BOT Predicts Cash Boom

Central Bank Sets Aside Bt300-bn Reserve as Election and Holidays Set to Spur Demand for Banknotes

Published on November 28, 2007

Money will flood into the economy next month thanks to the general election and the festive season, banking experts said yesterday.

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) estimates that household spending in December will jump by about 8 per cent as politicians pour money into their election campaigns and the Thai public spends more during the festive season.

Chittima Duriyaprapan, senior director of the BOT's Banknote Operation Depart-ment, said notes distributed to commercial banks in December are likely to total Bt192.5 billion, an 8-per-cent increase from the same period last year in response to rising demand.

The expansion of currency supply in December is also notably higher than in past months, with the Kingdom likely to report an economic growth rate of 4.3 to 4.8 per cent for the year.

Chittima said the escalating demand for money is a result of the many events that will be held next month, including the election, Christmas and New Year celebrations. Cash gifts at weddings, which are very popular in December, will also spur demand.

"In December, we are forecasting that people will require more money than normal. This would lead to a higher distribution of banknotes," Chittima said.

A source from the central bank said demand for Bt1,000 banknotes has risen, while demand for Bt100 banknotes has been declining. The source did not speculate on the reason for these trends.

Chittima said the central bank is preparing a reserve of Bt300.4-billion worth of banknotes to meet cash demand over the next two months.

In November, the total value of banknotes in circulation was Bt740.38 billion, rising by 4.84 per cent from the same period last year, according to the BOT. In October, Bt736.3 billion was in circulation, an increase of 6.41 per cent over October of 2006.

Aside from the surging distribution of banknotes in general, the central bank did not report any irregular patterns of distribution for particular denominations over the past few months.

The recent boost in currency circulation was partly caused by resurgent export activity, particularly in October when exporters stocked their inventories for the holiday season.

The spike in oil prices, the harvest season and hike in farm income, which has been spurred by the 23.3-per-cent rise in agricultural prices, also contributed to the increase of tender in circulation.

In October, the central bank reserved Bt263.5 million of Bt1,000 banknotes. However, the actual distribution to the banks totalled Bt106.4 million, accounting for about 40 per cent of the reserve.

For the Bt500 denomination, banknotes worth Bt28.1 million were distributed, accounting for 43.8 per cent of the Bt64.2-million reserve. For Bt100 banknotes, Bt139.9-million worth were reserved and Bt78.9 million, or 56.4 per cent, distributed.

About Bt9.7-million worth of Bt50 banknotes were reserved with a distribution of Bt5.7 million, accounting for 58.8 per cent. Thirty-one per cent of the Bt20-banknote reserve was distributed, or Bt78.7 million of Bt251.2 million.

My dearest. I have told you that reading Shakespeare can be dangerous.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

from Macbeth

A dark Cave. In the middle, a Caldron boiling. Thunder.

Enter the three Witches.

1 WITCH. Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd.

2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin'd.

3 WITCH. Harpier cries:—'tis time! 'tis time!

1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;

In the poison'd entrails throw.—

Toad, that under cold stone,

Days and nights has thirty-one;

Swelter'd venom sleeping got,

Boil thou first i' the charmed pot!

ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

2 WITCH. Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the caldron boil and bake;

Eye of newt, and toe of frog,

Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,

Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,—

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

3 WITCH. Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;

Witches' mummy; maw and gulf

Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark;

Root of hemlock digg'd i the dark;

Liver of blaspheming Jew;

Gall of goat, and slips of yew

Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse;

Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips;

Finger of birth-strangled babe

Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,—

Make the gruel thick and slab:

Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,

For the ingrediants of our caldron.

ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

2 WITCH. Cool it with a baboon's blood,

Then the charm is firm and good.

That's one of my favorite dishes. In Thailand I've probably eaten it.

The banking issue has to do with the exchange rates. If there is going to be another major cash flow coming into Thailand, that's likely to make the baht stronger, at least temporarily. That's precisely Thailand's dilemma. On the one hand, Thailand needs money and a major cash inflow helps provide it. On the other hand, the last thing Thailand wants is an even stronger baht and a major cash inflow helps cause it. Thailand's economy is caught between a rock and a hard place. Just what the outcome will be, in the end, is anybody's guess. I still think the baht will eventually crash. I just hope, if that is the baht's destiny, it happens before the US dollar crashes.

