Guest gcursor Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 You cant control what people do..you can only control the traffic you bring to a site. However if you want people to respond then you have to put up incendiary comments that is likely to cause a conflict..like how some of the gay gossip sites do to generate traffic. That includes (but is not limited to) character assassinations, starting false rumors, and many other things. So you have the "nice" way of generating comments or you have the "not so nice" way. Although I login and click the box that says "Keep me logged in for two weeks," when I leave the site and come back, I am apparently no longer logged in. So I often read posts as a "lurker," and only login only when I want to post something. Quote

Guest gcursor Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 There's a work-around to get past that. You have to pat your head and rub your tummy WHILE checking that box. Gcursor The "keep me logged in for two weeks" has never worked for me either. Quote
Members xenophile Posted October 8, 2011 Members Posted October 8, 2011 The "keep me logged in for two weeks" has never worked for me either. The authentication system is broken. People keep asking "why aren't there more folks contributing"? I believe that's precisely the reason. I too am logged out every time I visit the site, I'll see a comment I want to reply to, then I'll realize I have to log in again to add my 2 cents and I'll think, "I'll do it later", and off I go to the next site on my daily visit list. All the other forums remember me indefinitely, the cookies refresh themselves every time I visit. There's no reason not to. It's like a friend who asks you "what was your name again"? every time you get together, kind of gets to be not worth it. Sad thing is, it's probably a simple typo in the website's php code, these login systems are very standardized and straightforward. Quote
Members JKane Posted October 9, 2011 Members Posted October 9, 2011 I went into this in great detail when it first started happening to me, was under the impression it was just me so I gave up. Lame-ass work around is having Firefox remember my login and bookmarking the login page... http://www.maleescortreview.com/forum/index.php?app=core&module=global§ion=login&do=process but it would be far better if it farking worked properly! Members eeyore Posted October 9, 2011 Members Posted October 9, 2011 I just close my eyes and tap my heels together three times. And think to myself, there's no place like home. Works every time. Quote

TotallyOz Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 The forums are integrated with the login on the main site. Thus, the login on the main site controls the login on the forums. I have spoken to the programmers to work on this but they can't keep you logged into main site if you shut off your browser. I keep my Firefox open and I never have to log into the site to access the forums. But, when I restart Firefox, I do. When I go to the forums and am not logged in, I click log in at the top and it is less than 2 seconds and I am logged into the site and the forums. If you are on the forums and hit log in, it takes you to log in page and my name and passwords are saved and I click enter. I guess I have never understood why people have an issue with this. In any case, I am aware that many do not want to stay logged in to avoid clicking on log in each time and have asked the programmers to see if they can find a solution. Quote
Guest gcursor Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 personally i don't like staying logged in. im in computer security and it poses a potential security risk depending on how and where you are accessing the site. I know that there is encryption and everything but there is always a small chance/. the other reason I don't like being logged in is because everybody can see what postings i was recently looking at ...I know..I know..there are other ways to find that out too but at least Im not making it easy. anyway Im a very private individual about certain things and so I usually am overly cautious. ill tell you a short story. there was this lady counselor that I saw once and she calls me one day and asks me to come in to see her. So I go to her office and she says that her card has started having unauthorized charges on it and wanted to know what to do. I was like CANCEL IT! NOW! and report all the other ones as stolen as well. She was like, "Really?" and I said "Seriously? Do you know what people are doing with your information right now if they can make credit card purchases?" the internet is an amazing wonder but there are lots of dangers that lurk about....always remember that. gc Likewise. Does it work for anyone? Quote

These programmers don't sound like they they're very familiar with browser authentication code. I do this (SSO among other things) for a living. If you lose your session when your browser closes (which is what they're referring to), that's session persistence, there's a session "token" stored in memory which is lost when the browser app is shut down. For longer term login you need cookie persistence, so a login token is stored in a cookie which is set to expire in 2 weeks. Each time someone visits the site, the expiration time is extended, so in essence if they visit the site every two weeks or less, the cookie never expires and the login is retained indefinitely. Just add a "remember me" button which if unclicked doesn't give a 2-week cookie and the session expires when the browser is closed. Voila, both problems solved, and guys contribute more because your software "loves and remembers" them! Annoyance factor gone. Here's a link to send them on how to accomplish this in PHP Quote
