Members JKane Posted April 14, 2012 Members Posted April 14, 2012 HOW does SanFran not already have one? And how is conservative San Diego about to be the first??? Quote
Guest EXPAT Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 There is a Harvey Milk Street in SF. But it's a secondary street name. Quote
Guest FourAces Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Go San Diego Go my hometown Actually it is pretty sad that there is not a major street named for such an important man in San Francisco community. He had a strong impact prior to and while serving the city as an elected official. Im a little shocked such a activist town has not pushed harder for the recognition he deserves. Quote
Members JKane Posted April 15, 2012 Author Members Posted April 15, 2012 Exactly my thought! Nor Los Angeles or even WeHo... Though I also haven't come up with a major street in areas I frequent which needs a new name... Quote
Guest CharliePS Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 There isn't even one in Palm Springs. Quote
Guest FourAces Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 I wonder how difficult it is to get a street renamed. I know here in Texas it is like pulling teeth. I have watched on our local news and read in our papers the long drawn out fights over renaming a street. Hopefully its easier to get accomplished in California. Quote
Members JKane Posted April 16, 2012 Author Members Posted April 16, 2012 I drove past a Dale Evans BLVD today and it kinda pissed me off, in light of this. I've seen them in other cities as well! Quote
Members axiom2001 Posted April 16, 2012 Members Posted April 16, 2012 It costs money for this as well as a lot of politicking. In Seaside, CA which is part of the Monterey Peninsula {California}, a major street has two names Broadway Avenue its initial name, and beneath that is Obama Way which cost over $5000 and a lot of politicking to have it done. I was NOT for this to happen until President Obama left off after serving "two terms." Quote
Members JKane Posted May 9, 2012 Author Members Posted May 9, 2012 It's official! San Diego is First City in Nation to Name Street for Harvey Milk After Unanimous City Council Vote The San Diego City Council has voted unanimously to name a street after Harvey Milk, the Union Tribune reports: The two-block road leading up to the San Diego LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest will be changed from Blaine Avenue to Harvey Milk Street in honor of the late San Francisco supervisor, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. “This is a great day of pride for our community, our district and this city,” said Councilman Todd Gloria, who represents the Hillcrest area and is openly gay. Councilwoman Lorie Zapf joined the unanimous vote, despite past comments critical of homosexuality. She once called it a sin and that gays should not be allowed to hold public office. She has apologized for what she said during her 2010 campaign. The street signs will be changed by May 22, what would have been Milk's 82nd birthday.