Confused? Well I was and that was before ear wigs travelogue.

The article seems to be saying hat thee will be more cash around in Thailand as people spend to celebrate the festive events of December. That this will be up 8% over last year may mean something but I'm not sure what.

The article does not draw any conclusions so why did they print it?

C'mon people. Who needs high inflation?

In the meantime, just wait for the american dollar to crash. The rest of the world will temporarily shudder but in the long run, Thailand will not be "westernised" as quick as some may think. Now this is a good prospect. I love Thailand.

In the mean time I would not worry to much about the dollar crashing, its the house price markets leveling out, to what they should be, if the prices had not been allowed to be so Inflated, the US would be a lot poorer today and this does not look good for the out going Mr. Bush, who is desperately trying to find a way to change the history books to make him seem some sort of a success as at this time, he is known as a failure, looks like an all out strike on Iran is cooling now, so he is looking for some other way out…..also with the Oil prices threatening to rise above 100 dollars a barrel a strike on Iran could be worse then IRAQ if Oil was to double and the most worrying is the Chinese changing from Dollars to Euros, as they will if Mr. Bush upsets them much more, so you see, so many things to think about, I wonder how much the Jewish lobby has to do with it, I think they run the World from Israel, via the ever powerful Jewish lobbyists , considering only 2% of the US population is Jewish and with the Banking, Diamond Markets, Entertainment and finance Houses all Jewish run, who do you think is really steering the ship. Its not a burning Bush.

An Interesting book I have just finished reading, blows some of the lid off this Jewish Mafia and I suspect this is what they dare to print the untold story is yet to rear its ugly head, to how much mischief is really going on behind closed lobbyists doors.

Read it for yourself your be amazed http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7104030.stm

Re quote from Rainmaker:- Re : "The Jewish tail wags the American dog..."

What an amazing likeness of you Mr. 'H' I cant make up my mind up, if your trying to axe that carbuncle of a Cat, from your wallet or trying to let your Buddy (__0__) get some hair to his head, if you will surround your self with sycophants, no wonder you have to always pick up the bills. but you must love it, any one who takes people out to drinks, then Publicizes how many drinks he bought says it all. :( lol

I don’t know about you saying your a Troll RW, but more like a hypercritic, I have no idea what picture I could put up for that, fancy trying to claim catawumpuscat is not insulting, arrogant and tells lies, to try to ruin people lives, on the forum, and you turning a blind eye to the fact he has some sort of a personality, to replace the boring others, you surround your self with, was you looking in the Mirror, when you made up all the trolling things you do....be very careful mixing with all those old witches, you may be given a potion, to make you laugh, have fun and get a personality or hopefully one of them, who has put a spell over you, as your constantly thinking he is not catty, I hope its not to late before you learn the truth, I heard they were all excited to hear you was coming RW to stay a while, so you can support there small state pensions. lol

It makes me laugh when the Laurence’s of this world, trying to, by put downs, claim others are boring, when its really them, that has no personality, I always wonder why snide remarks are made by people, who never tell us anything Interesting about Gay Thailand, only insults, now thats what I call boring, looking through all you have contributed, its next to nothing, other then very boring......what makes them think they are any better then any one else, nothing, only because they say so, but who are they trying to make there name off, some one with more of a personality and fun then they could ever be :)

I guess my days of learning new words are not over. I have heard the word sycophants before but could not for the live of me remember what it meant. So, I wikied it.

A sycophant (Gr. συκοφάντης) is a servile person who, acting in their own self interest, attempts to win favor by flattering one or more influential people, with an undertone that this is at the cost of their own personal pride, principles, and peer respect.

I don't see that may influential people in the expat crowd in Pattaya. I think most are pretty much the same. Men looking for a good time, sometimes in a sleazy place, but few if any I would consider influential. But, then again, I was never in the In Crowd.

Anyway, thanks for teaching me a new word today EarWig.

Dear Earwig,

No matter how much space you use on this forum to attempt to flatter me with flowery phrases, no matter how much you bootlick and fawn, no matter how much you play the toady, no matter how oleaginous your words in your droll and yet constantly cogent postings, the fact remains that you were not invited to the 2006 Gay Forums Meet and Greet, you were not invited to this year's event and you will not be invited to the 2008 celebration.

