"Poetic Expressions of Jean Cocteau 1889-1963" – VA, FV, MT

This exhibit features a suite of fifty-five (55) lyrical original drawings and lithographs by French poet, writer, artist, and film maker Jean Maurice Eugene Clement Cocteau. Curated by Tony Clark, Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Corresponding components to this exhibit include a screening of La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 7 p.m. and a staged reading of Dr. William Emboden's play "Cocteau and Colette at The Grand Vefour"Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 7 p.m. See individiual listings below for more details. Aloud and Proud- Chamber Music by Gay and Lesbian Composers - MT

The Pacific Serenades ensemble will showcase work by three gay composers as part of the City of West Hollywood's One City, One Pride arts and cultural festival. Composers are Mark Carlson, Miguell del Aguila, and Laura Karpman, with musicologist Byron Adams lecturing on what it is like working as a gay composer. Gay & Lesbian Center's Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center proudly presents the return of "America's Gaysian Sweetheart," Alec Mapa, in a special, encore presentation of his acclaimed solo show, Baby Daddy. The show hilariously chronicles Mapa's adventures as he marches into the unchartered territory of gay fatherhood.

A series of three evening performances/conversations on avant-garde queer literature will conclude with the June 13 Pride Month event. The name, ‘Q.E.D.’ references one of the earliest works written by Gertrude Stein — one of the first books she wrote but which remained unpublished until after her death due, in part, to its openly lesbian content. Q.E.D. (quod erat demonstrandum) is Latin for “which was to be demonstrated.”

On Staging LGBT Oral History: Laramie, Brokeback & "8" -- Gregory Hinton - CC

West Hollywood Library, Community Meeting Room, 2 p.m.

A recounting of how the oral histories of The Laramie Project, Beyond Brokeback and "8" were collected and the importance of staging them to preserve LGBT history, followed by an interactive workshop that invites the audience to recreate the emotional 2010 Missoula City Council hearing on a controversial anti-discrimination ordinance. Cocteau and Colette at the Grand Vefour- MT

A compelling, evocative dramatization of conversations between French poet, artist and filmaker Jean Cocteau and French author Colette whose stage career, colorful life and love affairs paralleled her sensual yet realistic works. Jason Jann as Cocteau and SKY as Colette provide insight into the lives, works and friendships of two remarkable figures of the 20th century. LGBT artists from Southern and Northern California present their work and strategies that bring greater visibility to the queer and Asian community. The panel will focus on art practice as activism and identity formation, building political and institutional alliances, creating community and developing personal and social responsibility. Panelists include: Tina Takemoto - performance artist, filmmaker and Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts; Arthur Dong - filmmaker and director of DeepFocus Productions; Mia Nakano - photographer and founder of the Visibility Project and Alison De La Cruz - multi-disciplinary artist.
