Save those dollar bills! The city of West Hollywood will join local businesses to celebrate the Second

Annual Go-Go Dancer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Oct. 27. An amateur go-go dance competition will be staged on Larrabee Street from 6 p.m. to midnight. Citywide special events will also be held along the Sunset Strip.

The Sunset Strip gave birth to go-go dancing in the mid-’60s and ‘70s, thanks to the Whisky A GoGo and other clubs along the strip. In 1968, the newly formed Advocate magazine held its first Groovy Guy dance contest as a way to unite the L.A. gay community. The contest ran in one form or another through 1991. In September 2011, the West Hollywood CityCouncil approved Go-Go Dancer Appreciation Day—an event that celebrates WeHo’s edginess and promotes the city as a primary gay destination.

Frontiers is also in on the fun with the launch of our Second Annual Go-Go Dancer Competition, presented by Gold’s Gym. Visit FrontiersLA.com/GoGo, where readers can vote for their favorite L.A.-based go-go dancer. Fourteen guys will compete, but only seven will move on to perform at the go-go fest (users must register online and can only cast one vote per day). Judges and a live audience will choose the winner. The last go-go dancer standing wins a trip to Palm Springs and a chance to grace the magazine’s cover. Frontiers will also host an official afterparty at Micky’s at 10:30 p.m.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation will be at the venue conducting free one-minute HIV testing in the

organization’s mobile clinic. Individuals who get tested will be eligible to win free tickets to LASC’s Halloween rooftop party, sponsored by AHF Pharmacies. Contact Frontiers Advertising Director Vic Gerami at (323) 930-3220 or vic.gerami@frontiersLA.com for more on our Go-Go Dancer Competition.
