Guest stef Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Any advice on buying a a phone SIM card for use within Thailand? Thanks I always use Orange Sim card but I have been told it is the most expensive in Thailand. Didn't think it was. But Never had a problems with connection whatsoever. Been using Orange network in Europe and in Asia pretty often. I know most of my friends use the cheap sim card... 12Go or something... like that... or DTAC. I have heard good and bad stuff with the network. Quote
Gaybutton Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 The most popular SIM card is One-Two-Call, available at any phone shop. The time cards are available at any phone shop or convenience store throughout all of Thailand. Most people seem to prefer One-Two-Call because it works well just about everywhere and is the most readily available. Quote

When was the last time you were in Thailand?! I believe the old Orange system was taken over by True Call. This is the sim card that I use and have no trouble whatsoever. However GB is 100% correct in saying that 1-2-Call is by far the most popular phone card service in Pattaya. (TR) The Rose Quote

It is more than a little outdated , it is over a year now. It was in fact bought by true call. They left all previous users ,as myself to keep the original Orange sim card with the new system. I was there last week, in Bangkok for Christmas holidays and just didn't think of it. I just show my Orange sim card to any of the 7/11 shops and they just give me the few 300 baths recharge cards that I need. That's easy. Now I was told many time that True Call, previously known as Orange, was more expensive than 1-2 Call , thus the main reason why few of my friends back in Pattaya chosen their services, to save few baths. Not sure if it is still true. Never really checked it. I like my number and I'd rather keep it, even if it is 0.05 cents more expensive than others. Quote
Guest buaseng Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I have had the same 1-2-call SIM for over a year (although I only use it for three or four weeks, twice a year). It is best to buy it at a recognised AIS shop. There is now one in the arrivals hall at Suvarnabhumi (which I can highly recommend) where you can buy the SIM and get them to set your phone up (for free other than the SIM cost) with their "Freedom Planet" option which gives you International Roaming, enabling you to use the SIM if required from outside Thailand. Calls in this case require an additional prefix dial code in front of the number for voice calls, although when sending an SMS to Thailand from e.g. UK the prefix is not required. Freedom Planet and International Roaming can be obtained later by calling their call centre but if you are a technically challenged like me it is easier to get the whole thing set up by them at the AIS shop in one go. Top-up cards can be bought at most 7/11 or family marts in denominations of 50, 100 and 300 Baht (I am told you can get 500 Baht top-ups but I have never found anywhere that sells them). I have heard some people complain that if you do not use the SIM for a time (30 days?) AIS suspend (and eventually cancel) the number but I have never had that happen to me (maybe having the Freedom Planet/International Roaming set up on the phone clears that problem ??). Quote
