How can Ohio issue a same-sex divorce if they don't recognize same-sex marriage?

There's some confusion in Ohio, where a judge has granted a same-sex couple a divorce. Ohio doesn't recognize same-sex marriage, so people find recognizing a divorce to be precedent setting, though others seem to think people are reading too much into it.

Why didn't get divorced in NY since they got married in NY where gay marriage is recognized? I am not sure what legal authority an Ohio state Judge has over on this issue?
