First Trip to Thailand

My first trip to Thailand was a great experience for me. I have been reading the gaythailand.com and sawatdee forums for about 3 months before my trip. Both sites had useful information that helped me in making many decisions for my itinerary. The gaythaialnd.com site and the dreadedned.com site was the ones I used to find most of the hotels I stayed at and several of the activities I did.

I stayed in Bangkok to start the trip and was there for 5 nights. The flight from New York City was nonstop on Thai Airways and I booked Premium economy and it was fine. The trip was over 17 hours and it was very draining. I had little energy for a few days and staying in Bangkok the first few days was the best move I have made.

It was recommended to budget the hotel expenses to stay at the Malaysia Hotel and I did that. It was not to my liking and I only stayed 2 nights. I then moved to the Tartawan Hotel and it was perfect. It was convenient to the bars and to the shopping areas.

The bars I found the best were Dream Boys and Taiwan. Most of my offs came from these bars and I enjoyed the look of the men at those places. The best guy I picked up in Bangkok was from Taiwan. He was a perfect muscle guy with great definition and a nice smile. It was suggested 1500 baht for short times and that is what I paid.

While in Bangkok I went to the Royal Palace and the floating market. Both places were worth the time to see and I enjoyed them. I also enjoyed just walking around the area of the hotel and shopping and found some great places. I did not go to the gay massage places but found several on street massages that were cheap and mixed company.

In Chiang Mai, I stay at PJ’s place and it was a delight. The owners were very professional and accommodating. The bar and club scene there was not the same as Bangkok and I did not find the larger build that I had in Bangkok but still managed to find several I enjoyed. In the city, I went on the elephant trek in the mountains one day and that was a true joy. I took a bar guy with me and he had never been and he loved the experience as well. The weather in the city was perfect and the food places I found were very reasonable.

In Pattaya, I stayed at Mosaic apartments. I did not like the young children that were coming in and out of the building I was in and complained to management and they said they would look into it. After 3 days there, I knew the scene there was not something I was comfortable in and move over to the Ambiance. I requested a refund for the rest of my stay there but the management refused as I had booked a full week. Even though I check out early, they still charged me for other expenses. I would not recommend anyone who wants a nice place without all the grandfathers bringing back street kids into the room next door to stay with this hotel. The Ambiance was clean and the prices were reasonable. It was also in the area I enjoyed which was Boytown. I especially like BoysBoysBoys and Throb. I went to just about every bar in the area while in Pattaya and the only one I did not enjoy was Gayuaga.

I did venture over to Sunee Plaza and was just horrified at the age of the guys there. I spent only an hour there before heading back to my hotel. I find it difficult to understand how the moderators of this board can allow any positive postings about Sunee. It is a cess pool of underage boys and men looking to pick them up. For those that keep defending it I suggest you take a second look. Not one bar or one place in the area did not have young ones working or loitering. It is a shame for the management here to allow any posts promoting this area but even more a shame for any bar owner to try to condone owning a place that makes it money off the backs of children.

While in Pattaya I enjoyed going to the karaoke’s with the guys I picked up. I paid 1500 bath to them for a short time and told them I would take them out to the karaoke if they wanted. Two of them did and they invited their friends and we shared some whiskey. I enjoyed the singing and the atmosphere of the places. One of gay and the other was not. It did not matter to me as I was just trying to take in as much of the scene as I could in as short of a time as I could.

The best thing about my trip was the wonderful guys I met. I met some really handsome men that I hope to see again this winter. I did give my e-mail to a few but only one has written.

The worst thing about my trip was the taxi drivers in Bangkok. I often felt I was being ripped off as they wanted to go off the meter instead of pay for the price on the meter. Not speaking the language was hard for me and I was not able to understand much of what they said. I also hate the traffic in Bangkok. It was worst than any city I have visited.

The beach in Pattaya was very dirty and I could not imagine swimming there. Neither of my hotels had pools in Pattaya so I was left with no other choice but the beach. I did enjoy the vendors and the massage boys at the beach but hated the pressure for a massage or to buy a trinket.

I will stay at the Tartawan on my next trip and at PJ’s place. I am not sure where I will stay in Pattaya but am leaning toward staying at the Welcome Plaza. The rooms are cheap and they have a nice pool and are close to the mall area. The manager was nice enough to let me walk around and tour the place.