Too bad, so sad.

Kindest regards,

My goodness, who really gives a fuck if Ear Wig was or was not invited to the forum meet and greet other than a few silly queens in Pattaya who have nothing better to do than to talk about it since they have nothing better to do in life. I think that group is pretty limited and most have other things to do to occupy their minds. The meet and greet is a great idea and I am sure everyone enjoyed the celebration. But, jeeze, who the fuck cares if you excluded one guy you dislike for personal reasons and didn’t want to buy him a drink. I am sure there was at least one sociopath, one sycophant, and one or more true blue queens there that enjoyed your freebies. Let it rest. Your generosity was noted by many. You are a pillar of the gay community in Pattaya and have a good heart and a nice fat wallet if you were able to afford such a grand event. I wish I had been there to take part in your kindness.

I hope you take your quote to heart and move on from your feud with EarWig:

Amazed!!

It seems to me that GayThailand is defending a poster that has made an very discriminatory comment aimed at other members of this board. The Jewish Mafia comment was a deliberate attempt at back handing other posters and I strongly believe it was wrong to let that post remain unedited.

I live in Pattaya and had no idea about a feud until GayThailand posted that he was taking ear wigs side.

I enjoyed it when this board started because it was promised that it would be free of these types of posts. In now appears to me that GayThailand has changed these rules and I hope it gets changed back.

GayThailand has made it clear that he is wealthy and travels the world in seach of prostitutes. "Who gives a fuck". I don't care that he throws paties for former call boys and spends thousands on flowers. "Who gives a fuck". Now I admit that the this was rude to say. I think no poster should be treated this way. But why is a poster that posts such a discriminatory post being so defended by GayThailand. I am tired of hearing about a feud and having posters go at each other over something most of us (?) do not care about.

I think one of the reasons for the annual meet and greet is to allow us to expand our friendship and interests. At the last meet and greet I met several people that I found interesting and hope to keep contact with. I wonder why GayThailand does not sponsor one with the millions he must be making off this web site :):D

But seriously can't the moderators or administrator get this back on track and edit or delete posts intended to keep te feud going!

I wholeheartedly agree with you on many issues PattayaMale. Who gives a fuck over many posts? No one is going to read them all with great interest. Some are helpful and others are not. I have found many insightful. What I don't find insightful is the constant bickering back and forth between certain groups. I have asked it to stop more times that I have thrown parties. :) Still it continues.

I am glad you met several guys at the last meet and greet and had a joyous time. I really am. Have I ever said a negative word about that event? One? What I said was I don't give a fuck that EarWig is or is not invited as it was the subject of too many posts already. And, when I make my first million from this site, I'll throw a big party for ya. But, don't wait up late at night for the event as we are about 200 years away. I'm patient though. :)

Since this thread is so far removed from the original topic, Bank of Thailand predicts a "cash boom" and I don't think they were talking about me, Rainwalker or EarWig, I'll close this thread and let this bickering back with forth end.

Please feel free to discuss the meet and greet, the feud between the different groups, the cost of my parties among yourselves. :) Hint: Show up at Jomptien Beach tomorrow AM and I'm sure if you sit in the right place, you'll hear the latest gossip. ;) Just not on this board. ;)

PS. I don't think the Jewish groups run all the industries in USA. I think that the Jews have been very smart in business and have worked hard to get where they are. I don't think they have much power when it comes to politics. I do think they have a huge voice when it comes to the way the US deals with Israel. But, I don't think it goes much farther than that.

I think the ones the have run the government for the past 7 years are the Christian conservatives. I don't think they are finished by any means and have only begun to start to enact their policies. The make up of the Supreme Court has a great deal to do with the way this will play out in years to come. If you look at a typical American, they are stupid. How could they not be and reelect George Bush a 2nd term. But, that does not mean that there is no hope. There are those of us in the US that are not supportive of our government or its policies. Unfortunately, we are judged by a few. Similarly, the Jewish business owners are the same in that the ones that are very successful are thought to be the norm. In any business, if you work hard and put your money in good investments, you will grow. Jews have done this. Christians have done this Other groups have done this. If I see one group as more dominate in the policies of the way the US is governed it is the Christian right. But, that is just my opinion. And, with the next election we will see how far we have come as a country. Will we elect the first woman? The first black? The first Mormon?
