2lz2p Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I was at BHP this morning for my quartely visit to my cardiologist. After taking blood, there is usually a 45 minute wait for the results before I see the Doctor. Since one must fast before the blood test, I usually spend the wait time at Au Bon Pain (coffee and pastry or cookie). While I was waiting, there were two Thai technicians hooking up two computer stations (desk top, LCD panel) with a sign that says "complementary." The technician I talked to said these two computer stations have wireless Internet connection. However, when he tried to set up the connection, he experienced some problems, which he blamed on the current "outage" of TOT Internet because of the cable that was damaged. I asked if I brought my wireless notebook, could I connect to the Internet - he said yes you could. While he was trying to set up the connection, I noted the one he selected was not shown as encrypted. The two computer stations are on the ground floor near the escalators. I didn't think to ask if the wireless connection availability could also be accessed from the hospital rooms. Will be great if it does - but, of course, there is the issue of security (a small notebook would fit in the room safe). Quote

Its off message, but I wonder if you might offer some advice about computers in Thailand. Would there be any problem with a laptop purchased in the UK, say an Apple, when I came to use it in Thailand? Or would it be better to buy one in Thailand for any reason? Though I think I've read here on this BB that they're very expensive in Thailand. Thanks, Asmerom Quote
Gaybutton Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Would there be any problem with a laptop purchased in the UK, say an Apple, when I came to use it in Thailand? Or would it be better to buy one in Thailand for any reason? I don't think they're more expensive in Thailand than anywhere else. I see prices ranging from 12,000 baht to 30,000 baht. If you already have a laptop, then that's the one I would use. If not, then I don't think it would make much difference where you buy it. If you buy it outside of Thailand, then make sure it's used before you enter Thailand. If you bring it in new in the box, you could end up paying an import duty of about 50% of the purchase price. I've heard that the best place to buy electronics of any kind is in Abu Dhabi. If you end up on a flight that stops there, that's where I'd go shopping. I suppose one advantage of buying it in Thailand would be the warranty. If you buy it outside of Thailand, and then something goes wrong, you will have a difficult, probably impossible time getting warranty service. On the other hand, the types of problems that are most likely to occur with a computer, such as the necessity for a new keyboard, a blown power supply, problem with the screen, or whatever, are usually inexpensive to have repaired in Thailand. As long as I brought up the subject of repair, I highly recommend a young Thai gentleman named Kilin (pronounced "killin'"). He speaks English quite well, will come to your home to repair computers, gets it fixed very quickly if he has to take the computer to his shop, and charges very reasonable prices. For example, only a few weeks ago the power supply on my desktop computer blew out. I called Kilin and he was over here within two hours. I told him over the phone that I believe the problem is the power supply. He brought one with him, had the computer repaired within fifteen minutes, and charged a total of 1200 baht for the power supply and the service call. If anyone wishes to contact Kilin for computer service, his number is: 081-295-3860 Quote

Well, thanks for that unexpectedly comprehensive and useful reply to my computer question. I will buy my Apple laptop here in London and make sure it gets well used before bringing it into Thailand as you wisely advise. As I've never had any problems with my previous computers I'll risk the warranty question, hope my luck holds out and rely on your recommended Thai expert, Kilin. Thanks once again, Asmerom Quote
Guest TOQ Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 When you purchase your computer in London I would ask the salesman if the warranty is international and can be covered by Apples Service Center in Bangkok. just a thought, john Quote
PattayaMale Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 About Pattaya Bangkok Hospital. I checked their checkup prices vs Bumrungrad in Bangkok. Why is the price for almost the same tests 20,000 baht more in Pattaya? I paid 13,000 yesterday for a comprhensive checkup at Bumrungrad after seeing the price for the same tests were about 40,000 at Bangkok Pattaya,,,,,and they have wi-fi throughout in Bumrungrad Quote