The highlight of my experiences was the elephant ride in the jungle. I highly recommend it to all.

Thank you to all that posted about the places and the bars, as I would not have known where to go or what to do. This site has a wealth of information hidden in the city guides but it is VERY outdated and needs to be checked for accuracy. Many of the websites that were listed do not exist and even many of the bars were not there. If you are going to have a site that has this information on it it should be accurate and up to date.

The Mosaik does not cater to those that take up younger boys or girls to their rooms. They do not have security to monitor who comes and goes but when you speak to management they normally take care of this. Most places in Pattaya that are apartments do not have good security. The higher end hotels do. If that is what you are looking for, stay at the Marriot. They are great and they also have wonderful security.

I stayed at the Mosaik for almost one year. I had a great experience there. The housekeepers were wonderful and the security guards were pleasant. The management has very little knowledge of how to deal with Farangs as only the owner can do this well. The manager of the place when I was there was quite incompetent and lacked any customer service skills whatsoever. However, if you spoke to the owner, he normally worked things out. I do not know the situation there now as I have not stayed there in 2 years. I am quite certain if you had brought this to the owner's attention as opposed to the Thai manager, your results would have been much different. The owner is generally a nice man. He just puts too much trust in his staff to run the place and they don't do a good job unless he is there watching everything. He is a busy man with many projects in Pattaya. However, when I was there, he was at the building every day. If this has changed, I would be leery to recommend it to anyone as he is really the one that held things together. But, that is true in most businesses. When the owner is away, the mice will play. No one runs a business like the owner and that is basically true in every country I have ever visited.

As far as Sunee Plaza is concerned, we do not promote it. We do allow anyone to post about the area and the bars there. Some bars do have younger than legal boys in them some do not. Memories and Corner Bar are just two that I have NEVER seen someone young in them. Don't judge the area on your one hour there. It is not fair to the other places and I am sure you were not able to visit every place in one hour.

As far as the out of date areas, you are right. I apologize and we will work on keeping the listings up to date better. Thanks for the heads up.

Ttiger, I am glad you had such a great time on your first trip to Thailand. I would suggest that you could have an even better time If you would check some of your judgemental nature at the airport. Thailand is truly the Land Of Smiles but you have to let it happen. The few days you spent in a few tourist areas of Thailand do not place you in a position to judge what others should or should not do.

In my opinion, the most surprising part of Ttiger's post is the problems he had in Bangkok with taxi drivers. It's been a long time since I've seen anyone mentioning that problem. Going off the meter has been completely illegal for quite some time and taxi drivers who do that can get themselves into a lot of trouble. The last time I had a taxi driver try to go off the meter was over ten years ago.

I don't go to Bangkok very often, and when I do I usually use the BTS or MRT to get where I'm trying to go. But I do end up in taxis a few times and they always turn on the meter immediately.

I realize it can be difficult for people who have no prior experience in Thailand and who don't speak the language at all. My recommendation to those who find themselves in a taxi with a driver who wants to go off the meter, whether you speak the language or not, is very simple. Tell him no and get out of the cab. Another one will be along very quickly.

Regarding Sunee Plaza, as GayThailand says, there are bars that employ under-age boys and there are bars that don't. As a moderator, most of the time when I talk about Sunee Plaza at all, I don't promote any specific bars. I'm usually talking about the idea expressed by some that mere presence in Sunee Plaza makes one a pedophile. Ttiger was in Sunee Plaza, but based on what he says in his post he is certainly no pedophile.

I agree with Pa's posting. If only one hour was spent in Sunee Plaza, then that's simply not enough time to pass judgment on the entire area and then try to tell us not to promote the area, even if we really were promoting the area.

