Jungle Boys

Early next week, possibly as soon as Monday evening, Pattaya's newest gay go-go bar, Jungle Boys, will open in Sunee Plaza. This evening the owner invited me for "the grand tour."

This is going to be a bar like nothing you've ever seen in Pattaya, or anywhere else in Thailand for that matter. It is a totally innovative concept. The bar is owned by the same people who own the Don Plaza Hotel and the Clubbing Clubbers restaurant.

You'll realize you're in for a whole new experience the moment you walk in the door. The bar has loads of private little cubicles, where you can watch the go-go boys and/or have a boy sit with you. There is no stage. The boys will be moving from position to position, some on tables in close proximity and some at more of a distance. There will even be "display" boys who won't be dancing at all, but will be readily available.

Every privacy area will have its own ceiling fan to enhance the air conditioning. The air conditioning will be plenty powerful. This won't be one of those bars at which you'll walk out the door sweating. The interior decor is beautiful. It reminded me of the Babylon Sauna in Bangkok. The seating will be quite comfortable and each privacy cubicle will have its own unique features.

They are paying special attention to the 'little things' too. I didn't think to ask whether smoking will be allowed inside, but I have a feeling there will be no smoking. We'll see. But the music will be subdued. The owner told me he's just as tired as many of us of the bars where you have to shout just to be heard at all. I was assured that every boy will be at least 18 years old. They are recruiting boys who have not worked in Pattaya before. They want a "fresh crop."

I wish I could describe it better for you. I don't know how. However, I think most people will be very pleased with this bar and will understand what I'm talking about when I say you've never seen anything like it in Thailand.

I'll try to be there the night they open and report more of what I see and experience. So far, I must say that I'm truly impressed.

How interesting. It is nice to see some innovation in the LOS bar scene.

However, I wonder how well a bar will fare without the typical stage, and more importantly, without a show. I also wonder how a bar without the social component will play out. If all the customers are tucked into private cubicles, I would gather it would feel more like an upscale brothel, with staff available for private perusal, and less like a typical bar.

I think this might be a love it or hate it type place. I tend to like to go to bars (even go-go bars) to have a fun time and to people watch and to be social. So, from the desciption of this bar, it doesn't sound like my cup of tea. However, the reality may be very different.

It will be fun to see if this concept works well. I'm sure there are many that will love it!

I believe it will be. When it comes to trying to describe things, I'm afraid I'm no Charles Dickens. I don't think my description does the place justice. Nevertheless, it is truly something different and I think it is at least worth a look. I agree with you. It may not be something that everyone is going to like, but as always it's best to try it and experience it for yourself rather than relying on the opinions of others.

I think only Wild West Boys stands out from the rest of the go-go bars in Thailand.

I remember several years ago Screw Boy in Bangkok had the cubicles. Back then they had a central stage with the wings going off the sides. The cubicles did not allow for good viewing of the stage and some where not all that spacious but it did afford some privacy when with a boy. I believe the new gogo in sunee is in the same place as the old Clubbin gogo was. I was in there and thought the deorations were extremely well done but unfortunately he had a problem handling and keeping his staff and he ended up closing it. Unless he gets a good manager that treats the staff right he may end up with the same problem as before. But i wish tme luck as we need another gogo in sunee.

This evening was the opening night for Jungle Boys and some friends and I have the distinction of being the first customers. That didn't last long. Within an hour the bar was packed. I arrived at 8:00 PM. The bar was getting crowded by 8:30. I stayed until 11:30 and when I left it was still packed.

It was easy to see that these boys really were new to the bar scene. At first they were a little awkward and unsure of what to do. That didn't last long either. As the bar started getting crowded, the boys became much more sure of themselves and by the time I left, they had shed all of their inhibitions and seemed to be really enjoying themselves. There was absolutely none of the usual totally bored attitude so common in many bars.

Most of the boys come from Khorat. Most are boy-next-door types and there will be more coming. All of them were very friendly and seemed to be having just as good a time as the customers. I know I certainly enjoyed it thoroughly. One of the things I most enjoyed about the bar was not only the friendliness, but the cozy, welcoming atmosphere. I didn't feel as if I was just another customer, sitting in the audience and only ogling the boys. I felt more as if I was somehow a part of it all and every customer's presence is significant.

The boys do not wear number badges. Instead they wear name badges. I like that idea. The numbers seem so impersonal, but the simple idea of having the boys wear name badges changed that and gave each boy an individual personality. Only a few boys dance at a time. The other boys "float" and 'kibbitz' with the customers, but are not pushy or aggressive in any way. There are no pushy mama-sans, thank goodness. If you call a boy over to sit with you, you will neither be pressured to buy the boy a drink nor pressured to take him "off."

The bar does allow smoking, but the owner told me that he is in the process of having a ventilation system installed that will quickly clear out any smoke. The boys are not allowed to smoke, even when sitting with customers. There is a staff room for them and if they want to smoke, that's where they have to go.

Beer and soft drinks are 100 baht. Hard drinks are 120 baht. I meant to ask the price of "off" fees and, of course, forgot all about it. Perhaps someone else can tell us that before I have a chance to go again.

I really enjoyed Jungle Boys. The owner has put quite an effort into it and I think the bar will be a great success. There are still more innovations to come, but the bar was as ready as he could have made it in time for the announced opening. He has really been working hard. Last night, he said, he got a grand total of three hours sleep.

I think this is a fabulous bar with a truly innovative concept. I think most people who give it a try are going to enjoy it as much as I did and will be repeat customers and will be there often.

Congratulations to the owners of Jungle Boys. You have truly introduced something new to the Pattaya bar scene and I think your efforts will be very well received.

and the volume of the music?

Not at all intrusive -- and that’s coming from a really old fart.

I wonder what "The next generation Go-go bar" meant. I read that customer tables are in kiosks - does this work well?

That's hard to say. It worked quite well for me, that's for sure. Most of the kiosks still offer a good view of the boys and some are more private, depending on what you are looking for. I think, as anything else, some people are going to like it and some won't. The best thought I can offer is for people to try the bar and decide for themselves whether they like the way it is done.

In Chiang Mai, the boys all have name tags as well. It is a nice touch IMO.

In the US, the female strip club industry in some states can be very high class, and in these bars, one-to-several girls will dance on the stage at one time while the others circulate on the floor among the customers (however, only sitting when invited by the cutomer). It sounds like Jungle Boys is using the same concept of a few dancers on stage while all the others circulate through the room. I've always wondered why this concept was not used in LOS instead of herding all the boys on stage at one time like merchandise.

Also, nice to see a bar not allwoing the boys to smoke on the floor.

When I make my first trip to Pattaya, this is one bar I must go to just to see a new concept in LOS.
