Guest catawampuscat Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I will be paying a new mobile in the next few days for a boy and I am not thrilled with 1,2 call, especially in the early evening from 5 or 6PM thru around 9PM as it is busy and hard to get thru.. I am leaning towards buying D-Tech but perhaps there are problems there too..Any info would be appreciated ... By the way, he will be using the mobile mostly out of Pattaya, if that makes a difference... B) Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Actually, it's DTAC, not D-tech. There are two ways to buy DTAC. One is a prepaid phone card, just like One-Two-Call. The other is to open an account. Only Thai citizens can open a DTAC account. In your case I advise sticking with either One-Two-Call or the DTAC prepaid card. If you open a DTAC account for him , then you will receive a monthly bill, and Lord only knows how much the boy will charge up. You won't have any control. At least with a prepaid card you can specify how much you will give him each month for phone cards and set a limitation. As for whether One-Two-Call or DTAC prepaid is better, as far as I can tell it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. I haven't observed any differences between the two at all. Both are available anywhere in Thailand provided the phone is in reach of a signal. Out in the boondocks, there are often problems because sometimes the signal doesn't reach that far. Quote
Guest freeyourmind Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 When I first moved here I purchased a Dtac SIM card and was unhappy with it because they didn’t have many sites/towers outside the main metro areas of Thailand which resulted in the “no signal” bar which was blank on the display screen. I switched to 1-2-call about six months after. I was happy with 1-2-call for 4 years up until about 6 months ago. Lately, as others have said, during the early evening hours I have problems making calls using 1-2-call. I had heard that Dtac has finally got their system (tower sites) up in most of the metro areas if not all the metro areas. I was further advised by some Thai friends that Dtac is as good if not better than 1-2-call as far as phone service is concerned. They, Dtac also have a promotion going on that charges 3 baht per call instead of 3 or 4 baht per minute. Granted, 1-2-call may have a similar promotion but I could never figure out how to program the phone/SIM card to change the way I was charged because the SMS’s that 1-2-call sends you are all in Thai !!!!! Long story short, I just switched back to Dtac about a week ago and the coverage is good, not as many problems in the evening as 1-2-call, but still an occasional “system busy” display at times. As someone said, six of one, half a dozen of another. Or maybe it is because I always like the underdogs. The good part is I have a new number and now only a few friends have the number instead of every cute boy I would meet. No more late night "I miss you sooooo much calls" There are also other companies that provide mobile service but I have no experience with them so I cannot comment. Cheers..... Quote
Guest stef Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 I got " Orange " which just became " True " not a long time ago, and it is working great. I dont think it is the cheapest out there. I have used them for 2 years now and barely lost a call. The Customer services is also great as they speak very good english. I would suggest foreigners to get with "True". Quote
Guest catawampuscat Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 I ended up taking the DTAC (sorry about the Dtech) and so far so good.. The only problem with this boy is that he speaks softly and even when I put another Thai on the phone to help, they ask him to speak louder.. I am planning to return to Thai language school in BKK and improve on my limited abilities to speak and understand.. It is a grind thou, and one must really be motivated to learn but you are never too old (well , don't start in your 90's) to learn.. If the moderators can change the title from D-Tech to DTAC , it would be appreciated... Quote
