High School and College Reunions

Recommended Posts

I get invited back every year to a high school reunion. I have never been. I was thinking about that tonight as I watched the Glee show. I have never even been back to my high school since I graduated. I do have friends from those days but the memories are not ones that I care to revisit so each year, I just never show up and never go. Everyone says they would love to see me. But, what do I even have in common with them now?

Do you return for your reunions? Do you keep in touch with friends from yesteryear?

There were 44 in my class, so we knew each other well. Since I came out, only one of them ever contacted me again, and that was to get me to come to a reunion. I didn't go.

If you could arrive at the reunion banquet with both the BF's in tow, no doubt yall would be the talk of the town for decades, Oz!

Wonder how hard it would be to get them a couple of tourist visas?

I've never missed a 5 yr high school reunion. I love renewing old friendships. With a graduating class of 50 (and being together all the time in boarding school) you really know everyone. I enjoy 5 year college reunions too and have been to a few of those.

My problem with these reunions is that almost everyone is trying to impress the others as to how well they have done. Some even go as far as renting an expensive car........... I haven't time for that kind of BS especially since I would have to fly 3000 miles to attend.

I have not been to any of my school reunions and have not received an invite in a few decades. I have no interest in reliving the past with people trying to measure themselves to me. These are not people who have been friends throughout my life they are people who I played with or hung out for a few years with as a kid .. ok and sucked a few off :P But in all seriousness I don't wanna be the topic of tomorrows dinner conversation let them come up with their own thoughts.

On a side note I recently became in contact with someone from my early days just out of school. We had a awesome conversation and never once was I asked am I married what do I do for a living how much do you weigh now or like questions. He is someone I consider a past friend and hope to meet up in person again.

OZ I find when you start hearing everyone would like to see you that is code for they wanna know if u are bald or fat or gay or rich or broke or ... it has little to do with spending time with you but to judge you. I know that s pretty cynical but it has been my experience in life.

They all know what I look like because of Facebook. I am also pretty out being gay as I post photos of the BF all the time. They see him, they know him. I have taken my NYC BF's home for Xmas for near 18 years so I know they know I am gay.

They also know I am into Pornography and once owned an escort agency. I decided long ago when I got into the business, no one would be able to blackmail me so I just told all. Perhaps the wrong move back then, but it was the decision I made.

I think the invitations have more to do with them not going outside our hometown ever. Many of my classmates have not traveled outside the south and few if any outside the USA. They do look at me as an oddity and most likely pray for my soul, but they love hearing stories of my travels and where I have been.

That said, I have only remained in touch with a few "band" members that I was friends with back in the days. The rest I avoid and when I visit my home, I never look anyone up other than family. Like many have said, it was a lifetime ago and I have little in common with them. But, I do love to poke at a few of them and thought about showing up with a few cute twinks around my arms just to get the rumor mills going. ^_^

Well if you live in my neighborhood in NC then all the widows will gossip about you and complain that a gay guy is living nearby... If a guy visit me then they peek through their windows and call each other on the phone. I could see them standing there in front of the window with their phone talking to someone.. Yikes..

I actually wrote a very funny blog about this once but I won't bore all of you with the contents of that.

My answers though to your questions are: No, NO! and Hell NO! I was mercilessly bullied when I was in High School non-stop. Actually I was quite short (around 5'4") in High School and after I got out of High School, I grew to over 6'. I still think it was the excessive stress that kept me so short.

Most of middle school and High school were a painful blur to me. There were these kids on the bus that always punched, teased or tormented me the best way they knew how. Then there were the people at High School who kept insisting that I was gay (actually I was sexually ambivalent at the time and denied that I was gay). But it didn't matter because the bullies would still corner me and slug me while spreading the rumor. They did it to the point that one of my High School science teachers said I could talk to him if I had any issues...and I politely told him that I...WAS...NOT...GAY! and to stop listening to the rumors!

Anyway most of my time there was spent hiding. I would never go to the lunch room for lunch. I started by going to the library. Then my electronics teacher said I could stay in the classroom during lunch one year. One year, electronics was cancelled (low attendance) and I would wait in the hallway outside of the lunchroom waiting to be released back to class. I would never eat at school however.

I always remember how this one "jock" sat next to me during graduation. As they were talking, he leaned over and said, "You know why we pick on you, don't you David?" and I said, "Why?" and he said, "Because we like you." It was his attempt to say "Hey, I'm sorry for everybody being a jerk for the past several years but we're more mature now and we probably won't ever see you again so I might as well apologize."

I've had a few of my friends try to contact me. I haven't contacted any of them back. I was friends with one for a bit on Facebook. I saw a guy that I barely knew at a local Kroger store while I was doing a Western Union. He said, "Hey, I thought you looked familiar. I went to school with you! Remember me..I'm xxxxx "? to which I responded with disgust, "No and I hated school" to which he quietly went back to doing his job.

I still get notices for the reunions. All I can think of is how mentally unstable I'd really have to be to want to SEE the people that tormented me for all those many years. "Oh hey...I know you..I tried shoving you in your locker. You were tough." I don't expect any sympathy from these cretins who knew me long ago but I also do not want any more contact with them. I don't secretly desire to go back and make fun of them or what they've done with their life. But...and I mean this from the very bottom of my heart...

I would never go to a class reunion EVER no matter what the circumstances might be

I have no patience nor time for the idiots of yesteryear.
