AdamSmith Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I despise it almost as much as TV, but I do use it regularly: Facebook looks to have crashed. Can't log in thru any of my browsers. All other Web services are working, so not a local issue. Anybody else seeing this? ...After their IPO debacle, this is the last thing they need. Quote
Guest lurkerspeaks Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 must have been a short lived glitch-it's working fine for me.. Quote
Guest EXPAT Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 it's working fine for me as well as of 7AM PDT Sunday. Quote
AdamSmith Posted September 16, 2012 Author Posted September 16, 2012 Yeah, about 10 minutes after my 8:09 am EDT post, FB became accessible to me again. The apparent outage did, though, make me realize I had drifted into treating it a bit as an archival tool for photos, and that this is maybe Not A Good Idea. Quote

I tend to agree. Especially using the old BookFace to archive anything - Google, Facebook and many others in their Terms of Service state they either own or control photos and posts - sorta like MER owns this post - and I don't want my photos (not a single pornographic in the least) owned by anyone but me PERIOD! AdamSmith Posted September 16, 2012 Author Posted September 16, 2012 Yeah, Zuckerberg's claim of copyright on all our wit, wisdom & images posted there galls. Even tho what can you do other than avoid the thing. Although didn't he get challenged on that by some European government(s)? Anyone know if I'm recalling right, and if so, how it came out? (I have no objection of course to the fine gents who run this estimable site claiming whatever they want. As my ceaseless babbling makes obvious! Contributing what wit, charm & dirty pics we can muster is the least we can do in thanks for all the resources provided here at free levels of membership.) Quote
Guest gcursor Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I was made aware of this once CNN posted that the United States DEFCON level went to DEFCON 2. The story went on to say that all USA bombers were scrambled to be on high alert and the borders to the United States were being closed. Further it stated that all people would be directed to shelters to weather the impending threat. Also Emergency Broadcast Systems kicked in stating details on where we go for information and assistance with food and supplies. imagine what would happen if TWITTER went down! gcursor Quote
AdamSmith Posted September 17, 2012 Author Posted September 17, 2012 imagine what would happen if TWITTER went down! gcursor LOL For one thing, we might be able to hear ourselves think again. Back in 1945, Gertrude Stein already felt driven to remark, "People get so much information all day long that they've lost their common sense." Imagine what she might say today. Quote
Members lookin Posted September 17, 2012 Members Posted September 17, 2012 Imagine what she might say today. There ain't no answer. There ain't gonna be any answer. There never has been an answer. That's the answer. Personally, I don't agree with the above sentiment, anyway not enough to stop at least looking for the answer. I may not find it, but I sure intend to keep looking for it. But the quote itself is delightful. As are all of her others, if you ask me. The one that really resonates for me right now is: It is funny that men who are supposed to be scientific cannot get themselves to realise the basic principle of physics, that action and reaction are equal and opposite, that when you persecute people you always rouse them to be strong and stronger. Thanks for showing us the Stein way AdamSmith! Quote
Guest hitoallusa Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 It is true that how we process enormous raw data is a big issue these days... Quote
Guest gcursor Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I agree about the processing of information we do on a daily basis. A few weeks back, we had to keep a media log of the time/stuff that we did for a whole week. It is surprising to see how many hours upon hours upon hours upon hours we fritter away on things like tv and videogames and whatever else. Some years back when I lived in an apartment, I stopped paying for cable and never turned my tv on for about a year or so. I learned that you never really miss it when it's not there. I actually started going out to the bar or working at work (not necessarily a good thing). But the point is is that I found something to occupy my time instead of wasting all that time on mindless entertainment all the time. Quote
Guest hitoallusa Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Good for you Gcursor... Which bar do you go to? Look for a guy with glass slippers on... I have to be home by midnight so be there early... Quote
Members MsGuy Posted September 17, 2012 Members Posted September 17, 2012 ...when you persecute people you always rouse them to be strong and stronger. Beg to disagree. Sometimes you just make them dead. Not too many Abigensians (Cathars) , strong or otherwise, to be found now-a-days, outside their mass graves. Quote

Couple years ago I just found my interest in TV had gone out the window. That left a lot more time for clubbing, drinking and chasing dick. Now, straightening up a little, no TV = a lot more time for work, domesticity, posting here , and occasionally glancing at a book. Either way, just as you describe, I miss it not at all. The time I now fritter away on YouTube is still gnat-like compared with the hours I used to give to the beast. Quote
