Guest luvthai Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Seems the Cubbing group has defaulted on several back rent payments and may be in trouble of closing down. Have also just heard they have fired the manager (Eric) and may be trying to regroup in time for high season. Quote
Guest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I hope this is just a rumor and not true. That group really did a great job at cleaning up that end of the Plaza. Plus, the food was great at the restaurant. I never got to see the hotel but I heard it was nice. No one goes into business there hoping to make a killing. I just don't see that happening. I would hope they knew they would do good to break even after their investment. I have thought of opening a Billards place there many times but I had friends that kept reminding me that it would never make money. It is still on my mind but not for an investment, more for fun. Guest pepperami Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 i liked the hotel very much when I stayed there in June, and will be very disappointed if i can't stay there again next year - i hope it all comes good for them Quote
Guest pete1969 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I would hope they knew they would do good to break even after their investment. I doubt their goal was just to break even. It always seemed odd to me that an upscale concept with upscale prices would open in a more downmarket area like Sunee Plaza (no offense meant). I never understood what market segmentation they expected to attract to that particular property. Plus, their marketing efforts were not good if they had any designs on either the gay market or the casual tourist market. Perhaps they concentrated mostly on the German market. I dunno. GT, it seems to me that a snooker club would have year round appeal to Thai workers. I'm not sure if one is already in that area or not. I know the snooker club in Paradise Complex in Phuket is always busy day and night mostly with the bar boys and freelancers. You might not make much, but you could turn a profit IMO. Pete Quote
Gaybutton Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 While it is true that Eric is no longer with the Clubber group, there is nothing to indicate that any of it is going to close down. All of this is very recent and there is more rumor around at the moment than fact. From what I have been able to decipher from those in a position to know, Eric is not with the Clubber group anymore and he intends to just relax for a few weeks while deciding what he wants to do next. The Clubber restaurant, the Jungle Boys bar, and the Don Plaza Hotel are all still open and running as usual. I am not hearing anything about any of those being in danger of closing down or any plans for any of them to close down. I have also heard there is a group of Swedish investors interested in the Don Plaza. At this point, however, that is strictly rumor and I have no supporting facts about it. From what I understand, those who have reserved rooms at the Don Plaza Hotel have nothing to worry about. It is not closing down. Regarding snooker, there are three I have seen in the immediate vicinity of Sunee Plaza and they seem to be doing just fine, although I wouldn't exactly expect to be able to eventually retire in the lap of luxury based on ownership of a snooker parlor.
