Guest Conway Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I am planning a return trip to Brazil next winter and I am interested in staying in Leblon or Ipanema. In the past, I have always stayed in Copacabana and have been happy enough with the Atlantico. I'm cheap. I hate paying more than $150 a night for a hotel...even in Rio. I also would like a place that has a somewhat liberal visitation policy in case I meet a nice sauna boy or beach boy that I would like to spend some quality time with. I don't need to be on the beach. Walking distance is for me. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Quote
Members axiom2001 Posted June 1, 2011 Members Posted June 1, 2011 Read the most recent threads here about prices in Rio de janeiro. Also, read at www.gaytravelbrazil.com. I think we future travelers will not be able to find any really cheap lodging venues in this city anymore, especially one's that are decent and have a liberal visitor's policy which we all have found that The Atlantico Copa Hotel has been the one over these 10 years of our/my traveling there. My good friend and I plan to be in Rio in October, but this time we're opting to rent an apartment for ten days and share the cost! Even in our doing this, it "aint" cheap! Quote

Short walk to beach and near many restaurants and shops. Great location. Quote
Members Thumper1 Posted June 1, 2011 Members Posted June 1, 2011 I liked it too, BUT you can't bring back overnight guests :-( Stayed at the Ipanema Plaza last time I was there. Short walk to beach and near many restaurants and shops. Great location. Quote

Guest tomcal Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 To my knowledge, there are no hotels in Ipanema, that allow guests, unless they are registered as one of the occupants. Over the years my friends and I have checked out quite of few of them to see if they do, as I like staying in posto 9 area near the Farme de Amoedo/gay area, but never had sucess in finding any. I am going back down in a couple weeks and for the first time in 10 years I am not staying at the atlantico hotel in spite of it's "liberal" visitor policy. When the Atlantico was $70./nt it was worth it as it was/is a average hotel.. but now that it is going for $160/nt for the small rooms it's just not worth it. We went on VRBO and found a really nice upgraded 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment in great location, owned by a gay man who is ok with bringing visitors back! and it runs $110./nt each for two people. Thanks for the VRBO suggestion, Tomcal. I just made an inquiry on a really nice looking and well reviewed 1 bedroom near posto 8. Given the weak dollar, this will probably be my last trip to Brazil for a while. Quote
Guest tomcal Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Thanks for the VRBO suggestion, Tomcal. I just made an inquiry on a really nice looking and well reviewed 1 bedroom near posto 8. Conway, be sure and check to see they allow guests, the first apt we put deposit down on, 3 weeks after the reservation was made, they wrote and said "oh by the way we don't allow guests!" this was a 3 bdrm unit and there were two of us renting. I said "we are planning on having a couple of dinner parties and will be happy to leave a damage deposit if your are worried". they said no. The rental I did get was made easier as the owner lives in Palm Springs and we were able to talk on the phone and all the rules or lack thereof were established. He faxed over a rental agreement form. The only difference that renting a apt vs. a hotel might make for some renters is some like the person I am dealing with only take a cashiers check or MO no credit cards. They employ a local management company who meet you and give you the keys and are there to take care of any problem tht might come up(elect/plumbing/internet/etc.) To point out the difference between hotel vs. condo, The smaller rooms at the Atlantico are, I would guess around 300 sq ft. for $160/nt. the condo is 1800 sq ft, 2 bedrooms/2-1/2 baths with kitchen and laundry for $110/nt.
