Guest EXPAT Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 President Barack Obama sits down with the ladies of "The View" on Tuesday's (May 15) pre-taped episode, and Barbara Walters and company have a few questions for the POTUS about fighting for a marriage equality bill now that he's said same-sex couples should be able to get married. "Well, keep in mind that on issues like social security, for example, a lot of this has to do with what's called the Defense of Marriage act, DOMA," Obama says. "The idea was we don't want that drifting into the federal government, and this is part of the reason why my justice department has said to the courts, we don't think the Defense of Marriage Act is constitutional." "You know part of it was also just knowing friends and family, people that I'd gotten to know who had these wonderful relationships, and they'd say to me, You know what? The words matter," he continues. "So even though you're a strong supporter of civil unions, somehow it still says we're different, and that particular set of conversations that I had is ultimately what led me to this conclusion." So he may know his way around DOMA, but one thing the president allegedly isn't familiar with is E.L. James' "50 Shades of Grey." "What's the controversial sex book that's on millions of women's bedside tables?" Joy Behar asks during a pop-culture trivia round with Obama. "I don't know that," he says. "I'll ask Michelle when I get home." "That is the answer," co-host Sherri Shepherd says. Obama's episode of "The View" airs May 15 at 11 a.m. on ABC on the East coast and at 10AM on ABC in the Los Angeles area. Quote