Thailand is truly the Land Of Smiles but you have to let it happen. There is simply nothing judgmental about watching old men take young kids into their apartment. I do not call that judgmental but honesty. It is not only unacceptable behavior it is also against the law. I do not know where the line is drawn between the age of consent that is legal and the age a boy or girl can make adult decisions about their body. The guideline we use is the law. It is illegal to have sex with anyone under the age of 18. I do not call those that have sex with 16 or 17 year old pedophiles, I call them stupid. Younger than that, I do consider a pedophile. The boys that were brought back into the Mosaik were not even 15 years of age. They were only 13 or 14 and looked even younger. I call this taking advantage of the young and innocent. I am not judgmental because I do not condone something that is illegal. I find the behavior reprehensible and I hate to see this happen in front of my face and in front of security that turns a blind eye on the issue. Perhaps many businesses including the Mosaik and other apartment buildings make money from the old foreigners who take these boys but they still have a choice not to allow that in their buildings. As a consumer, I have a choice not to spend my money there. I made my decision not to allow this to go on where I place my head each night. My money can better be spent elsewhere.

Gaybutton: the taxi issue took place mostly late at night and around the area of Dream Boys. It also happened a few times when I was venturing out on my own into parts of the city were few foreigners were in attendance. I simply learned to get out of the taxi and go get another one.

Gaythailand: As the owner of this site, it is your responsibility not to allow posts that condone pedophilic behavior. Any posts about the Sunee Plaza area is tacit compliance with what goes on in that area. Say what you want about the area but I saw it with my own eyes and it is only a cess pool of old foreigner pedophiles looking for the youngest newest boy. Yes one hour was quite enough to judge for myself what was happening. Shame on anyone who financially supports this area and allows this business to continue. If you want to know why gays are so unaccepted around the world, go to Sunee any day and you will see why we are despised by so many. It is an abomination and makes all of us look evil and disgusting.

I did have a great trip to Thailand. The responses have been mostly about this one area. I find that interesting as my post was very positive in nature and I thought talked about how wonderful Thailand is!

So do I. I completely agree with that part of your post.

However, I have a couple of problems with your statement, "Gaythailand: As the owner of this site, it is your responsibility not to allow posts that condone pedophilic behavior. Any posts about the Sunee Plaza area is tacit compliance with what goes on in that area."

I agree that part of the responsibility of any web site is refusal to condone the behavior of pedophiles, but I do not agree that simply posting about Sunee Plaza is in any way condoning such activity, tacitly or otherwise. In my opinion, that is the equivalent of saying that anyone who is present in Sunee Plaza is a pedophile. I could see your point if the only "farang" in Sunee Plaza were pedophiles and the only businesses in Sunee Plaza are those that hire under-age boys, but that is simply not the case.

Is it your opinion that we ought to pretend that Sunee Plaza doesn't even exist and we should refuse to allow any posts about Sunee Plaza at all?

I don't dispute what you say you saw with your own eyes. I've seen it too. That doesn't negate the fact that there are also plenty of businesses in Sunee Plaza and vicinity that will not allow any kind of under-age activity and it doesn't negate the fact that the vast majority of "farang" present in Sunee Plaza are not pedophiles and want nothing to do with pedophile behavior. Many "farang" do indeed refuse to patronize venues that hire under-age boys, but they still go to Sunee Plaza and have a wonderful evening there in other venues.

A perfect example is the Topman bar. While some people are having a great time cutting down the looks of the boys who appear on their web site, one thing is certain: You won't find any under-age boys in Topman, and that bar is in Sunee Plaza. During your hour, were you in every venue in Sunee Plaza? Are you aware that a great many Thai boys who are 18 and older actually look much younger? Did you check any ID's to verify that your assumptions are correct?

My feeling is that if you want to criticize the businesses that employ under-age boys, that's fine, but it is wrong to say that posts about businesses that do not employ under-age boys is a wrong thing to do simply because they are located within the Sunee Plaza area.

Last week I rode several taxis in Bangkok, both in the tourist areas and out, and both with my Thai boyfriend and alone. Every taxi turned on the meter when the trip started, and charged by the meter.

I am not in the game being judgmental. To each his own. I think as long as there are 2 adults that are making consensual decisions about their body, it is their right to do this. This includes sexual activity, drugs, or suicide. In America, our rights have slowly been taken away from us. We are not allowed to control our own body or destiny. To me, this has been a shame and I don’t see it getting any better. I see our country as being more and more conservative as time passes. I do not think that the American mind can accurately judge that Thai way of life. It is not for us to say what they should or should not do. They were raised in a whole different world without the entire religious BS about sex and sin. I find this a relaxing treat as opposed to something shameful.

