I also wish you a Great Trip especially after your recent health scare.

However my South American trips will be restricted to Colombia where the boys are far more to my taste, the Hotels and Apartments far superior and much less expensive and the travel time far less!!

it is now 7 weeks and one day until departure.. I can hardly wait..

For anyone who is curious, this is the apartment I have reserved. It is an efficiency/studio apartment, one block from the beach, and a couple of blocks from the subway...And the price is less than one third what the outdated Atlantico Copacabana is now asking...

I always figure, as long as the place I am staying at is clean, safe, and convenient, then the more I save on housing, the more I have to spend on other "things" such as boys...

it is just one block from Copacabana beach.. one metro stop from Ipanema.. it is near the Cantalago metro stop, which is one exit past Siguero Campos (where the Atlantico is located) and one stop before General Osisiris (the Ipanema and currently last stop). It is a 5 minute or less subway ride to Pointe 202, and approx 15 minute subway ride to 117, or 20 minutes or so to Meio Mundo.. For those of you who have stayed at Atlantico, it is just one metro stop further from downtown.

The agency came highly recommended by both Tomcal and Axiom, so I felt like I could trust this agency over some of the others.

I have used this agency 3 times and been really pleased. They have a U.S. Phone line and speak fluent English. I will be there when Lurker is there and I have a 2 bedroom(queen size beds) which is $100. U.S. LESS than the Atlantico's smallest room witha double bed. the link here takes you to the site, the first apartment shown "David's 302" is the one I am getting. It is directly across the street from the metro/subway station and 2 blocks from the gay beach in Ipanema...and within walking distance of Lurker's apt......gee I hope the boys he invites back to his place don't get lost and end up at mine!!! :-)

Gee, I was thinking just the opposite, Tomcal. I was HOPING that some of the boys you invited back to your place DO get lost and end up at my apartment instead.

Unfortunately the link takes you to a Cox Communications Login page.

Oops, just saw the rest of the posts.

Thanks. The other link asked me to sign in for Cox Mail.

The link does the same for me as well. I think it is cached on lurkers computer as its from a search.

the rent is $89 per day, plus a cleaning fee of $40 for the entire stay.. plus deposits, tax, etc.. for my 6 nite stay, it comes to just under $600 (plus refundable deposits)..compared to the current rate of over $300 for the outdated Atlantico

When I was in Rio, I checked the prices at the Atlantico. They ran $215 a night for what was called a luxury room. As I understand it, the hotel has been remodeled. Given how I hated the hotel I did choose, the Atlantico sounded good at the time.

i could be wrong, but my understanding is their "luxury" room is the old basic room with that unusable sitting area in the front of it. For the dates I am going to be there, the basic room was over $300 per nite.. OUCH>>

Just imagine the prices in Brazil for the Olympics ? Apartments can always be a lot better choice then Hotels . However some people prefer the convenience that a Hotel offers in its services etc.

For those people Hotel prices in Brazil have just become ridiculous. The few 5 star Hotels in Brazil really do not compare to many similar Hotels in other World Class cities and yet they are priced higher.

The Atlantico was a dump when I stayed there and I'm sure it is still a dump. Just amazing that anyone would pay the Atlantico $300 and higher . I think they have it rated as a 3 star . A 3 star in Bangkok would be $65 and a hell of a lot nicer. In Colombia about the same price. I stayed at a 5 star Hilton in London last week on free certificates but the actual price if I had to pay was only about $219.

Amazing to me that the price for the boys has not gone up a lot more then it has. Prague is cheaper then Brazil and the boys similar priced or maybe a little more but it isn't 40 minutes in a cabin and then on to the next customer. Boys in Colombia and all of SE Asia , even some cities in Europe ( Budapest, Berlin) are priced similar or less and all the other costs lower and quality much higher then Brazil..

I know there are many people here who love Brazil. I have been there 6 times and I love many things about the country. My type of boys seem harder to find although I have never been to PortoAllegre,so that does color my feelings.

But as you get older unless you have won the Lottery , value for your money is of prime importance and that means for all your expenses.

That is the reason Brazil does not get any of my money any longer and people need to remember there are many other cities in the world to explore and boys to meet

If the boys ever catch on and raise their prices substantially , many other cities with boys will become even cheaper then they are now in comparison to Brazil.

Bottom line there are a lot of other cities to visit and boys to meet.

I liked The Atlantico Hotel for its previous value and location and did NOT find the place too bad in terms of decor.

I always abhorred the lobby and registration area though.

Stayed at the Rio Copa Palace back in 2006 and loved the place; it was on par of a "W" Hotel.

Last October my friend and I rented a reasonably priced two bedroom apartment in Copacabana which was a block from the Avenida Atlantica [beach area]. We were only a mere block from the agency's offices which were located in an apartment block on the 12th or 13th floor. ...convenient and did NOT cost us an arm or a leg or both. We plan to rent apartments from now on and from the agency Lurker used. They were quite amiable and accommodating.

This can even apply to right here in the states. I know when I was doing a lot of travelling on the poker circut near the end I never stayed at the event hotel due to absurd cost. I was just as happy at the Courtyard or Holiday Inn Express down the street a few blocks.

For anyone who hasn't visited Rio.. here are a couple more examples of why Rio is so popular. I don't remember where this pic and video came from, I found them on my computer, but believe me that they are both very common sites in Rio..

the Leandro.wmv is a short video clip.. so be sure to click on it...
