has anyone used one here on a Thai network? I have been using mine only for important calls to USA as the rates are not cheap. I also made sure I turned off my mail as that is data and I had a friend that had over 1k in charges when he was in Asia. I have seen the Iphones in the IT places in Thailand so I know an unblocked version is available. I am curious if anyone has a legit one that is of use in Thailand. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 I have seen the Iphones in the IT places in Thailand I have seen a couple of people who looked Thai using the iPhone in Bangkok. But I thought it is not available for sale here yet. Are you sure it was not the iPod Touch you saw in the stores? That has been available for a few months and looks identical to the iPhone. Quote
Guest wowpow Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 There are supposed to be 60,000 iPhones in Thailand and many shops in Tuk.com and Panthip have them. There is a shop at the end of Pattayaland Soi 3 which has them at 22,000 baht and will unlock them for use on a Thai network. You can take the phone back to get updates. The last I heard Apple were talking to AIS Thailand about selling their phones with a contract. I have no idea why Mr Jobs likes to be so restrictive and expensive. His 'revolutionary' phone has only sold about 4 million worldwide which is peanuts in the mobile market. I dislike such restrictive practices and in certain EU countries such arrangements are illegal. If you want a "legit" one then you will have to wait a while. Quote
Guest wowpow Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 "No, Wow Pow, it wasn't an Iphone. The boyfriend is working hard on that one. It seems like I hear about it at least once a day. Persistence is the key with me and even though I have spent tons on him shopping and he has a high end phone, he still keeps drumming the IPhone in my ears. I am almost certain it will not work. Especially since he saw what I paid last night, he knows that I am open to the possibility. I really don't mind the price of the IPhone as when I asked in Bangkok at MBK, it was about 25k baht. I just don't think spending that and not being able to use the features is not such a great idea. I am sure the new Nokia would be a better choice. He knows he will get a new phone before this trip ends and I really should just leave it up to him to choose but I think he would get more use of the Nokia than the other phone if the service for the phone is not going to be good." Guest buckeroo2 Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 I was at a phone shop at Tuk.com chatting with the Thai owner when a farang stopped and asked about the IPhone he had in his display case. The shop owner told that customer that the Iphone was pirated and not authorized but if the customer bought it , he would make all of its feautures available - don't know how and did not pay attention to the price. Guest Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 I was at a phone shop at Tuk.com chatting with the Thai owner when a farang stopped and asked about the IPhone he had in his display case. I checked with several phone places today and they all have it for sale for 22k bath or about 1k more. They all did say not all the features worked and there were no guarantees. That is the part that worries me. I am sure since these guys seem to be able to copy everything that there is a full system in place for this phone. I just have to see a bit more on it before making such a leap of faith. Quote
