NBC has renewed midseason musical drama Smash for a second season. The initial second-season order is for 15 episodes, higher than the 13 episodes midseason show normally get in their first renewal. The move is not surprising given that fact that Smash was the highest-profile and most heavily promoted new NBC series this season, backed by an elaborate marketing campaign that some estimate cost as much as $25 million.

With NBC’s top entertainment show, The Voice, as a lead-in, Smash ranks as the network’s highest-rated drama in adults 18-49 (2.6 rating) and total viewers (7.7 million). After a strong start the night after the Super Bowl, Smash dropped in the ratings but leveled off relatively quickly, staying above the 2 18-49 rating level with the help of its big lead-in. Smash, which posted a 2.3 demo rating Monday, chronicles the birth of a Broadway musical. Stemming from an idea from executive producer Steven Spielberg, the series stars Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Anjelica Huston, Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee and Jack Davenport. Smash has been a passion project for NBC chief Bob Greenblatt and the first NBC series developed by him, something he did in his previous gig at Showtime. Smash, produced by Universal TV and DreamWorks TV, joins fellow freshman Grimm as the second NBC series to get an early pickup for next season. In addition to Spielberg, it is executive produced by creator Theresa Rebeck, David Marshall Grant, Craig Zadan & Neil Meron, Darryl Frank & Justin Falvey and Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman.

So we're coming down the home stretch for Season 1. Who do you think makes the best Marilyn ? Megan Hilty, Katerine McPhee or Uma Thurman ????

and what is the bartenders REAL motive ? Is he into Angelica Houston or just her suspected Fortune ???

What will become of sleazeball Ellis ???

does the composer hookup with the black backup chorusboy ?

I hear they are going to take the show in a very different direction in season 2 after all of the criticism of the current season so maybe Ellis will get his before we go to summer break. I really like the Angelica Houston character. So I hope they continue to develop that one. Katharine McPhee is the best one of course. . .

Smash will be casting for three new roles next season, including "Joe, a Brooklyn-born gent who is in his early to mid-20s and is 'gay, very cute, incredibly open and optimistic.'” Suggestions?

When Smash returns four um ... non fan favorites may not be around long, if at all.

Ellis, Dev, Michael and the husband of Debra Messing's character Frank will not be returning for season 2. No word if they will come back to rap up their characters or not.

"rap up"...? Are you suggesting a new musical direction?

No. I was talking about the four actors fired if they were going to come back to wrap up their story lines or not.

Jennifer Hudson, Jesse L. Martin, and Sean Hayes are all booked to appear on the next season of NBC'sSmash, but the show's newest choice of guest-star is a tad more eye-popping: Liza Minnelli will appear as herself and sing an original song by composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

I am sure they will find a way to work "Liza with a Z" into it somehow, and keep an eye open for a black or red sequin jacket and palazzo pants.... :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

NBC is moving "Smash" to Saturdays, which could mean curtains for the Broadway-based drama. The network announced Wednesday that the sophomore series, which has flatlined in the ratings on Tuesdays, will start airing Saturday nights at 9 p.m. ET beginning April 6, where it will finish out its second season. At this point, relegated to a weekend timeslot, it seems highly unlikely that the series will be renewed for a third year.