If your time in Thailand taught you anything it should be that the people there are amazing and wonderful and yes, they have a right to decide for themselves their destiny. The age of consent there is 15. If above this age, it is only illegal if the act is for money. If the person 16 or 17 is Thai and the other person is Farang it is assumed for money. As an American we are also bound to follow American law and thus the age of consent is 18.

I do not agree with set rules for the age of consent as I think it really does depend on the person and the time and place. You will find that people in Pattaya think different than anywhere else in the world. Partly this is because there is no place like Pattaya and it is the epitome of sin city. No place will ever become another Pattaya. I just don’t think it is possible. I have not been there in almost a year so I don’t know the comings and goings in Sunee Plaza. I have heard it has been cleaned up a great deal and I know when I was there last year it was much better than before.

I hope no one has the idea that every single person that visits the area is a pedophile. It simply is not so. They are there and there are many of them but I think more of them are lurking in the shadows of the malls and streets than in a much-publicized area. That is just my opinion though. I had a good friend once who was only into older chubby thugs. His interest was not in the younger guys. I think he did see a few of them over the years but they were few and far between. He went to Sunee every night to see his Farang friends. He was not there to pick up or even look. The young skinny things that many find sexy were just not his thing. His thing was to sit and have conversation with other farangs. That is hard to do in Boyztown but very easy in Sunee. I do wish another area of town would open up to compete with them but it has yet to happen. Pattaya is a lot of fun for those with a high sex drive and the ability to keep up with the constant changes.

Right now I am in Brazil and having a great time. There is no place like Sunee to meet and greet other Farangs. It is just not here. All the saunas here are where the money boys hang out and they are all over 18. They are very strict down here and I have NEVER seen anyone underage in any sauna. I suggest if you are into guys and not a rice queen, you take a trip down to Rio or Sao Paulo. It sounds like this may be more to your liking.

There you go. What you admitted doing (paying for sex) is not legal in Thailand.

I won't sit still for that. I see too many posts on too many web sites that try to make it appear that someone writing negative posts about pedophiles are actually pedophile wolves in sheep's clothing. I may not agree with everything Ttiger says, but he has written absolutely nothing to suggest there is anything sinister behind his intentions. I believe his true intentions are exactly what he says they are. What are your own intentions?

In a past life, I was a radio announcer at a station that focused on a young urban 'downtown" crowd, a group that was not unfamiliar with drug use and, as a service to them, I was able to get both law enforcement and the medical community to cooperate in analysing street drugs and releasing the results to me.

The report was then broadcast so that interested parties could use the information to make their own decisions. Each on-air report was prefaced, as best as I remember, with the following,...

"This station and its staff neither condemn nor condone the non-medical use of drugs..."

This fits with your Sunee/Mosiak experience this way: What goes on here doesn't require your approval or disapproval, your condemnation or your approbation. It just exists, independant of your moral indignation.

Thailand doesn't care what you think.

Your personal preferences as to the conduct of others are irrelevant.

The whole idea here is to let Thailand unfold around you because you are only a guest here and, frankly, with that holier than thou attitude, I hope you decide not to take any more boy prositutes on elephant treks.

Oh, sorry, I forgot.. You approve of having sex with prostitutes but only if you approve of their age.

I had my 80 year old mother here for 3 weeks recently and I took her to Sunee Plaza and explained the bar and street culture, and while she didn't jump up and down with joy at the underage kids who were working nor did she disapprove. She did get it, unlike you who missed by a mile.

She said "Everyone has to make a living."

Perhaps next time you can leave your gown, wimple and "I know best" attitude back home.

Later at night, when the bars start to close, taxis on Silom & Suriwong Rds charge what the drunken tourist market will bare . . . and that means turning off the meter and trying all manner of inflated flat rates.

This rarely happens in areas away from Silom/Suriwong, and in fact if you would have wandered just a few blocks away up to Rama 4 (and other roads) you would have easily picked up a meter taxi with little problem. Most knowledgeable Bangkok folks know & understand this scam is happening, and simply don't even bother to step up to a taxi on these two roads during later night hours.

Cheers ...

