Guest lurkerspeaks Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I have always wondered, what is the origin of the mosiac sidewalks in Rio? How did they get started? Is it merely an interpretation of the beaches/waves? If anyone here knows, I bet IHPguy will.. Quote
Members ihpguy Posted November 18, 2011 Author Members Posted November 18, 2011 They originated in Lisbon. They are comprised of Pedras Portguesas or Portuguese Stones. From Lisbon and Portugal, the tradition traveled to the colonies. Macau, Brasil, Angola, etc. Funny that you ask, as I was told years ago the name for the Ipanema design. The boyfriend and I were having fun on 15th of November in Ipa on Tuesday. the national holiday celebrating the Declaration of the Republic. I asked him and a woman selling the Copacabana Wave t-shirts if either of them knew it. Nope. But he told me the individual rocks used to make the mosaics are called "Pedras Portuguesas" or "Portuguese Stones," composed of limestone and basalt. The female vendor knew it was the creation of Roberto Burle Marx, but not what he had given as the title for Ipa's design. Copa's of course is Ondas or Waves. Quote

Tomorrow is our three month anniversary, by the way. He brought me a dozen and a half peach Sonia roses with the good gypsophila last night to mark the occasion. Quote
Members lookin Posted November 19, 2011 Members Posted November 19, 2011 Keep away. Keep far away. Tomorrow is our three month anniversary, by the way. Congrats! (You notice I asked first? I do not fish off my neighbor's pier. ) You are indeed blessed. The roses are the topper, and hopefully not the only one in the relationship. Quote
Members axiom2001 Posted November 22, 2011 Members Posted November 22, 2011 Anyone else notice the hottie draped over the top? Is he anyone we know? Not only did I notice and admire the mosaic structure--I also noticed and thought about the cute man who is leaning on top of it. But since the poster placed it here, I put "three and three" together and concluded that "he is taken!" Quote
