I think because they won't censor stuff like kids being called faggots and all the other abusive language central to the point of the movie. The documentary, which chronicles the bullying epidemic in the American school system, has entered a maelstrom of controversy due to the Motion Picture Association of America's decision to give the film the R rating, which will make it difficult for people under 17 to see the film. The film's distributor, the Weinstein Co., has appealed with the MPAA to change the rating to the more audience-friendly PG-13. Jackson sides with TWC. Jackson's full statement reads, "Bully is a movie that depicts the nightmare that some kids face every day in schools across America. This harsh reality must not be edited especially considering how bullying has become a horrible form of violence. It drives individuals to suicide and even retaliation. Children are afraid to go to school and therefore their educational productivity decreases. Usually a death sentence for a movie, hopefully not this time! The Weinstein Company will release the film Bully unrated on March 30 after the MPAA refused to budge on its 'R' rating on the film, according to a press release received by Movieline: Furthering proof that the R rating for some language is inappropriate for a film that’s meant to educate and help parents, teachers, school officials and children with what’s become an epidemic in schools around the country, the fight against the rating continues on. The outpour of support by politicians, schools, parents, celebrities and activists for the film’s mission to be seen by those it was made for – children – has been overwhelming. Nearly half a million people have signed Michigan high school student and former bullying victim Katy Butler’s petition on Change.org to urge the MPAA to lower the rating. Said BULLY Director Lee Hirsch, “The small amount of language in the film that’s responsible for the R rating is there because it’s real. It’s what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days. All of our supporters see that, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received across the board. I know the kids will come, so it’s up to the theaters to let them in.” It will be up to movie theaters to decide whether or not to let minors see it. JK you're right about unrated films but that is more based on commercial movies. Bully, the documentary, needs to be shown in schools and being unrated might give educators the ability to do so now. It's not a matter of people not being able to seek it out, it's a matter of it being worked into curriculums and assemblies in the off chance it gives bullies, or maybe more likely, bystanders, reason to think and maybe act differently. From Towle: 'Bully' To Be Rated PG-13 After weeks of activist activity and very public debate, the MPAA has reportedly assigned a PG-13 rating to the Weinstein Company's socially responsible new flick, Bully. Via MarketWatch: The Weinstein Company (TWC), aided by the guidance and consultation from attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson, announced today that the MPAA has lowered the R rating, given for some language, for BULLY to a PG-13 in time for the film's April 13th expansion to 55 markets. The scene that has been at the forefront of the battle with the MPAA, the intense scene in the film that shows teen Alex Libby being bullied and harassed on a bus, has been left fully intact and unedited. BULLY director Lee Hirsch felt editing the scene was not an option, and subsequently refused to do so, since it is too important to the truth and integrity behind the film. Also a victory is the exception the MPAA made by allowing the film to be released with the new rating before 90 days, which is the length of time their policy states a film must wait to be in theaters after a rating change to avoid confusion or inconvenience for moviegoers. I have yet to see a screener, but it's apparent that this is a movie everyone should see, particularly those with children, nieces, nephews, cousins or any other person who lives in today's increasingly harsh world. The move comes after Change.org helped collect over 500,000 signatures urging the MPAA to make the flick available to as many people as possible.