GB This time I completely disagree with you. Anyone who is this judgemental has a problem that is deeper then the surface talk. This person does not sound normal in the head. One hour and he knew everything about Sunee plaza---give me a break. People who see pedos everywhere they look and assume the worst about any adult with a child definetly should not be around children. I guarentee he would not come within a mile of my kids. Pedo or not this guy has a problem--a big one.

A couple of things.... It is great that you generally enjoyed yourself. My first time, as it were, was about a year ago and I also had an amazing time, but I too found it to be very eye opening. Particularly Pattaya and Sunee. And I agree that the place is fairly shocking to see first hand. However, as has been pointed out here there are plenty of venues there that are on the up and up.

Did you really pay Bt1500 for a short time? Is that the going rate now? I never paid more than Bt1000 for a short time and that seemed to satisfy everyone involved. And that was before the dollar started it's downward slide.

The only time I ever took any taxis I had my guides with me and they did the talking so I think that helped avoid any taxi hanky-panky. The driver who took me back to the hotel the night of the coup wanted an inflated price but was quickly put in his place. I tipped him anyway because I was happy that we found him under the circumstances.

The traffic in BKK is chaotic, but in an odd way I thought that was part of its charm. I suppose if I lived there and had to deal with it every day it would make me crazy, but in small doses it didn't bother me. And the nice thing about being in the Silom area is that the skytrain is right there and can get you around to many places you want to go.

Thank you Ttiger for your honest opinions of your first visit to Thailand as you found it. If the taxi drivers were the worst thing that you found, it was a good trip.

Taxis near Dream Boys Suriwong Road/ Patpong do hassle customers especially late at night. The same happens on Silom by Patpong and Sois 2 and 4. I am told that the Police charge them 50 baht to linger and they want a fare over the meter to compensate. Once you know your way around just walk along to Rama IV and there will be plenty of taxis available at meter rates - exit Dreamboys and turn left and you are on Rama IV. I think the same happens around other popular dens of iniquity like Soi Cowboy and Soi Nana.

When I first visited Bangkok in 1994 there were very few meter taxis and you had to negotiate but being new you had no idea of the correct fare. I was really pleased when a taxi driver gave me a special discount to go from the Asia Hotel to Patpong - 50% off - only 150 baht. Later on a meter it was about 55 baht.

I rather like Bangkok taxis. There are always lots of them around. The meter fare is really cheap. It is not usual to tip. Sometimes the drivers can be very amusing. One once talked a lot during a traffic jam. He was very angry because virgin girl gets 5000 baht for first f*** but man only gets 3000 baht. He did offer his virginity to me for 3000 baht though.

I have to agree with you, to a degree, on Sunnee Plaza. I rarely go there and when I do I always see obviously under-legal-age boys around - not every bar but obvious enough. I shocked myself once when well in my cups I went with a friend to a bar and it was very jolly and all the boys were dancing to Isaan music. Then we started playing guess which one is over 18 years old - shock there was only one! When I am touring new tourists around the gay scene I usually take them to Krazy Pub which has no underage and can be fun. I wonder if you found Crystal bar - Pattayaland Soi 2 - which is sometimes more impressive than Tawan bar for musclemen.

I don't think that condo blocks like Mosaic see themselves as responsible for what their residents get up to. Same same Yensabai and Center Condo. I have never seen any underage going in and out of Mosaic and have had friends stay there who are definitely not into that scene. Maybe you hit a bad patch and would be better off in hotels where they do monitor guests ages. We live, hopefully, we travel, we learn and our outlook broadens.

Thank you for that trip report. I always enjoy reading what first time visitors think of LOS.

You have stumbled into the biggest ongoing debate across the boards in your condemnation of Sunee Plaza. I've been all over LOS but never to Pattaya, so never to Sunee. However, in all the reports I've read, it seems there is much more going on there than just the selling of underage boys. So, even if it is not the place for you, it is hard to justify anyone making demands of board owners just because of your perceptions based on a one hour visit. I would hope you could understand why.

I am happy to see that you had so much fun in Chiang Mai. There is A LOT to do in the North of Thailand and much there that allows visitors to see and experience another part of Thailand that many don't get to see. I've also stayed at PJs, and IMO, it is the best gay accomodation in all of Thailand. I find the bars and go-gos in CM to be more low key than in other parts of LOS, and I do think the city needs better gay venues; however, the BF and I did pick up some really hot guys while in CM. The men there are beautiful.

