More Rain Flooding in Rio - American Consulate Alert

Just received this from the American consulate:

This message is to alert U.S. citizens to severe flooding in the northern and northeastern parts of the state of Rio de Janeiro. We recommend that U.S. citizens avoid travel to the affected area at this time. The cities of Campos dos Goytacazes, Laje do Muriaé, Santo Antônio de Pádua, Itaperuna, Italva, Cardoso Moreira and Miracema are the most affected. Local authorities report extensive damage to roads and other infrastructure due to floodwaters in this area, which is approximately 300 kilometers north of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Civil defense officials evacuated 4,000 residents of the town of Três Vendas after floodwaters burst a nearby dike.

Kind of crazy explanation for what happened. The flood waters are rushing down from the state of Minas Gerais into the state of Sao Paulo. There is a river there which then carries the waters east into the state of Rio de Janeiro, past the city of Rio into the affected areas where the banks/dikes are being breached. I asked him if these are poorly-constructed favelas. Which is what happened last year and the year before in Niteroi and Teresopolis. He said that wasn't the case.

Last night we had the most incredible storm here. Huge winds tons of rain. Two huge pieces of aluminum flashing flew off of the side of my house. The street in front of my house flooded. Branches of trees blown down. The dogs thrilled to be rolling in the large pools of mud. House soaked as we went for a bike ride just before the storm hit and we had left almost all of the windows open. Yech. Spent about an hour mopping up. Turned on the ceiling fans and we're almost dried out this morning. It's not quite 7AM with a bright sunrise so we'll be back to normal here soon. Not so nice in the Campos Dos Goytacazes unfortunately.

Brasil has had its rain during the past year as well as the beginning of our new one!

When my friend and I spent almost 2 weeks in Rio in October of 2011, we saw more overcast skies and rain since we both have been going to that city during its spring!!!
