World's biggest fireworks display in Pattaya!!! Oh Lordy, they best consider quickly finishing (or starting?) the water pipeline to the reservoirs as they may need the water to put out the fires downtown.....

I'd stand back a bit if I were you.

I went to the fireworks display. I was right at the Bali Hai pier. The show began at 7:15 PM and for about ten minutes it truly started off as one of the most spectacular fireworks displays I have ever seen.

Then something went wrong.

A set of fireworks went off, but instead of rising vertically as it was supposed to, it veered off horizontally, nearly hitting a boat (couldn't see whether people were on it) and then hit the water, causing a loud explosion. The crowd waited few moments. Nobody was sure whether that was part of the show or accidental. A police officer was standing next to me and was using his police radio. Then he turned to me and said, in English, "It hitting water. Show cancel now."

I suppose for safety reasons they decided to cancel the rest of the show. Everyone ended up leaving disappointed.

World Record Attempt successful despite problems with the launch of the Worlds largest firework.

Last week we reported on plans to hold a World Record Attempt at the Bali Hai Port over the weekend, where the Thai-Mikasa Company planned to launch the worlds largest firework which was due to be the grand finale of a spectacular fireworks display organized by the company. The event took place on Sunday Night and began well with the official opening by Khun Niran, the Mayor of Pattaya. Everyone prepared themselves for the fireworks and the world record breaking firework. The idea for the event was given to a Japanese TV station, NTV by 10 year old twins who attended the event. They submitted their wish to a Japanese TV Program called ITTE-Q! The firework was launched, however it failed to reach its planned height of 800 meters and only managed 130 meters before it fell to the ground and exploded. The explosion caused minor roof damage to the nearby Sea Rescue Center. The next day, a full de-briefing took place as organizers discussed what went wrong. However, there was some good news from Khun Somporn, the Managing Director of Ripleys: Believe it or Not! who confirmed the firework measuring 1.3 meters in diameter did launch and although it did not produce the desired effect, the World Record had been achieved.