I wonder why you didn't like the Malaysia Hotel. I found it very good for the price, but can understand why people would want to pay more to stay in a place a little more upscale. I always like Tartawan, but one has to book ahead as they always are full, and my last few stays in BKK were done without booking a hotel ahead. I love Dream Boys, but my visit to Tawan was not memorable. I think I went too late at night, as when I was there mostly all that was on stage were older and fatter guys, and I couldn't understand such high drink prices for such poor quality of guys in a somewhat run down bar. Maybe I will have to try it earlier next time.

Thanks again for the report.

:o Ttiger, you are just the latest person to have stirred up the vipers nest. You will have quickly realized from reading some of the replies here that anyone who dares to be negative about Sunee Plaza and the under-age activity that goes on there is immediately labeled as being a closet paedophile themselves. That is the stock defence from the active and closet paedophiles and their apologists who frequent the many gay boards centred on Thailand (and Pattaya in particular) to deflect scrutiny from their abhorrent activities.

Ignore them. You are quite right and have been astute enough to realise just exactly what goes on there even after such a short visit. Well done ! ;)

Very much agree, pete1969. Same same for me -- beautiful men there! My Thai Yi BF and I love going out and finding a hot guy to have fun with.

For me only another try for secret promotion of boystown and some special bars and hotels. My boyfriend is 27 and i dont have any intentions. Regarding mosaic - there live also farangs with family. I know one now 61 years old with son 14 years old. He told me from his problems with the hypocritical pedo-hunters. I really dont care about one opinion for a visit of 1 hour in sunee. Everybody knows there are many young boys like at every place and there are some bars with underage boys. Dont need to mention every 5 seconds. Slowly it is boring to read always the same and only to show what everybody knows. And yes i stayed in sunee and will stay there again and again because of the good prices and the enough legal possibilities for fun.

My first trip to Thailand was a great experience for me. I have been reading the gaythailand.com and sawatdee forums for about 3 months before my trip.

Hi Ttiger,

I am glad you had a great experience in Thailand.

Thanks for sharing all of this with us.

PS : I wish more members would share such experiences on this board.

My boyfriend is 27 and i dont have any intentions.

I'm glad to know that. Meanwhile, you said nothing as to why you think it's appropriate to post a not-so-subtle implication that Ttiger is probably a pedophile who is pretending not to be. According to my interpretation of what you're saying, anyone who writes a post critical of pedophiles is probably a pedophile himself. I hope I'm wrong about my interpretation.

Most of us who are experienced in Pattaya know that the majority of people who enjoy Sunee Plaza are not pedophiles at all. I think Ttiger is wrong to say that Sunee Plaza is essentially nothing more than a haven for pedophiles based on a grand total of one hour there, but to suggest that he is probably a pedophile himself because of his post is absurd. Do you disagree?

Yes you are wrong with your interpretation.

Please look my text - it means only the secret promotion for boystown and it is never meaning that what you wrote. I never would suggest that without proofs. Intention means to make only one part of gay-pattaya bad (after one hour) and promote the other. I wrote this only because always new members on any gay-thailandboard write the similar things and after they disappear. I was myself shocked in february when i took a look in KBoys together with a friend from germany and we have gone away. But i never over-estimate such things. I know thailand for over 20 years and have seen many shadows. Ok again it was no implication he(tiger) is pedo - but tiger can go again to mosaic-appartments and tell the father of my friends family ,when his son comes home, that he is pedo.

Good. You could have phrased your original post better, but I'll take your word for it.

The guy was not your friend unless your friend is 70 years old and has 2-3 different sons every day. It was an obvious date and not a father son relationship. The boys never stayed more than an hour or two and usually in the late afternoon and early evening.

Perhaps I have been too harsh on Sunee but that is my impression and it remains so. My feelings have not changed.

I did not try to promote Boystown over the other area. I like it better and they have more guys my taste over there. I said I would stay at Welcome Plaza next time and that is not in Boystown.

I have no agenda other than to speak my mind. Like it or not, it is my opinion and that is the end of me defending it.
